Interesting idea. I don't know if it's possible for the folks at WolfCopy to interface existing copiers and card readers with the systems that we maintain for print quota, but it's not a bad idea. Next time I get to talk with folks from their office, I'll inquire.

yea, i talked ncstatelib on aim a couple days ago and asked them what the deal was and they said that you can only do the card thing with computers maintained by ncsu ITT or somethin.

it would be a lot more convenient for me to just use the wolfcopy cards instead of paying for the quota online.

printing using cards, as i understand it, is something that's being done only in discrete areas of campus, where individual departments or organizations chose not to use the debited printing system maintained by OIT (formerly ITD). i don't know any of the reasoning behind their decisions, since i was not involved.

as far as putting that sort of thing in labs, i think we'd want to retain flexibility for students that want to buy online versus going to add money to a wolfcopy card. since wolfcopy card stations aren't available universally, there'd have to be a lot of coordinated effort to make something like that available. wolfcopy works on a cost-recovery basis, and their primary focus is on the printing hardware, and consumables. OIT maintains the software and back-end systems to keep printing running.

if this were to happen, it'd probably take a long time to implement, since it would likely disrupt a lot of the way we manage printing. incremental improvement often has to be the way we handle lab-related things.

print quota is much easier, imo. i keep a wolfcopy card just for making copies and stuff, but if you're in a unity lab like fyc or an engineering building it would suck to have to go to dh hill just to get a card or add money. it'd probably be nice to have the option of both, but that'd be a lot of effort and reworking of the system for just a few people who would use the service.
