Cousins opens it up

The recruitment of elite big man DeMarcus Cousins has taken another turn. Coach Mike Davis still has a good chance of coaching Cousins, but it is looking less likely that he will coach him at UAB.

After failing to come to get a guarantee from the UAB administration that he would be released from a Letter of Intent if Mike Davis were to leave the school, Cousins has now officially opened up his recruitment.

“He’s just opened it up incase things don’t go well for Mike (Davis),” said Otis Hughley, Cousins coach at Mobile (Ala.) Leflore High School. “If things work out for Mike at UAB, that’s probably what he would do. But he doesn’t want to close the door on his foot.

“DeMarcus’ ideal world is to be with Mike if he leaves UAB.”

Along with Cousins’ attachment to Davis, his checkered history in Birmingham is also a factor in his opening up his recruitment.

“DeMarcus’ mom doesn’t know if Birmingham is the best place for him,” said Hughley. “There is a stigma from his past there. It’s a city where he had some difficulties when he was young, and his mom isn’t sure if it is best for him to be there, especially if he didn’t have the guidance of Mike there.”

Schools aren’t wasting any time jumping back into Cousin’s recruitment. John Calipari has already made his way down to Mobile for a visit, and Hughley has fielded calls from North Carolina State, Missouri, Indiana, Washington and Louisville. Hughley also noted that UCLA is expected to pursue Cousins as well.

But before anyone can get to Cousins, they have to go through Mike Davis.

“I’m telling everyone whose calling to call Mike Davis first,” said Hughley. “If Mike says no, then I don’t mess with them.”

Cousins, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound power forward, is the No. 2 ranked prospect in the Rivals150.




Weird that coaches have to get Mike Davis' approval before talking to Cousins and his high school coach.

^That's impressive. At least we know we have Leslie (in theory). He looks even better in that video than in the videos from last year. And yes, Wall is sick.

^^^^The video is basically a john wall clinic although the baseline 360 one-handed jam by Leslie was the highlight of the whole vid.

We better not let Lowe go after the class he has coming in next year. I like Lowe and realize what he wants to do here in the future and am willing to give him adequate time to get it done. Herb got plenty of time and we should give Lowe enough time too.

I did forget to mention that it looks like the Rose youtube videos were faster than real time speed....so that may be why rose looked better. They both make sick plays.

Why must everyone talk about Herb when judging Lowe?

He brought a great recruiting class in last year that just made the team worse.

If he cannot in-game coach and get the team to play together it doesn't matter how long he is here.

And regarding Lowe's in-game coaching ability, wasn't everyone sucking him off for how great of an in game coach he was when Atsur was running the show? About how he always seemed to call timeouts at the right time, draw up a great play when we needed it most, effectively teach a team how to execute an inbounds pass (and mind you, they sucked at it under Herb and you will not argue that), motivate the team for the big games against the big boys down the road?

Thats right, everyone was saying those things. Everyone. The media, our fans, our lunatics. Now after one year where our pre-season projections were too high and our personell got injured and a few played like jealous bitches, he can't coach?

Say what??

I was kinda disappointed with that year (5-11 in that ACC), with the exception of our little run in the ACC tournament. I think a lot of our fans had short memories because of that ACC tourney run, the win over UNC, and the wins in the NIT. If anything, it at least made me say to myself, "well, Sidney might be able to coach." And that was put in jeopardy rather quickly last year.

there's like a sentence worth of news every two weeks in recruiting right now. like i have said many times, this thread will get back on track when there's recruiting to talk about. no need to be like packpride where everyone just says how pleased they are w/ everything over and over.

I have disapproved of Lowe's coaching since Day 1.....look at my posts. I was never sucking him off for a fucking 5-11 ACC season and miracle tourney run.

I think barring Sid getting canned he'll be here. Leslie is here all the time and is doing a good job recruiting for us. I use to doubt if Leslie would end up here but he seems to love the program so I think he'll be here.

Ok. What has he done to show that he is a good in-game coach? His substitutions are mind-boggling, he makes little adjustments that work, our teams don't box out, and we don't play together.

I am just stating my opinion. He has not shown me anything when it comes to coaching. Look at the Davidson game. One of people's main gripes with Herb was lack of rebounding and we are even worse under Sidney.

That being that you're a Herb homer, and as such, it didn't matter what Lowe did because you were set against him from the start, as you yourself have just pointed out. How is blindly disapproving of a coach any better than blindly approving of him?

Whats with the crybabies bitching about a dead thread getting off topic? If something interesting happens in NC State bball recruiting I'll gladly shut up, but it seems that some people would rather see our coach fail, so they need to be put in their place.

I see your points boozie about the rebounding and similar mistakes being made under Lowe that were made under Sendek...but the one constant has been the players.

I said it the day we hired Lowe, and I'll say it again. I'll judge him when he's playing with a roster full of HIS recruits. The only 3 question marks here are Gonzales (who was recruited IN CASE we had an injury, which we did) and the 2 from this year...but its too early to tell. Lowe said when he signed them that they are solid players and hard workers, and he has hinted numerous times that he recruited them early in order to focus on the 07 and 09 classes...with 09 being his first class where he started on an even playing field with every other coaching staff in the country (as far as getting in the game while they're freshmen/sophmores). He's done a damn good job so far and it sounds like he has a better jump on the '10 players.


He's still running a hybrid offense with key players who were recruited for a different system. Like I say, looking at some of the good he's done, and the players he's bringing in, I'll take my chances with him for another 2-3 years. If we're still having this conversation after the 2010 season, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.
