Just as a quick question, what are our odds of resigning any of the players who left in the offseason? Are they the same as the chance we would have had if they were in Carolina already, so it didn't matter one way or the other, or are the diminished significantly now that they are with their new team?
Were these guys with expiring contracts probably going to leave anyway?
I know why we're doing this, but I was just wondering if we are going to have to totally rebuild through the draft, or if this could end up being a big upgrade because we'll get several of these guys back and have a solid draft as well. 2/14/2010 1:54:41 AM |

that's a pretty hard question to answer
but i'd say that our odds are probably around the same, and that we aren't really rebuilding, we're just fixing some mistakes in how our team was made up. honestly, with the core we have right now, add a few FAs (DEFENSE, ANYONE?) with a little more success than we did last offseason, we should be in contention for a playoff spot.
we just fucked up this year not getting younger, and apparently we REALLY fucked up by not giving Staal the C at the beginning of the season.
none of these kids we draft this year (unless we get Hall or Seguin) will be on the team next year.
i'd say we have a 50/50 shot of resigning Cullen to a reasonable contract, and if Whitney doesn't get an extension after he's traded he'd probably get a 1-2 year deal too. Highly likely we resign at least one of them.

It was talked about the other day in this thread, but here is some possible new news regarding the Canes farm system. It seems that the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL are moving to Greenville, SC next season. Also, they currently don't have an NHL affiliate. Now obviously it's all speculation on my part, but this looks like an obvious solution to who the Hurricanes will use as an ECHL affiliate.

I don't think they will be changing. Karmanos is part owner of both the Everblades and their arena, and until that changes I think they stay our affiliate. 2/15/2010 10:41:25 PM |

In parking lot related news, I finally am putting the finishing touches on the cornhole set we have been trying to complete for the last few months.
Now I am just anxious for good weather. I think there are 3 or 4 March weekend home games to break these things in at. CORNHOLE TOURNAMENT ANYONE?! 2/18/2010 9:19:26 AM |

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
one suggestion....you need to put red battery operated lights in the underside of the hole. http://www.techno-solutions.co.uk/zen/images/products/rope-light---12v-red.gif
that way when it gets darker, your hole will glow cane's red and you can still see the target! its cheap, and it looks sooooooo awesome when finished. easy to install. just clip them on the inside in a circle!

Took about a month for completion, but building them actually only took a day. My folks had some scrap wood and my hole saw came in the mail so we knocked it out pretty quickly. It took forever to paint bc I don't have a shop, and the damn temps never got above 35 degrees for like a month, so the paint wouldnt behave.
I have a vinyl cutter that lets me cut the logos, but I'll tell you... that primary logo on the red board was a pain because you have to do each color separately, in layers... messed up at least twice doing that. It was fun making them, but I am glad they are done2/23/2010 6:26:53 PM |

oh hey, i've been out of the county. how are the hurricanes doing this year. i have not had access to a newspaper, the internets, or any sort of TV. are they going to make the playoffs? have they traded any popular players? has the captaincy been given away? are they in the last 3 of points in the NHL? is there a chance that GM rutherford might call up a bunch of minor leaguers and give up the season?
once again, been out of the county. these are the questions that I have. also, are the devils in playoff contention?
bye for now. 2/27/2010 1:01:34 AM |

Yes, the Hurricanes are one of the worst teams in the league, and are playing a bunch of minor leaguers.
And they still chased Marty Brodeur's fat ass from the RBC Center ice for the millionth time. 2/27/2010 1:06:15 AM |

Corvo - 2nd and a low/mid level prospect A. Ward - 5th, anything more than that would be robbery. Alberts - 4th, maybe a low level prospect

Why the fuck is Florida bidding? They just had it like 8 years ago. Fucking dickheads, you can throw that one out as a potential site.
Philly hasn't had it in nearly 20 years, but I can't imagine they're at the top of the league's list.
Ottawa has never had it, but their arena is out in BFE further than the RBC Center ever dreamed of being. I'd say they are also very unlikely to get it, there isn't anything of note around their arena. The actual city of Ottawa is 20 minutes away in good traffic conditions.
Pittsburgh is likely to get it. They haven't had it since 90 and with the new arena and their recent rise to prominence, I doubt the NHL tells them no. If they don't get it this year, they're getting in the next one.
We've got a real shot here, but I think we're 2nd after Pittsburgh in the NHL's eyes. We might get one in another few years, but I'm doubting it will be this year.3/1/2010 3:22:24 PM |
