You know Drew Brees wants that passing yardage record over Brady. I how we shut his ass down and knock then down to the #3 seed. 12/28/2011 10:14:21 PM |

Looks like if we lose Sunday, we pick no worse than 9th. Buffalo plays NE, so they'll lose and they're SOS will go up. KC plays Denver, so they could win or lose, but they're SOS will probably still be better than ours. If we win, we could pick down into the teens, but fuck it, we already have a quarterback, so I'm rooting for a Superdome beatdown.

I usually can't stand Bomani Jones' "whoever yells the loudest wins the argument" style, but I can kinda see where Bomani is coming from with his point about racism regarding black QBs. I mean, I've almost never heard a black QB compared to a white QB; they're always compared to other black quarterbacks.
That's not exactly breaking news, though, people much smarter than Bomani have been pointing that out for quite a while. Plus, Andrew Luck's style of play is nothing like Cam Newton's. 12/29/2011 5:18:13 PM |

Cam is much more like Luck than RGIII and that was the comparison.
Bomani is right, just seems to be an old story that shouldn't still be true. Guess it is. 12/29/2011 6:02:01 PM |

^Agreed. I still don't think Luck's game is anything like Cam's, but RGIII's game is even less like Cam's. 12/29/2011 6:31:05 PM |

yea there's no 1 to 1 comp for Cam. Luck doesn't have anywhere near his arm strength - his running ability might actually be closer if he used it more. I do think he could be a badass TE or LB if he wanted though, same as Cam 12/29/2011 6:42:19 PM |

Cam was smart to dance around the racism accusations. His play has done the talking, no point in opening himself up by being baited into playing the race card. 12/29/2011 7:48:17 PM |

Cam compares to a slightly faster Big Ben? I'm stretching but that might be the closest I can think of. Vince Young with accuracy. Oh, and not batshit crazy. 12/29/2011 8:41:47 PM |

slightly faster? let me know when big ben comes anywhere close to outrunning an entire nfl defense right up the gut 12/29/2011 8:55:50 PM |

Cam has great speed for his size, but he's not a burner like Vick. He's a 4.6 guy -- the same speed as most OLBs in the NFL.
I don't think there's another player like him, but I think his style is closest to Big Ben. They have the similar size, arm strength, pocket presence, escape ability, and accuracy. They can also make big things happen when they break outside the pocket. Cam obviously has the edge when it comes to running, but the two definitely have similar styles. 12/29/2011 9:16:24 PM |

Or maybe the love child of Vick and rothlesburger

ben cant actually run. he can bumble around in the backfield forever because he's a fatass but he's not taking off for 50 yards
he's more like a robot upgrade version of culpepper but even that is a bad comp

he's a quicker/more elusive Rothelisberger12/29/2011 9:36:20 PM |

Much like the posters above, I usually compare his play- and field-stretching abilities to those of Roethlisberger and Culpepper. He has a similar build and strength in his core, where he can escape from pressure and shrug off would-be tacklers while keeping his eyes downfield. His deep-ball accuracy is up there with the best of them, and he has no fear of waiting until the last second and stepping into throws under pressure. That, among other things, is what separates him from other mobile guys like Vince Young and Tim Tebow, who tuck and run at the first sign of trouble. Cam shows true poise in the pocket, which was apparent even in the preseason when he was only completing 40% of his passes. Young and Tebow have never really shown pocket instincts.
In terms of running ability in the open field, of course he is much more agile and elusive than Roethlisberger or Culpepper ever were.

I think people forget how fast and explosive Culpepper was before a knee injury slowed him down. He was downright scary early on in his career. His first season as a starter, he threw for nearly 4000 yards and rushing for another 500.
Cam is smarter with the ball the Culpepper ever was, but I'm hoping he avoids the big-time knee injury the derailed Culpepper. I'm pretty sure Culpepper's injury came against the Panthers... 12/30/2011 1:20:16 PM |

I remember that injury well. I cringed when I saw it, I believe he tore all three ACL, MCL and PCL. That was just brutal for the guy, I felt bad almost, because as mentioned early on he was scary. 12/30/2011 3:00:11 PM |

A freak injury can happen at any time, but IIRC Culpepper actively tried to truck over people, thus exposing himself more often. Cam only does this at the goaline. He realizes the extra yard or two in the open field isn't worth it. 12/30/2011 6:12:33 PM |
