just found this in the footnotes of page 39 of the report. hadn't seen it anywhere else.
Quote : | "71 We did not find any such lists in our email review, but that is not necessarily surprising. To the extent these lists were sent by email, a large amount of email traffic was lost when the Chapel Hill systems were upgraded over the course of time, including in 2010-2011. Also, it is quite conceivable that Crowder and Reynolds deleted emails from their accounts to keep their email boxes below university-imposed size limits or for other reasons." |

Started reading the report and saw this:
Quote : | "In about the fall of 1999, Crowder revised her approach and added standard lecture courses to her course offerings. These classes had all the same attributes as the irregular independent studies classes, with no work requirements beyond the submission of papers that were graded by Crowder. Unlike the independent study paper classes, however, these were listed on the course schedule as lecture classes, often with meeting dates, times and classrooms assigned. Despite those entries on the course schedule, these classes never actually met, the students never had to appear in class, and their only interaction with the AFAM Department was through Crowder." |
Let's say you're an undergraduate student at Chapel Hill, say an English major that for an elective decides "I'm going to take Black Nationalism". First day you show up...and no one's there except you and a couple other people that aren't aware on what the gig is. After wondering "am I in the wrong classroom?" and going to find someone to confirm you're not, there will be no class, word would have to spread on this around the student population don't you think?
edit: it did, I just had to read on, but that struck me as odd
Quote : | "Over time, the paper classes became very popular among certain groups on campus, and by the summer of 2011 there were 3,933 undergraduate enrollments in these classes. Of these enrollments, 2,081 were by non-athlete undergraduate students. Some of the students were genuinely interested in the subject matter and took the class and its paper assignment seriously. Others were simply attracted to the ease with which one could satisfy the paper requirement and obtain a high grade for very little work. Members of certain fraternities, for example, started to sign up for these paper classes, causing Crowder to bemoan to one assistant dean in 2005 that word about them had “gotten into the frat circuit.”" |

Of course word would spread. And that's the real problem, here. Not that a curriculum for jocks would be incredibly easy (duuuhhhh)....but that an entire discipline of academia would become de-legitimized as a result.
They could have picked ANY major, but they specifically chose this one? That's pretty fucked up, in my opinion. No way in hell would the university allow English Lit or Women's Studies to be disgraced like this. And that, to me, is the real shame. An entire academic department at an esteemed public university (whether we want to admit it or not, UNC has a favorable reputation on the whole, this scandal notwithstanding) has been shamefully exposed, and it now brings into question the integrity of similar majors at other universities that had nothing to do with what happened at UNC.

^^The point is that they threw one specific department completely under the bus in order to chase wins. That's basically admitting, as an institution, that they don't value the subject matter of that department. Yet they still offered the degree program.
Clearly, they would not do that to their Law or Journalism departments, now would they?

that really doesn't seem to be how this happened, at least to me. it was a case of a lack of oversight, but it's also not racist to implicitly acknowledge that an african and afro-american studies department is not as important as your law school.]10/24/2014 1:35:11 PM |

^^^And that's my point. If I were a real scholar in that field, I'd be fuckin' livid, man. They clearly chose the department that they felt would generate the least resistance. That's a total admission that they don't value that subject matter AT ALL. But they'll happily take a student's money and hand them a "degree" for their "work."

as far as i understand the timeline, no one "chose" the AFAM department. they discovered easy independent studies, and in doing so found an admin that was very friendly to making things happen for athletes.
as far as i understand, no one at the top level of UNC sat down and said "let's put a schmuck in the AFAM department so we can funnel students there." if that's what happened, then okay. but i don't think it is. 10/24/2014 1:48:07 PM |

OopsPowSrprs All American 8383 Posts user info edit post |
From what I've read, the fraud sprouted organically in AFAM and was left to perpetuate because it benefitted athletics with keeping athletes eligible.
I do believe that if it was another "important" major like journalism, law, etc., that UNC would have shut that shit down. That's not to stay that they may have replicated it in another "lesser" department but that's pure speculation. 10/24/2014 1:52:34 PM |
JesusHChrist All American 4458 Posts user info edit post |
That distinction is trivial, in my opinion.
Whether or not it was sprang up organically is beside the point. The fact that they allowed it to continue in this department (when we all know they'd shut it down in a more distinguished department) is the real embarrassment.
Oh, it's just Afro-studies. Nobody cares. It's not real. Keep it rollin'
That's just as bad, in my opinion, as hand-picking that department from the onset. The sequence of events doesn't really change things. 10/24/2014 1:56:19 PM |
