Front page on WRAL this morning.

This shit kinda irks me. Almost everything I saw yesterday from all sides of the isle were cordial and respectful. It wasn't about rivalries, but remembering an outstanding basketball coach. But this feels like WRAL is using the passing of Dean Smith to take a stab at the other two area programs and that's just fucking shitty.

Condolences to the family, and I think it's in poor taste to talk shit about him now.

But it was a little much that on the WRAL site, they had two main stories on him, then one in the "Local/State" section, then all five of the top Sports Stories were about him. Later this afternoon, they still had the two main stories, the one Local/State, but only 3 of the 5 sports stories are about him.

First off, I was sorry to hear about Smith's passing. I respect Dean and have refrained from commenting, good or bad, about the man. I have one question, though, that I would love to ask the tarholes about their saint. Dean is titled many names: greatest coach ever, ambassador of breaking racial barriers, slayer of his in-state rivals, unprecedented graduation rates, creator of the awesome and fun basketball tactic "four corners", the coach that did things the right way, etc.--all of said names are debatable, but moving on with the question: With the talent that Dean accumulated over his long running career, why did he only muster two national championships. To me, it sounds like a squandering of talent. Some of his classes should have had back-to-back-to-back titles. I often wonder if Dean wasn't so much of a great coach as he was a great recruiter.
