uhh....i thought it was too obvious to even mention that Mr. Eko is very religious, the whole, "I'll pray for you", feeding the man food, juxtaposed shots of him holding and eying the bible, 40 day vow of silence (which is essentially what Lent is, 40 days of some form of fasting) but in this case it was probably more of self punishment for him killing the "others"
