"A bit" doesn't even begin to cover it.
I took a pistol in to have night sights put on that *I provided*, and 6 weeks later, he won't even return phone calls about its status - he quoted me "a couple days" to have it done initially. I'm sure he does good work, but I will never take anything else in there again.
Anyone THAT backed up should not be taking new work unless they are explicitly up-front in telling you that it will take 5x as long as any normal smith would. 5/14/2009 1:09:02 PM |

nothing wrong with variety. My glock may be more dependable than my 1911, but it's not as much fun to shoot.
On that same note, my S&W 629 is more dependable than my Glock, and when I run out of bullets it doubles as a bat. 5/14/2009 8:32:38 PM |

ran 164 rounds through my 1911 this afternoon.
man, that thing jammed with winchester white box like it was COOL. I'm pretty sure I'd shot it in there before with no ill effects...I've had some smithing done on it, but nothing that should affect the feeding. I think it was always either the first or last round in the mag (and I think I solved the first-round jam problem by pulling the slide out of the lock detent to release it, rather than just thumbing the slide release).
fortunately, it feeds my hollow-point PMC and +P Gold Dots without any problem. 5/14/2009 8:47:31 PM |

wwb is DIRTY, that could cause any gun to jam.
though the first and last round jamming is curious.

when's the last time you oiled it? My springfield has some minor feed issues if I haven't shot it in a while, but a quick breakdown of the gun and wiping with an oil rag is all it takes to get it running smoothly again. 5/15/2009 1:07:13 AM |

My Sig P226 feeds WWB just fine...never had a single jam in about 600 rounds or so.
My Sig Mosquito on the other hand, is the most tempermental gun i've ever owned. It jams with CCI Mini Mags (the recommended ammo according to Sig), and like 4 or 5 other .22 ammo I've fed it. I've had the best luck with Thunderbolt and it's pretty much all I shoot through it now. 5/15/2009 8:29:04 AM |

yeah, sounds like my SIG P226. Out of many, many thousands of rounds, I had one misfeed, and that was when the gun was completely filthy (like, had probably shot 500-1000 rounds without cleaning, haha), and shooting some garbage bulk 9mm. 5/15/2009 10:31:18 AM |

I've fired hundreds of rounds through my GP-100 and only had 1 jam. Apparently the lock-up is so tight on the cylinder that after a few kernels of unburnt powder in my hand loads got behind the extractor plate the cylinder wouldn't close.
I still like testing flinch with people by loading 5x .38 and 1x .357 5/15/2009 10:39:58 AM |

Almost every 1911 I've ever shot more than a couple mags through has had stoppages. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of how the things shoot and they're generally good weapons, but their reputation for peerless reliability in some circles perplexes me. I've fired plenty of Colts, Springers and Kimbers too. The only 1911 I can remember shooting several hundred rounds through without a single failure was ironically a cheap Norinco.
My Glocks and Beretta 92 eat everything and run flawlessly all the time. Hardly ever clean either of 'em.
The only stoppage I've ever had with a revolver was a squib load. The bullet stopped in the barrel-to-cylinder gap, tying up the gun. I would imagine you might have problems with that finely tuned S&W if it were dropped into a sand dune though. 5/15/2009 2:41:04 PM |

why is "Personal Defense" ammo so expensive? 5/19/2009 9:57:00 AM |
Nitrocloud Arranging the blocks 3072 Posts user info edit post |
^Typically loaded with exotic bullets that are expensive components themselves. There's a bit of markup, but they are possibly made in a far less grander scale than the regular ammunition (WWB for example) and possibly have better QC, but standard ammo doesn't seem to fail either.
I use Cor-Bon ammunition that is loaded with Barnes' XPB, which are significantly more expensive than my standard JSP rounds I hand load myself. 5/19/2009 11:47:23 AM |

Quote : | "why is "Personal Defense" ammo so expensive?" |
The biggest reason is people (including me) will pay more.
They are loaded with components that cost more to start with. The biggest difference is premium bullets cost more to research/develop and manufacture. That said, the cost difference on say 100 unloaded bullets of cheap vs premium is anywhere from $3-10 for most stuff. That definitely doesn't represent the cost difference of loaded ammo.
The powders used are usually lower flash and do cost a tiny bit more too.
Another reason is the quality control is supposed to be higher. I've never had a bad centerfire cartridge out of the countless thousands I've shot, but I have heard of a few duds in bulk ammo. I've never heard of a dud in any premium centerfire ammo.
Lets do a price comparison... A box of 38 Special +P 125gr Speer Gold Dots is around $25 for 20, or $125 per hundred. You can go cheaper with Double Tap; it's about $80 per hundred shipped.
A 100 round box of cheap Winchester 38 Specials is around $30 at Walmart.
Cost of reloading 100 rounds of Gold Dots with all new components: -bullets $21 -brass $20 -primers $4 -powder $2 total $47
Cost of reloading 100 rounds of bulk FMJ with all new components: -bullets $12 -brass $20 -primers $4 -powder $1.50 total $37.50 (shit, it's cheaper to buy bulk winchester at Walmart if you don't have brass)
So, the difference when reloading is around $9-10 per hundred, but they charge you $95 more for Speer or $50 more for Double Tap.
That's quite the mark up. I still buy a few boxes of self defense ammo here and there because I'm afraid of any possible legal issues with using reloads and because Double Tap's ballistics are beyond my handloads.

When I got my 357 a few years ago I had only shot 22LR and 9mm. With 357 mag ammo I'd start flinching after the first cylinder full. Then I started reloading and that added another level of power. I finally got used to it, but more than 50 rounds of full magnum reloads I'd still flinch.
Then I got my 480 Ruger...and never flinched with my 357 again.
I would also flinch with my 308 (it's a 6 lb rifle) after 10 or so rounds til I went to the range a few times with my boss and his 458 winmag.
IMO you can't beat stepping up to the next level in recoil to make yourself realize there's nothing to controlling a smaller caliber. If you don't have the opportunity to shoot a bigger gun then the mixed loads and empty chambers work almost as well. Taking a lot of breaks during a shooting session and a lot of dry firing helps too. 5/19/2009 10:56:55 PM |

I just got my Saiga 12 back from having the factory threads removed and the barrel tapped for Rem chokes. I had Steve Rose at Rose Action Sports in KY do the work. The turnaround was fast, the price was very reasonable, and I couldn't have asked for better quality workmanship and CS.
Contact gunsmith@roseactionsports.com for info and pricing if anyone is interested. Right now, the price is $109 for the barrel work, three chokes, a wrench, and return shipping.
Pics of the conversion -
Here's what I got to go with it - Full, Mod., and Imp. Cyl. chokes
No more factory threading
Very good job finishing the crown - smooth, flush fit
Smoothly reamed inside, with nice, tight threads
This is exactly what it was modified to accept - standard Remington style choke tubes

Anybody have an opinion on the debate between 9mm and .40?
I'm trying to decide between an XDm 9mm and .40 and I'm really not sure.
I've tried the XDm 9mm before and it's a sweet shooting gun, I really like it, but then again I wouldn't mind having the .40 but not sure if will like the snap of it, the debates on gun forums are endless and don't ever really get anywhere, so I figure just trying them would be the best way but PDHSC doesn't rent anything in .40 there anymore 5/28/2009 12:41:16 AM |

I have multiple 9mm guns, one of which, a KelTec P11, also has a 40 SW/357 sig slide setup. I shoot a 9mm classic XD. and a SW99 in 40 SW. There is not a very large difference in recoil, esp with range loads. +P+/+P stuff you can tell the difference. Either one is a great choice, and easy to get ammo for. The only issue is that right now at least 40 ammo is easier to come by. 5/28/2009 2:03:23 AM |
JCASHFAN All American 13916 Posts user info edit post |
^^ This debate is ridiculously old. The key points: 1) All pistol cartridges are marginal 2) The difference between 9mm, 38SPC, .40S&W, & .45ACP are marginal as well 3) Shot placement counts more than caliber 4) Software counts more than hardware. 5) No one ever died from having extra BBs.
Just get the one you feel confident with, that you're willing to train with, and practice. You get four more rounds out of the XD 9 than XD 40 and you'll have faster follow up shots, however it is still a "weaker" round.

WHAT?!?! Since when?
As for the XDs - I have one and I love it. No problems, whatsoever. As for deciding between the 9 and 40, it comes down to which you feel most comfortable with/better shot with.
^said it best - there are only slight differences between the two, so you just need to shoot both and decide that way.
Are you speaking XD or XDM?
I have the XD40, so if you can get an XD9, I'll go to the range with you and you can try mine (just pay your own range fee + get ammo)5/28/2009 7:37:19 AM |

Get the 9mm. You'll be happier overall.
Quote : | "Hypothetically, would he face prison time or be required to surrender or demil the weapon?" |
You MUST destroy or demil the weapon according to current ATF regs. If he was caught or ratted out, a monetary fine and prison time would be likely.
If the grandfather had registered the weapon when there was a grace period back in the day it would have been a legal weapon, but since it's too late, those are your only options.
Tis a fine gun. If you have any more questions, let me know.
