that's not how I interpreted his death scene and I watched it a few times. While he thought he was passively taking on all of the faerie attack, it was actually growing inside of him giving him that "small tickling feeling" and when eric grabs him you can see it all just start to pour out of him. but I could be wrong, I just didn't see eric actually stake him and russell's reaction was a really slow "fuck" as he realized what was happening.

I just watched it again. The stake does not move and the end of it stays in the shot the entire time so if he was supposed to have been staked they could have made it more clear by not making it last 20 seconds. Still looks like faerie explosion to me.

I must admit, I was a little confused by Eric's staking of Russell initially. I didn't get why he didn't immediately explode. Then I thought "well maybe he missed his heart." And I thought, "well maybe it takes longer for him to explode since he is so old." And then he lit up and cracked and stuff... and then exploded.

I was a little confused by it all, but chalked the death up to the stake and the time it took to happen to the faery blood/light in him.

I interpretted russell's staking to also be more of a slow stake versus a quick one. Salome was also staked slowly in this episode where she also got off a final line before collapsing in to goo. I just think it was a more dramatic staking than some others that were simply slammed in to the chest.

I would say Russell's death was a bit longer while the fearie light escaped him.

the whole plot line for the shifters was filled w/ "zombie logic" type stuff

why was sam blindfolded but not handcuffed, why didnt they turn into flies and go into emma's pen instead of comforting her from next door, etc etc

them being in emma's pen woulda been a little obvious to anyone that happened to walk by. meanwhile, if they shift while no one is watching they won't raise suspicion when the vamps see them later.

also i'm pretty sure sam's hands were bound and he shifted out of it. could be wrong about that part though. and i thought sam's murder-shifting was hilarious. i think more things need to be killed by sam exploding out of their head. it's fucking hilarious.
