Quote : | "I never said he didn't use any buses. I merely pointed to buses capable of transporting an extra 25,000 people that were within a mile of the Superdome. In other words, state and local authorities did not fully utilize/manage available resources." |
August 26: Katrina was still only a Category 2 when it was 200 miles from New Orleans.
August 28: Mayor Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation and sent buses to designated pickup points throughout the city.
Residents had 24 hours to evacuate. If they didn't show up at the pickup points, why is it Nagin's fault?
His evacuation order told residents;
Quote : | "He also opened the Louisiana Superdome as a shelter of last resort that would begin accepting people around Noon. He said the Dome would have few supplies and that people were expected to bring food and other necessary items. RTA buses were going to be sent to pick up those going to shelters at designated pickup points.
Nagin discouraged staying in the Superdome, saying that people would not have access to power and possibly plumbing." |

^^ you do realize that slippery slope is a logical fallacy? No half-baked, nebulous rhetoric is going to change the fact that the feds haven't taken over even when there have been much better opportunities to do so.
Furthermore, your childish ivory tower analysis does not even attempt to address the (significant) forces that naturally work against any great disruption of the fed-state power balance. Real life isn't some movie where the big bad federal government can flood the streets with troops over night and take over. (geez, they cant even get troops to the right state) 9/10/2005 9:26:00 PM |

soooo, if they get their ass drowned when they didn't respond to AN EVACUATION, then how is it dubya's fault?
BTW, how much food was at this "shelter of last resort?" How many generators were at this "shelter of last resort?" How much water was at this "shelter of last resort?" Doesn't sound like much of a shelter to me, but it does have the "last resort" part down. Thats the LAST place I'd be going...
lets also not forget that, according to you, the gov'ner asked for a state of emergency to be called on the TWENTY-SEVENTH. I'm no mathematician, but if the GOVERNOR thinks her state is fucked, then I'd be for telling my citizens to get the fuck out. but no, he waits until the NEXT day... suuuuuuuuuuuuuure, pryderi. Nagin did everything perfectly. Remind me again how many times he tried to raise money in NO to fix the leevees again...9/11/2005 1:07:57 AM |

Declaring a state of emergency is different than declaring a mandatory evacuation. When there's been a state of emergency in NC, was Raleigh told to mandatorily evacuate? No. I didn't think so.
It wasn't until the morning of the 28th that Hurricane Katrina was upgraded to a category 4 hurricane, at which time Nagin called for the mandatory evacuation:
Quote : | ""Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a test. This is the real deal," New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin said at a news conference. "Board up your homes, make sure you have enough medicine, make sure the car has enough gas. Do all things you normally do for a hurricane but treat this one differently because it is pointed towards New Orleans."
Katrina gained strength overnight, become a Category 4 monster with 145 mph sustained winds as it moved over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday." |
On August 29th, Michael Brown the head of FEMA ordered first responders not to respond.
Also, New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the country, and the levees were a federal project.

God that sounds like a Bill O'Reilly impersonation. You're such a fuckwad. The Superdome is on higher ground. When your apartment or home is underwater, it's a stupid idea to drown next to your fucking refrigerator.

i dont think aaron was saying that he'd rather drown by his refrigerator than go to the superdome..... he was trying to show that the area was unprepared for the hurricane, on the local level 9/11/2005 2:26:27 AM |

It was a mandatory evacuation. Officials weren't going to use resources to stock the refrigerators @ the Superdome in a 24 hour time period.
I give this thread a "Mission Accomplished". 9/11/2005 9:06:53 AM |

Oh, so its OK to say "OMFG ITS GOING TO BE HORRIBLE!!!" but not get people out of the way of something that will be horrible, right? I like that logic!
btw, how about you try and explain to me how it is a good idea to say "people. come here for safety, but you can't leave once you get here!" and then NOT have food, water, or electricity at the place you tell them to go to? we treat our god damned PRISONERS better than that.9/11/2005 6:06:58 PM |

FEMA's 4 day absence caused numerous deaths.
Quote : | "NEW ORLEANS — The husband-and-wife owners of a nursing home were charged with homicide because they did not evacuate 34 elderly patients who died after Hurricane Katrina (search) struck, the first major criminal case related to the storm's still-rising death toll." |
The Bush administration should be prosecuted as well.9/20/2005 8:21:02 AM |
