absolutely. i've started to just not really care as much.

i've been escorted out of places, yelled at a lot, confronted a lot, gotten lots of dirty looks, but oh well, its a free country, public areas, you can do what you want.

yah, they are fairly obtainable, but yes, super cheap and very cheaply built. sorta like the IKEA take on cameras... definitely a cult-following of sorts

i hear ya. i think i've seen them in the MoMa store in Manhattan, as well as Halcyon (a vinyl store in Dumbo), and some random skater-ish stores might carry them, probably (as with all electronics these days) the best way to get them is online.

Not to be a Contrary McGee or anything, but there are plenty of things, niche products and whatever, that, even online, are hard to find. What I'm getting at is that Amazon sells this shit.

Not a Canon 50mm f/1.0L

Shits are numbered and are going for up to 5 grand on ebay. However, with one of those you can handhold at midnight and still get exposed shots.

Some photos I took at the Red and White game and the NCSu/ECU baseball game the other day. All images belong to NCSU media.
Of course they are all DRASTICALLY resized.

i want the 10.5mm DX nikkor lense... 180 degrees of viewing... mmmmmmm

night shots... depends on what you are going for... i guess... the noct is obviously made for night shots but it is hella expensive. not something you can just walk up to a store and buy.

it all depends....

If it was Canon, I'd be able to tell you. However, for night stuff, go with the lowest f# you can get. Portraits, usually get the best glass you can afford (reviews will usually talk about how sharp a lens is, so buy the sharpest), for sharp zooms, once again, the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L is the standard. It is an amazing lens. I am not sure if anything Nikon makes compares to Canon's L lenses.

I'm sure this post is nothing you didn't already know.

gotta have insurance on that puppy.

but interesting about the sharpness and low f#

i might not make a purchase super soon, but at some point

When I pay off all my credit card debt, I'm going to try to take out a loan for 6-7k and buy some gear I'd be happy with.

Canon 30D+battery grip = 1500
24-70 f/2.8L = 1200
70-200 f/2.8L = 1500
2 580ex Flashes = 400 each
Gitzo monopod and tripod = 500-700
65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro Photo = 800
1.4 EX teleconverter = 400

*sigh*

3 questions for Ronny:

1) why exactly do you need 2 flashes? so you can take stuff really fast? or so that you can bounce light with one of them?

2) how's a tripod or monopod gonna be $500? why so much?

3) what's the purpose of teleconverters? to flatten the depth of field?

Ill answer, I suppose. The more flashes the better and more creative lighting scenarios you can create. Have one right and one left of the camera for example.

Tripods can easily cost a fortune to get something truely stable. The more exspenive L series lenses contain a lot of glass elements and metal and are very heavy. Many tripods in the upper level do not come with the head so you'll have purchase that extra. I have a Bogen tripod and two heads for it.

Teleconverters simlpy extend the focal length of the lens you have (assuming it is compatible with your specific lens). Canon makes a 1.4x and 2.0x, and many sports and wildlife shooters can opt for something like this as a bridge to a massive zoom (400mm with 2x = 800mm). Teleconverters reduce overall sharpness and light efficiency though, which can be a negative.

My current camera/lens combo is:

Canon 5D with
Canon 17-40L
Canon 24-70L
Canon 75-300IS
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Sigma 28mm

My next lens will be the Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS to replace my softer 75-300.

Before I had the 5D I owned a 20D.

^ah awesome, thanks

someone also just IMed me saying that wireless flashes can trigger each other, which sounds pretty crazy

sounds like a great setup you've got there. interesting that you've got a sigma, i'm hesitant about em.

interesting about the teleconverter, sounds like something i wouldn't need anytime soon

i'd like to stick to nikkor lenses... but you can get a good sigma... and it'll be an awesome addition with some price subtraction

but we don't really have a "higher series" like that.

^and they aren't very common for our age bracket... sooo... its a bit surprising i guess...

For a Canon, you're best off to scrape up the extra 200 bucks and buy a 24-70. Pretty much the standard walkaround lens for pros. It'll be the next lens I buy.
