We lost our entire defensive line in 2003. We lost most of our starters, including all of our depth for next season.

Look at the basketball talent now compared to 5 years ago too.
5 years ago we just made our 1st NCAA tournament.
What I got out of this thread is that even though Herb has had more success than Chuck, it's ok because Chuck gets hype and intense.
Also I would like to note, in the 3 years before Chuck got here Mike O'Cain went 6-5, 7-5, and 6-6. Is that really any better than where we are now????
O'Cain recruited Torry Holt, Philip Rivers, etc. so he produced NFL talent too.3/22/2006 8:35:35 PM |

When you look at that in a relative sense, it's a wash.
NC State is a terrible football program. Going to a bowl game 4/5 years is awesome for this school.
As far as basketball, compared to recent history, going to 5 straight NCAA's is quite a feat as well.
I wouldn't be so quick to say Herb's had more success, though.3/22/2006 10:46:12 PM |

here is why fb is different:
investment
if we still played in the old C-F stadium and made these bowls, id be happy. But look at what we have now. Look at the money sunk into the stadium, coaching staff, facilities, etc. This is a championship level investment. Now, as I'm sure many of you would agree, the return from your investment should at least equal what you put into it.
big investment=big results, no matter who you are. if you dont want to be expected to perform on a championship level, then dont have the highest paid staff and the best facilities. based on this idea, i want dividends soon. If Amato doesnt show improvement the next two years that shows he's on track to win a championship, why should he be retained? Shouldnt we get a coach who could help us get a better return on our investment? or do we just sit around with our thumbs up our asses and wait for the rest of college fb's programs to catch up facility and staff wise and then say "well, we're par for the course now".
at the least, if amato cant win the acc (or at least the division) or get to the bcs (or even back-to-back new years day bowls) and we want to keep him, he and the staff should take a paycut.

^ generally i would agree with you that you should get back at least an equal amount of what you invested. the problem with this though is that while we have been putting all this money into C-F, nearly all of the other schools in the conference have too. if you start doing work on your car so that you can beat the guys that beat everyone else, what do you expect when the big boys and all the others that are just as fast as you begin modifying their cars too. i don't remember the number, but since, i believe 1999, nearly all of the ACC schools have put an astronomical amount of money into their football facilities. call it bad timing on our part. the upgrades to C-F were badly needed though.

It was one of the worst stadiums in America. Need I remind you of the trailor in the sky?
Now, granted... we didn't have to build trump Towers... but we needed something.

To be fair, it isn't like we haven't invested in the basketball program. Regardless of whether we should have renovated Reynolds instead a la Allen Fieldhouse, basketball has a nice new arena. It would probably be a better layout (more like the Comcast Center) if not for the Hurricanes leeching onto it and having it built for hockey, but bball got first rate facilities, and now have a practice facility as well. 3/23/2006 7:23:28 AM |

I have not read hardly any of this thread, but don't you think that whenever there is a lot of negative talk surrounding coaches (Ex. Herb and Chuck) that this hurts recruiting and the program. I mean what recruit would want to come here when they hear all this shit from fans and media saying that we want to get rid of our coach, and this is mostly directed towards the b-ball program. I think we are kinda shooting ourselves in the foot here complaining about how much we hate the way our programs our ran. Hell if I was a b-ball or football player I wouldn't come here, I mean why would I play for a coach if the school's fans don't even support them... 3/23/2006 8:19:15 AM |

Amato can keep his job by simply going to a bowl game every year, unless he starts losing the shitty ones.
Herb cant sneak into the NCAA's every year and keep his job. Its a double standard, but if we lose in football, its almost expected. People have been expecting the basketball program to get back to the top for YEARS, and since we're so close now, it kills everyone to know that we cant get over the hump. 3/23/2006 11:26:26 AM |

Amato's job is a lot more unstable then Herb's.
You see, Herb never ever promises what he can't deliver. Ever. Call that boring, call that conservative, but he doesn't do it.
Amato promised the world and failed to deliver, even with PR. Whats more, he had a losing season and an underachieving season and two losses to a Carolina FB team that isn't, wasn't ever, and probably never be, very good.
Herb can keep going to the NCAA for the remaining decade and by virtue of luck would probably advance to at least one elite 8. Enough to keep his job. 3/23/2006 1:39:46 PM |

Amato also recruits a lot of talent which goes to waste
he gets miami's and fsu's leftovers but has absolutely no way to control them and make them play smart

-We're a basketball school. Should FSU have the same basketball and football expectations? No. - Herb's been here 10 years. Chuck, 5. Football usually takes 3 times as long to build - Chuck's proven he can build a great offense, defense, and special teams... it's a matter of putting them together.
Herb, on the other hand has the same flaws every year. Rebounding, ballhandling, athleticism, etc.
I'm not a huge huge Amato fan, but I think he's done a pretty good job here. Not that Herb hasnt, like I said... I just want a new offense and I think a lot of these problems would fix themselves in BBall.
I have more hope for the future with Amato, put it that way. I've lost hope in basketball unless something changes. Every year it becomes more evident that it's not personnel, it's the system

so what was our problem the first 5 years of herb's tenure?
it's funny that you say our system has been our problem, when we've made the ncaa tournament every year since we switched to it, and that was the biggest change from year 5 to year 6 for herb. 3/23/2006 2:00:03 PM |

I think we've made the NCAA's despite the system, not becuase of it.
We have the athleticism now so that we don't need it.... that may not have been so true back then.
I truly think the flaws in this offense are whats holding us back, not necessarily talent or even Herb. I don't think Herb's that great of a game coach, but when you couple that with no rebounding and taking way too many 3's, it hurts your abilities to be consistent.
Just my opinion 3/23/2006 2:08:41 PM |

what I don't get is this:
NCSU has the better football team supposedly, right? they lose to carolina, who is considered a shitty football team, two years in a row and that's ok. but they lose to a UNC basketball team with arguably the most tradition of any team in the nation and arguably the best coach, and all of a sudden that's unacceptable? I don't get it.
and before you say "state was a better team than UNC this year" let me just tell you that you're wrong. that UNC team was MAJORLY underrated by just about everyone. 3/23/2006 2:18:16 PM |
