This is pretty fucking hilarious if you ask me.
And Lavin is a fucking dumbass. He wants this stupid ass guaranteed money when he knows he's going to get paid out the ass with all of the extra shit. I'm actually surprised he's getting paid this well to be at ESPN right now. He doesn't do shit for the money he's getting.
It would be really embarassing if we offered Lavin the job and he ended up turning us down...I don't care if it's because of contract problems....we would be a joke. 4/24/2006 3:58:50 PM |

see, what i don't get is this:
he will be guaranteed his first year's salary. i mean, there's NO WAY we will fire him before he coaches a full season. so, that should be $1mil or more guaranteed right there. that has to be more than he'd be guaranteed to make at ESPN for at least 3-4 years.
plus, there have to be several other ways to guarantee him money that doesn't come from the base salary.
this shouldn't be as big of a hold up as it's being made out to be, but that's just my opinion 4/24/2006 4:01:37 PM |

^^^Good questions. I guess it all depends on how much he makes at ESPN. Which I can't imagine it being that much...but apparently it is more than I thought.
Or he might just be acting like a bitch right now.

I honestly think that all of this "contract holding it up" crap is just some bullshit they came up with to justify a damn ESPN analyst turning us down. If an offer had been made for him to be here on friday, i think that by now he would be our coach. Im beginning to think now that all of this "contract" talk is just a scapegoat...

I am convinced now that Lavin is the best hire on the board, he will recruit well, and even if he only gives us 3-5 years, that will give us some much needed national exposure/press (positive) and set us up to take another swipe at a huge "roy williams" style hire, and if he stays long term and is successfull that is good too
win/win with what is left on the board! 4/24/2006 7:39:44 PM |

Those 2 were the only REAL good coaches that were ever on the board.
That is the problem. The coaching pool is not deep right now and there are not many out there to get this offseason. 4/24/2006 7:43:27 PM |

Then that means he sucked and we ran his out. If he does well, he'll probably stay unless a West Cost program like Zona opens up (which is possible). But if he does well here and builds something good, he probably won't leave after 3-5 years.4/24/2006 9:25:46 PM |

What's so bad about Lavin?
He had one bad year at UCLA in which there was just obvious chemistry problems within the team and the coach.
Other than that, I think he has a pretty stellar record and is obviously a great recruiter.
Hopefully he's even better now that's he learned possibly learned his lesson and been an analyst. 4/25/2006 10:05:47 AM |

the only guaranteed money for coaches is what the school itself pays, which is not $1 million+, it is probably a couple hundred thou. The rest are other contracts, promotions and sponsorships. That is why he is scared to leave ESPN because 500,000 > 250,000 guaranteed 4/25/2006 12:42:32 PM |
PackBacker All American 14415 Posts user info edit post |
^ The problem is that in the NC school system, the only amount of money that can be guaranteed is the maximum amount that is paid by the school (And the UNC system says that the max amt. of money you can pay a head coach from school funds is $250k... I think it's 250?).
UNC and Roy found a way around this, and I would imagine the delay is that we are attempting to as well. The money we're going to pay him, we've got to be able to guarantee in his contract.... but that would brake UNC system rules.
Not sure how UNC got around it, but that's what we're attempting to do at the moment 4/25/2006 12:46:05 PM |
jbrick83 All American 23447 Posts user info edit post |
^I'm pretty sure the state of NC gave them exception in their case and allowed them to do a few things just to match Roy's salary at UNC.
We don't have that same situation as Lavin is at ESPN (which means he hasn't been coaching for about 3 years...which is great). 4/25/2006 12:55:16 PM |
ncWOLFsu Gottfather FTL 12586 Posts user info edit post |
the WPC can guarantee money. they can set up a trust fund just like what roy has at UNC. 4/25/2006 12:56:23 PM |
PackBacker All American 14415 Posts user info edit post |
^^ I think his contract with ESPN is guaranteed for so many millions per year. The problem is that we can't match that GUARANTEE, which is the questions we're having with him right now (Or as I understand it).
If we can't match the guaranteed money he gets from ESPN, don't expect him to come here.
I could be wrong here, but as I understand it, that's the problem. For instance, if we would have fired Herb, the only money we'd pay him through the rest of his contract would be the guaranteed $250k per year. (Again, as i understand it). Lavin isn't satisfied with that guarantee becuase ESPN guarantees millions
As i hear it, we're taking the UNC school of contracts and figuring out how we can guarantee his annual contract at NC State, instead of a fraction of it

not necessarily. i still think we'd have heard something by now if it were lavin. if we don't hear anything by tomorrow, i would say it's defintely NOT lavin, and most likely beilein.
if it's beilein, that would explain why we haven't been hearing much. WVU has a banquet sunday night for the players, including pittsnogle and beilein's son. if he's our guy, you can bet he'll wait until after that banquet for it to become official. also, the rumors that he is willing to pay half is buyout would probably have to be true if he's our guy. i just don't see us ponying up all $3-$3.5mil to do it ($3.5 mil if WVU decides to be gay and pick up the optional year at the end of his contract).
anyway, i'm losing hope that it's lavin and beginning to think it will be beilein. 4/25/2006 1:12:14 PM |

^ last I checked he he directly to the top of the list as soon as the announcement was made that Herb left and has been working his way down every since. How can you play negotiation time with different coaches.
That statement implies that Fowler hasn't made any progress, or no coaches have been approached which isn't true. He has been interviewing and been turned down. If rumors are true he is in contract negotiations with a potential coach right now. The way I see it, he was prepared and no one as more capable would have done any better at this point. 4/25/2006 2:10:50 PM |

I heard Fowler was making calls to coaches two weeks before Herb officially left because Herb had already let him know that he was putting out feelers for other jobs.
So you actually don't really know what you're talking about. If anything...Fowler might suck as a closer...but since we really don't know what went on in the negotiations, then we have no idea. 4/25/2006 2:20:05 PM |
