I'm just shocked that he garnered, what, 36% of the vote. That's kind of scary if you think about it. I just have to convince myself that most of those votes came from straight ticket voters that didn't think about what they were doing.

This is just me going out on a limb and wildly speculating, but...

Vernon could very well be the new George Wallace. He uses the politics of fear to gather millions of vocal supporters. The GOP won't support him (he was the only candidate not invited to meet w/ Bush when he was in Greensboro), and that party is the only one he is remotely close to. Wallace ran on wedge issues like bussing and growing trade deficits, all while maintaining the guise of the "law and order" candidate. We've seen that while Robinson wasn't popular in Raleigh and Greensboro, both urban areas. He could very well win a race in a less urban, diverse area based on these issues, especially in poorer areas where he can blame illegal immigration, race quotas, etc. for the lack of weath or employment, similar to Wallace taking hold in poor Alabama. We know there are enough people who agree with his agenda nationwide (80% of contributions from out of state), so he has national appeal and attention. If he wins a major office somewhere (anywhere, I mean, residence didnt keep him out of this race), he should pick up the momentum to gain support for his anti-immigrant, anti-liberal, "law and order" platform, just as Wallace did with segregation, protectionism, and "law and order".

He'll be back. Thankfully, he'll never amount to more than a blurb in an US history book at the most, and a small citation in an NC history book at the least, that is, if he ever wins anything.
