Daytime running lights are on pretty much all cars, which has decreased this problem significantly. My car has auto lights, which come on when it gets dark or... when I turn on my fucking wipers! I cannot for the life of me understand why this isn't a feature in all new cars. I don't want it mandated by law, but you'd think that automakers would realize this is a good idea.

I'd say a good 20% of the cars on I-40 this morning did not have their lights on.

OMG I was so about to post in my thread until I saw this one!

Lady in a GREY lexus with no lights on. That car blended in with everything until you got right up on it. Guess what she was doing? Talking on her cell phone and not signaling when she was moving lanes. I said a few choice words this morning.

bingo. so turn on your damn lights fucktards
Quote :
"North Carolina General Statutes § 20-129 Required lighting equipment of vehicles

Legal Research Home >

(a) When Vehicles Must Be Equipped. Every vehicle upon a highway within this State shall be equipped with lighted headlamps and rear lamps as required for different classes of vehicles, and subject to exemption with reference to lights on parked vehicles as declared in G.S. 20-134:

(1) During the period from sunset to sunrise,

(2) When there is not sufficient light to render clearly discernible any person on the highway at a distance of 400 feet ahead, or

(3) Repealed by Session Laws 1989 (Reg. Sess., 1990), c. 822, s. 1.

(4) At any other time when windshield wipers are in use as a result of smoke, fog, rain, sleet, or snow, or when inclement weather or environmental factors severely reduce the ability to clearly discern persons and vehicles on the street and highway at a distance of 500 feet ahead, provided, however, the provisions of this subdivision shall not apply to instances when windshield wipers are used intermittently in misting rain, sleet, or snow. Any person violating this subdivision during the period from October 1, 1990, through December 31, 1991, shall be given a warning of the violation only. Thereafter, any person violating this subdivision shall have committed an infraction and shall pay a fine of five dollars ($5.00) and shall not be assessed court costs. No drivers license points, insurance points or premium surcharge shall be assessed on account of violation of this subdivision and no negligence or liability shall be assessed on or imputed to any party on account of a violation of this subdivision. The Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and the Superintendent of Public Instruction shall incorporate into driver education programs and driver licensing programs instruction designed to encourage compliance with this subdivision as an important means of reducing accidents by making vehicles more discernible during periods of limited visibility."

^ Yes. I especially hate it when gray/silver cars do this.

Seems like this kind of idiocy is more common in Raleigh than anywhere else in NC I've lived. Why's that?

You have to hit them head on.

and then be all, "yo I didn't see you cause your lights were off. Now fix my car."

i never think about this anymore- the last two vehicles i have either daytime running lights, or full out automatic lights (everything would come on, including wipers when it started to rain)

I'm confused. Where I come from (California), you pull out into the intersection before making a left turn. It drives me nuts when people hang out behind the white line. What is the law?

I'm from NJ, and I too pull into the intersection. It's a free pass on yellow. Not sure why a lot of people wait behind the line here when the light is green.

I've noticed this too. I think people are just less aggreesive in the south, unless they own a 4x4, and then they go over the medians.

I pull into the intersection, but I don't trust the idiots going the other way so I wont go until I am sure they are stopping/my light is turning red. I'm sure it makes the guy right behind me but I've seen too many idiots run reds those few seconds after.

Question: At a light, when I am making a left hand turn, and am the first car, am I allowed to pull out into the intersection, and wait to make my turn, or must I remain behind the painted white line, until I am clear enough to make my left hand turn? I ask this, because many people pull up and stick out into the intersection until they can go, but I don't know if I can fail a test for doing this.

Answer:
You can and should pull half the way across the intersection to make your left turn. This also lets vehicles behind you get into the intersection to complete their turns behind you.

It is illegal though to block the crosswalk. So if you pull out, have enough room to get past the crosswalk.

Yeah, driving from CH to Raleigh this morning on 40 wouldn't have been quite so bad if it wasn't for the assholes this thread is intended for.

It boggles my mind how completely oblivious people can be.

Last input, from the NC vehicle code: http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/ByChapter/Chapter_20.html

§ 20-153. Turning at intersections.

(a) Right Turns. – Both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

(b) Left Turns. – The driver of a vehicle intending to turn left at any intersection shall approach the intersection in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of travel of that vehicle, and, after entering the intersection, the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection in a lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction upon the roadway being entered.

(c) Local authorities and the Department of Transportation, in their respective jurisdictions, may modify the foregoing method of turning at intersections by clearly indicating by buttons, markers, or other direction signs within an intersection the course to be followed by vehicles turning thereat, and it shall be unlawful for any driver to fail to turn in a manner as so directed. (1937, c. 407, s. 115; 1955, c. 913, s. 5; 1973, c. 1330, s. 18; 1977, c. 464, s. 34; 1997-405, s. 1.)

§ 20-158. Vehicle control signs and signals.

(2) a. When a traffic signal is emitting a steady red circular light controlling traffic approaching an intersection, an approaching vehicle facing the red light shall come to a stop and shall not enter the intersection. After coming to a complete stop and unless prohibited by an appropriate sign, that approaching vehicle may make a right turn.
