I have been walking the lake all summer and saw very few people. Now everyone is out there. Its not just students coming back either its a bunch of older people who wouldn't run or walk when it was hot. I think its sad you only work out when its cool outside.

Just got back.

Ran 1/2 a mile till the dog gave out and then walked the rest.

There was a high school cross country team out there practicing.

Other than that about 3 old guys and some lady, that was it.

My I'm sweaty.

well. . . for the summer, i switched from afternoons to the morning. it's still real humid at 7 am but not as hot. and it's certainly less crowded.

actually, since classes started, it seems there are even fewer people out there than there were at the same time during the summer.

^^ The whole thing meaning both sides, or just the paved side? I can do the paved side without stopping, but I'm slow as shit by the end.

^^just the paved...furthest i've gotten without stopping ever is from the small parking lot on lake dam(going towards marina) to the end of the hills, which is about 70 percent or so

The section from the hills back to the dam is mostly downhill with only a few short uphill sections. It gets pretty easy after you make it up that long hill that is curving to the left (running counter-clockwise.)

I think you'd be golden if you park in the lot at the top of Avent Ferry (across the bridge from the boat rentals) and run the hills first.

yeah thats one someone else told me...never tried it but i think if i could get by the hills i'd have enough to run the flat part...that last long hill that curves left that you refered to is a biiitttttccchhhhhhh...cant stand that freaking hill...it beats going clockwise and having to go up that really long hill at the other end though

Back in 1997 when I was a freshman at Athens Drive I ran Lake Johnson for the first time, on the cross country team.

10 years later I still run it. You can set up so many variations for a workout its nice.

Easiest workout is the marina to the dam and back, flat. If you want to keep going, go past Lake Dam to the other side, its flat and paved still, but no markers.

If you want to do the paved loop, do the hills first if starting out. BUT try to speed up the last part.

Do the hills LAST if you want to add some strength.

The trail side can be tricky, so make sure to be take your time in some of the areas, especially where you have tons of roots popping up.

You can make the hill side a "hill" workout, back up and down too.

There are 2 hills on the Athens Drive High side that are great for hill workouts, on the unpaved side. One is actually paved, it goes up to the football stadium parking area, and doing it at a up-tempo speed several times is a great speed workout.

The other hill is closer to the marina, and it is gravel, used to be a dirt hill, its "the hill" from the CC course that Athens uses. It goes up to the pool. You could make a loop of both, up one, easy jog to the other, down the other, and so on.

So just so many things to do. And yes hot girls too.

Sometimes dogs will get in the way but thats everywhere.

I recommend going at 7am at daybreak. Or 6:30 PM for the girls

I swear I could run Johnson blindfolded now.

I did a diff. routine today bc the lots were full... and it about killed me I always run the hills first. This time I ran the flat part first and the hills last... I wanted to die (but I did it!!).

I haven't ever timed myself... but by the time I leave my car, run a lap, and get back in my car... it's right around 30 mins

I'm sure it's over 30 minutes for me to run the whole thing. I'm not trying to pretend like I'm fast or anything.

yes at least try to do the entire thing without stopping, that is best- Sometimes you will see dudes fly by ya and stop a few yards ahead. Granted that could be their workout that day, but rarely will somebody actually be doing 5 minute miles at Johnson

Welp on my way right now to try out my new shoes I got yesterday, turns out size 9.5 might be to small, got 10.5!!

The paved loop is not even a full 3 miles. If you can run a 5K in under 30, you can run Lake J around 30 or less (giving some leeway because of the hills).

The last time I timed myself was Race for the Cure... which I ran in 24 mins. and the route is fairly flat with one long hill. My pace wasn't very fast (well not fast to those who run all the time). It probably takes me around 28 to run the lake because I am slow as crap up the hills.

I bet you would be surprised if you actually timed yourself...

Is it snake mating season or something? I saw 2 copperheads crawling across the path yesterday. They were by the 1.25 and 2 mile markers. I run there a few times a week and hadn't seen any this year. My dog almost stepped on one of them.
