It's debateable. Over all more ps2 units were sold until just recently. Xbox still has strong numbers compared to ps2 and surpassed ps2's total volumn sold like a year ago. The sheer number of titles available for xbox versus ps2 was overwhelming.
So while technically ps2 won the initial battle, xbox overtook them in sales and kept going.
I don't know where the CNN article is about it.

Uh... worldwide PS2 total console sales dominate XBox sales over the lifetime of both consoles. Obscenely so.
As far as 360 vs. PS3 sales go, the 360 had a one year head start, isn't priced as prohibitively (read: cheaper) and the 360 didn't have any competition when it came out. It's really not a huge shock.
The question is just going to be whether Sony can ride out the lull in sales until next year when the exclusive games people might actually want to play come out on the PS3.
In looking at DVD selection alone (read: they have decent movies out for Blu-Ray), Blu-Ray doesn't seem as ultimately doomed as it did just a few months back, but the PS3's disappointing sales are going to hurt its adoption longterm. 2/27/2007 10:26:48 AM |

What is the best blue ray player? should i just snag a ps3 and replace it when it craps out on me? 2/27/2007 11:21:14 AM |

The PS3 is the best blu-ray player in its price range.
Even though it doesn't upconvert regular DVDs, it does a fine job of displaying them in 480p (entirely subjective). Upconversion of DVDs has been promised via firmware upgrade (possibly march 23rd).
My only gripe with the PS3 as BD player is that you have to use the controller or Sony BD Remote. Universal remotes will not work since the remote uses Bluetooth. Hopefully someone comes out with an IR-->BT USB adapter so i can use my Harmony.
It will not crap out on you, it's a well made machine and there have been very few reports of PS3s crapping out (unlike the 360).

^^ Depends what you are looking for in your player.
As far as I know the PS3 is the only Blu-Ray player that currently supports HDMI 1.3. The only advantage that I know of right now to buying a stand alone, more expensive Blu-Ray player is that they can upconvert DVDs. However, Sony has stated they will be adding this functionality to the PS3 in the future.
For the price I would go with a PS3 if you don't need upconverting right now since you will get the additional ability of games/music/web.

the xbox 360 also upconverts with the vga adapter so i do not need that with dvds.

^^^ Not console warring here. Just stating that the PS3 had lots of units overheat (though admittedly probably due to user caused situations). Oh yeah and everything I stated was based of off articles I've read and trends with sony at large. I personally don't give a rats ass which wins since I'm not paying $30 for a $10 movie .
Nor am I paying $500 for a system that only plays video games. 2/27/2007 1:56:12 PM |

I've read about issues with both consoles i'm not stepping on 1 side or another... anyway a real gamer would have both regardless because the best games for each system are only released for that system. Halo, Grantourismo, Gears of war, grand theft auto(sure they get released later on everything but no initially)
i just don't want to buy a $600 brick

FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
you get automatic doubling of the warranty if you buy with MOST credit cards. So in this case you'd be covered for 2 years.
I usually make purchases like these with my AmEx, their customer service is the best. The process is easy provided you've got your receipt. Sometimes they dont even ask you to send the defective product back to them, they just replace it (unlikely with such a high dolla item.)
It does not mess w/ your credit at all.
But I'm telling you, your PS3 will not brick on you. Hell, it hasn't even glitched on me yet, and I've def put mine through its paces. AND it was a launch system.

It should all be designed to withstand a fairly high case temperature. The heat sink inside the PS3 looks to be sufficient.
I'm sure its not, because American consumers refuse to pay for properly designed equipment. Dealing with a console that dies in a year is "ok" though.2/27/2007 6:27:57 PM |

Wow. Yeah, you got me beat. Like I said, I hoped the BC would pick up my games - I only really wanted a 360 to keep my x-box games alive. As it turned out the BC only created the false hope until the x-box was no longer available on store shelves (factory sealed at least). 2/28/2007 9:54:24 AM |

So instead of going out and getting another xbox for $100, you spent $400 on a 360 just to play 5 year old games?
That doesn't seem smart at all. 2/28/2007 9:57:21 AM |
jbtilley All American 12797 Posts user info edit post |
No, I went out and got a used x-box to replace the old one. I would have preferred a new one but most online places have those at $300. I wish I had just bought one a year ago when you could still pick up new ones on the cheap in stores.
The original plan before the x-box broke was to ride out on the x-box until a 360 price drop, continue to play my 5 year old games as I slowly weaned myself to next gen games. 2/28/2007 10:07:22 AM |

i would be nuts for bluray if it weren't for the fact that it's sony...EVERYONE knows sony hates its customers (i'd seriously like to see some proof to the contrary)...as someone who still owns a "regular" TV, who is more than happy with his DVD player and 5.1 surround, i couldn't care less about the "quality" (as what i've seen is not even remotely close to being worth the price)...however, the very fact that bluray holds more data keeps me interested (though i'd really like to see actual numbers comparing the cost of bluray - players, burners, and media - versus HD) 3/20/2007 12:56:13 PM |
