^^Never went to the Temple, so I never got one. Although I know had I gone, I would have gotten the same name as every other male who went that week.

^no idea.

^ well in that case, how do they pick the names, are they 'normal' or Pope-like names, do you even get to know what other Mormons "Names" are or is it just they who know?

I take it you don't get to pick, why would they name everyone in a group the same name... seems kind of unoriginal.

If I ever tithed 10% of my income, I want to be called "John Paul III" or "Innocent XIV" or something.

you get biblical names. When you get married, your wife tells you her name, but you don't tell her yours.

^^Because I don't believe in god and I know too much about the church's history. Especially the shit they claim didn't happened, considering that I had family intimately invovled with those actions and I have read their personal accounts of it.

so i may have missed it, sorry if its already been addressed.

what, exactly, is the purpose of the magic underwear? i mean, what does it do? like some symbolic shield against voodoo?

when and how often do you wear it?

does it need to be washed in a special way?

what if you soil them in an unexpected way? poop-farts, ejaculation, etc...

what do the average Mormons think about it. do they get all goose-bumpy and feel honored to have the god-given privilege of wearing their magic underwear? or is it kind of a sexy-tough-cool thing, like when you were a kid wearing your Aquaman Underoos? or do they just mostly go and think "what a stupid ritual?"

Joseph Smith went out like a fucking gangster. lol

from wikipedia

A few disaffected Mormons in Nauvoo joined together to publish a newspaper, the Nauvoo Expositor. Its first and only issue was published 7 June 1844. The paper was highly antagonistic toward Smith, expounding many beliefs critical of him, and outlining several grievances against him. The bulk of the Expositor's single issue was devoted to criticism of Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement and the mayor of Nauvoo, and inflamed many of Nauvoo's citizens. The city council, headed by Joseph Smith as mayor, responded by passing an ordinance declaring the newspaper a public nuisance designed to promote violence against Smith and his followers.[14] Under the council's new ordinance, Nauvoo's mayor, Smith, in conjunction with the city council, ordered the city marshal to destroy the paper and the press on June 10, 1844.[15]

This action was seen by many non-Mormons as illegal and Smith was accused of violating the freedom of the press. Violent threats were made against Smith and the Mormon community. Charges were brought against Smith and he submitted to incarceration in Carthage, the Hancock County seat. Smith's brother, Hyrum, and eight of his associates including John Taylor and Willard Richards, accompanied him to the jail.[16] The Governor of the state, Thomas Ford, had promised protection and a fair trial.[17] All of Smith's associates left the jail, except his brother Hyrum, Richards and Taylor. Those in jail were not held in the 1st floor jail cell because the jailer felt that that was unsafe, instead, they were held in the jailer's room on the 2nd floor.

Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on 27 June 1844, a mob of about 200 men stormed the jail, and went to where Smith and his associates were imprisoned. Although they attempted to hold the door shut against the mob, the mob opened fire through the still-closed door, shooting Hyrum Smith in the face. As the mob burst through the doorway, Joseph Smith (who had earlier been given a six-shooter by a visitor) managed to fire three shots at the mob.[18] His brother Hyrum Smith died immediately from the shot in the face. Taylor was shot several times, but survived. One of the bullets hit his pocket watch, saving his life. Richards was unharmed. Smith ran to the open window, where he was shot multiple times simultaneously, and fell from the window, dead. Upon falling to the ground, he was shot several more times. Mormons view his death as martyrdom.

Smith and his brother were both interred below the Smith Homestead in Nauvoo, and later excavations ordered by his grandson Frederick M. Smith rediscovered the bodies, and along with his wife's, were reinterred in a location thought to be more safe from Mississippi flooding.

^That fails to mention that when he died he made the masons cry for help.

^^originally, garmets were a sign that someone was a polygamists. now it is just a sign that you have received your endowments. many mormons attach weird magical powers to them.

Are there varying degrees of devotion for Mormons? For instance is it an all or nothing type of deal? How does the church look on dating/marrying someone who is not Mormon? Thanks

is "blood atonement" still a tenent of faith

what about the idea of stealing from the gentiles being okay with god?

do you see mormonism as a violent and abusive religion (many cases of fundamentalist child abuse and killings i.e. elizabeth smart, lafferty brothers), but also in the mainstream LDS with spousal/child abuse? seems to me that obedience is a very high virtue and disobedience punished in extreme ways

Blood Atonement is no longer part of mainstream moism, but many of the splinter sects, such as FLDS believe in it.

I do not know about the stealing from gentiles concept.

I wouldn't say Mormonism is anymore abusive or violent than other religions. The problem is that leadership is supposed to be unquestioned. What they say is golden. So in many senses, Mormonism leads to sever mental abuse. The Mountain Meadows Massacre is evidence of this mentality. Normal cognitive individuals would have questioned the slaughter of individuals, but because they had been programed to be unquestioning they were easily brought into doing it.

As for child and spousal abuse, I haven't looked at the statistics lately, but instances of abuse in Mormon households is on par with everyone else.

do you guys really believe each star in the sky represents an unsaved soul and that's why Mormon wives have to product so many offspring so those unsaved souls have a body to inhabit until that body goes through all the rites and then the body and the soul gets to go to everlasting heaven?
