I was just in NYC over the long weekend and found it hilarious that all the New Yorkers were complaining about how cold it was. Apparently it never gets that cold there. I'm not sure I believe that but whatever, I stayed toasty.

^^dude its not Minnesota, how fucking cold do you think it should be to start complaining? Not to mention everyone walks around up there, instead of cruising around in a heated car.

I might be taking my Japanese friend to NYC. He's a bar owner and wants to see some cool bars of the sports variety. Last time I went drinking in New York was 2003 so I have no idea where to take him Any suggestions?

Ask MajrShorty, I filled her in on all the good places

Brother Jimmy's is great. Over time you'll come to hate WFU their fans show up in large numbers and can be pretty annoying.

I've got a few more of my own to add, too Still a noob tho so I'm sure others have great suggestions.

Midtown? What's your definition of "mid-town". Down the Hatch is on West 4th Street!

Great place if you show up early. Very small place and gets way too crowded. The Slaughtered Lamb across the street is a nice place though. Has a British pub feel to it.

has anyone seen God of Carnage http://www.godofcarnage.com/ - might try to get tickets to one of the weekend shows - slightly more expensive than i'm typically willing to pay for a show but i love the cast

I know this thread was originally for fun things to do, but can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel in NYC for less than $160 a night? We're trying to be close to any of the following: Time Square, Chinatown, Little Italy.

The hubby and I are going to be in NYC from July 28-August 1st.

^^^always check hotels.com. this summer, my family found a deal at the helmsley on 42nd st (near grand central) for less than $200/night. (hotels.com was having a 20% off sale) also, don't be set on one location - times square gets old fast, imo.

Cool. Thanks. I had already been checking hotels.com and booked The Roosevelt Hotel through them last night. (Book 4 nights, get 30% off)... So we got The Roosevelt for $139 a night + tax. Queen bed.

Now I just need to read this thread and figure out what to do while we're there.

Plane tickets and hotel are already paid. Sweet.

I live near Albany and went to NYC for the first time a few days ago. I think I would rather eat a bag of shit then ever go back to that city again. It might be for some people, but definitely not for me.

^washington square? there's some awesome food around there. the west village is a 'hip' place to be.

my brother is a chef/line cook/works at centro vinoteca, really delicious pasta and entrees, appetizers, everything.

Lots of stuff in that area but not sure which cafes are good. Just walk down MacDougal, Bleeker, Thompson St.

Mamoun's Falafel at 119 MacDougal St is a great late night hunger fix for after show. Beware of the hot sauce... seriously.

mmm yeah i need to check out some of the falafel spots in the west village. mamoun's and another one are my bro's favorites - and our dad is palestinian so we're used to damn good falafel. (we still can't find anything that beats dad's, but that's how it is.)

but seriously, that area has a ton going on. you can always check out yelp, but i'd probably just wonder around a bit and see what looks good.

well i'm only up here now for 2 more weeks counting this one - hitting all of my favorite spots as well as some new ones - throw out some recommendations of places that i have to go before i leave - preferably between 45th and 55th st and 6th and 10th ave for dinner and anywhere near city hall for lunch - would like to keep lunch under $20 and dinner under $60 for 1

probably going to do ben benson's for dinner tomorrow night or next week because i've heard great things about the steak there

Ok, so my cousin is flying into NYC in 2 weeks and i'm driving up there to pick her up with a bunch of friends. This is her first trip to the United States and I want to show her a good time. I know of a lot of the family oriented things to do in NYC since i've been there a bunch but I don't know much or anything about the night life. She also mentioned she may want to rent a limo for a night and go clubbing and stuff. Any tips ideas places to go etc?

Howdy! That's awesome!!

We're taking Jet Blue - Super cheap tickets. We're flying in to Rochester first to meet a lot of his family and then flying in to JFK and then back to RDU.

I think for all six tickets - $550 on Jet Blue including everything which is super great.

We're also staying at the Roosevelt which we got for $139 a night and it's now up to $239 a night (our room) at hotels.com

Thanks for the Italian restaurant link!! Please let me know of any other awesome places!

It feels like its been raining forever - but I'm not going to complain about the temps. This is way better than only having 2 weeks of spring.

nothing is worse than waiting 15 minutes in the fulton st station soaking entirely through 3 shirts before the train finally shows up.

my list of fun places (calling TKE-Teg, who has tons more)

- Comedy Club
- Top of the Rock (better for views than the empire state building)
- Trailer Park (GREAT for "knock you on your ass" happy hour margarita pitchers, as well as good burgers and tater tots with TONS of trashy kitsch for atmosphere)
- Florencia 13 - big burritos, bigger margaritas, modest prices and a pretty cool atmosphere
- Holy Basil for thai food
- Haveli for indian food
- If you're into soccer, Nevada Smith's is great for catching a game
- Central Park (duh)
- take one of the numerous water taxis for views of the island from the river(s)
- Staten Island ferry for ellis island and statue of liberty views
- go see the huge testicles on the bull down near wall st (seriously, they're big and you can tell where people rub them, quite numerous)
- Rockefeller center is cool, even in the summer
- go on a sunset cruise, tons are around so check them out

I've got a (slightly) longer list of bars which mean no cover and no stupid $50 drinks. Others have provided great suggestions, too.

BTW - goes without saying but NYC can get HOT. Subways especially. Bring CASH (not all places take cards here... I always ask) and make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and drink some water. Nothing worse than a sweaty fainting person on the subway in the summer. Or city streets in the summer. Or fainting person anytime. Especially in the summer.
