Getting a refurb unit doesn't increase sales. Besides, people must really like the console if they will continue to buy it despite hardware issues.

^I know, it's called sarcasm. And yes, the fact that these people have been taking it in the ass from Microsoft and just smiling and asking for more speaks volumes to the quality of the 360's library and gaming experience.

Its the only valid beef about the 360 (fail rate). Although it is getting better and soon won't be an issue. I personally think if it wasn't an issue, the 360 would be selling like freaking hotcakes. It's doing well, but I mean like sheer hotcakes. And I have a feeling come the time towards the end of the year from the Elites and the new Falcon chipsets, they'll do just that. But up until now, the hardware failures have been a big fucking problem for MS. Not for me, mine still runs fine, but im lucky. Watch me go home and load up COD4 mp and shit out.

But yes, the gaming library + xbox live cannot be fucked with and I'd gladly buy two 360's than not have one. So yeah, I've got their cock in my bum and I've accepted that and moved on. I've had too much fun as both a singular user, my fiancee being involved with live arcade, and my friends on mutliplayer and xbox live with absolute hilarity and fun have occured, and achievements and universal scoreboards FTW, including media streaming, to pretty much say balls to any cost or inconvenience.

That's dedication, and most 360 owners are like that - insane shit like putting up with 5 failures or more becuase they play the damn thing every second.

Waggle won't make an awful game good (like Red Steel). The problem with a lot of developers is that instead of building a game to really take advantage of the controller, they take a game and just stick some Wiimote functions on. Also, the fact that the Wii is only somewhat more powerful than the Gamecube and XBox invites a lot of developers to just be extremely lazy with the graphics and release games that would have looked average on the PS2.

But hopefully developers will take a cue from Metroid Prime 3. It's an excellent game. The controls are fantastic (better aiming than dual stick, and the motion functions are fun too), and the graphics are also gorgeous - not as technically impressive as a 360, but full of amazing detail and visual design. The Wii is still mainly a party system, but it will get a few more "gamer's games" by the end of the year. MP3 came out recently, Mario Galaxy looks good, Fire Emblem and Battalion Wars 2 are lesser-known titles that will probably be good, and of course there's Smash Brothers. These are all first-party though, so lack of third-party support does remain

Also, while Bioshock outsold MP3, the fact that it was out for a week and a half while MP3 had three days before the statistics were finalized probably has something to do with it. I'm not sure if MP3 would have sold more if they had an equal amount of time, but it would have been a lot closer.

Pokemon was late April, but given how well Pokemon sold there's no way it wasn't Pokemon related.

Quote :
"It went on within five days of sales to sell one million copies.[5] As of the end of May 2007, Pokémon Diamond sold the most units of any video game for the year, with Pokémon Pearl coming in fourth.[6] The games' launch in Europe met similar success, racking up sales of over one million in Europe in its first five days of availability.[citation needed] Together they have sold 8.76 million units worldwide as of the end of June 2007.[7]"

All necks snapped, all serious gamers owned.

It's arguably the most complex game on the market today.

Breeding for IVs is a bitch and there's no good way to calculate them at very low levels

PSP passes DS in Japan for weekly sales.

Xbox 360: 1243
Game Boy Advance SP: 836
Nintendo GameCube: 97

I'm not going to pick up either the PSP or the DS, but I really can't wait to see the next generation of the handhelds. Should be pretty damn interesting just how many features the cram into the next batch.

http://www.stat.go.jp/English/data/handbook/c02cont.htm

There are ~127.7 million people in Japan.
About 20.8 percent of that population is over 65, so we'll just exclude them since there's virtually no way they're buying a video game console.
According to the charts, 13.6% of the population is between 0 - 14 years old. We'll call it 10% though, since who knows -- 13 year olds might have a hankering for buying some video game consoles.

This leaves us, effectively, with 69.2% of the populace. A little over 88 million people between the ages of about 13 and 64. Also keep in mind that in Japan skews old and has a ton of baby boomers, most of whom would be just below this 65 year old cut-off.

As of June, there were 18.11 million Nintendo DS sold in Japan. Probably safe to say about 100,000 a month since then too, so we'll go with 18.31 million.

Divide these numbers out and you get to having 1 in every 4.8 Japanese people owning a DS.

So yes, sales are going to dry up because everyone in the country owns a DS and they're running out of people to buy them.

Who cares if it out sold the DS or not? The fact is, it's the first handheld since, well ever, to put a significant dent in Nintendo's dominance of that market. Especially when you consider it's lackluster early sales and lack of games (hmmmm, sound familiar) it's done incredibly well. It's carved out ~40% of the handheld market and is the only console to consistently increase it's sales figures on a month by month basis.

Let's face it, the DS/DS Lite have sold at an unprecedented pace, really nothing at all in the history of video gaming consumer electronics even compares to it. Basically every sales figure for the past 20 years pales in comparison to the kind of number the DS and it's games have been putting up, which in the face of that makes the PSP's performance even more impressive. Good show by Sony for their first attempt, and if they can beat Nintendo to the market with the next gen handheld, expect at least a 50/50 split between Nintendo and Sony going into that contest.

shrike, im curious...honestl question here. Do you own any game system besides Sony systems? Like, is your only platforms a PS3 and PSP?

You are too knowledgeable and into video games to be limited to one company's offerings, so if that's true it's really surprising. If it is true, why not have other consoles as there are plenty to offer?

Eh? I don't own a PSP. I own a PS3, Wii, and a DS. I've never bought a Sony system at retail before this gen. Previous to this I had a Nintendo 64 and a Gamecube. I'm primarily a PC gamer, I think we've been over this before. I bought a PS3 because it offers games I can't play on my PC, unlike the 360.

one console has very few quality games but seems reliable enough

another console has a good amount of quality games but is always broken

and yet another console is a repackaged last-gen console with a magic wand controller (great for Harry Potter i bet!!!1)

no-win situation

bigman my xbox has been rock solid since day one. tired excuse. i know many haven't, but ill take a a couple of broken xbox's (all covered and now being fixed with .65 nm chips) with a fantastic library and great online support over my ps3, which has so far been relegated to just a 'nice dvd player' any day.

and ok shrike, i was just wondering. the PSP sells well becuase it can homebrew, case closed. And that's fine if you ask me, thats why I've got one. But the DS can't be fucked with becuase it's really the best handheld and a must own if you are into games on the go. The wii on the other hand is up to debate....it along with my ps3 get maybe 8% of my console time with the 92% going to the 360. Other than that I play the shit out of tf2 on PC

^ You honestly believe that the majority of people that buy a PSP buy it for homebrew? Dude, YOU are the fanboy. And I don't want to hear your fucking "I own a PS3 so I can't be a fanboy" excuse because its bullshit.

I don't own a PSP, but I have a DS and I homebrew the hell out of it. I might argue that the ds homebrew scene is bigger than the psp. So don't go spouting that stupid shit.

god damn dude, take a valium. If the "fanboy alarm" is going off, it's your internet stormtrooper ass that's ringing it with your YEEEEE SONY! super pissed-off posts. lol.

I like both PSP and DS so I don't give a p00 how the sales stack up, in fact I have almost every platform of this generation of gaming so I doubly don't care. But you are ignorant if you don't think PSP homebrew/modded firmware to play roms isn't fucking huge, b/c it is. Everyone I know of that has one has it for that reason, and not the shitty PS2 games that take years to load. I know there's a couple of good ones and the quality is getting better (finally) so there's that. And what's wrong with homebrew anyway? I love that about the PSP. DS homebrew is limited, some good stuff, but not the same.

^ So don't be so defensive, and I will stand by my point. Of course I think homebrew is HUGE on the PSP, but I sure as hell don't think that it is selling well "case closed." That is a totally ignorant statement. I mean serious, does anyone else believe that?

I would guess that less than 20% of the people with PSPs hack it out. I would think that there are more people homebrewing the DS, simply because of the shear numbers of them out there, but I have no evidence to that.

Man, you are so damn defensive. it doesn't make me a fanboy for telling you that you're a fucking idiot for making such a stupid statement. I don't even see how that even defends Sony at all. I still have no interest in buying one, and to me that should be how it is with everyone and get rid of this stupid fanboy shit. Fucking get what you want, don't get what you don't want, who gives a shit?

Anyway, I love my DS, but I mostly just play NES games on it with homebrew. The DS just doesn't come out with enough awesome titles. Not sure if I can handle the new Zelda being all touch screen...
