I disagree. I went pot luck down here at Univ. of New Orleans, and all three of my suitemates were epic strikeouts. Between work and school, I was hardly ever in the apartment, and I still didn't like any of them. They let dishes pile sky high (I pretty much never ate at the apartment, and the two who did the most left EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND), dirtied my trash can with their coffee grinds and never took it out, overpacked the freezer with shit they didn't eat, never filled the fridge, never seemed to have the money to pay for the cable they wanted so badly, kept the thermostat on fucking 60 degrees in December...

I'll repeat what I said in Study Hall.

Quote :
"Work as hard as you can to get high grades your first year here (really easy to do, since all of your classes the first year are easy enough, and most likely a review of what you've already seen in high school). This will start you off with a very high GPA. Afterward, do what you can to maintain that GPA. It's much easier to start off with a fantastic GPA and then keep it from slipping down than it is to start off with a shitty GPA and try to ratchet it back up.

If you plan on having any sort of fun or going to lots of parties and stuff, do it while you're a freshman or sophomore. By about your junior year (not always, but definitely by your senior year), you'll be too busy and will probably be spending many a night cramming at the library or doing something along those lines. Have fun and make friends while the workload isn't suffocating.

To add to the above, don't be a cave troll. Get to know your suite/dorm/hallway/whatever mates. Take the time to get to know some of the people in your classes, especially the people who will be in the same classes as you throughout your major. You're all in the same boat, so it's nice to get to know one another and to have people with whom you can relate and sympathize.

I'm still a virgin at 24 and I don't know the first thing about getting women, so don't look for any advice like that here. In fact, I'll tell you the exact opposite; don't bother worrying about it. Don't let the prospect of getting some ass distract you from your studies or other goals in life. Don't worry about what everybody else is doing, focus only on what you have to do to get through your college career successfully. If the only thing you're worried about in college is getting laid, you've come to college for all the wrong reasons...

FIND YOURSELF AN INTERNSHIP OR A CO-OP AS SOON AS YOU CAN. Don't focus on graduating within 4-5 years, the only purpose of school is for you to learn the basic theory and jargon for your field. I discovered all too late that employers don't give two shits about whether or not you have a college degree (I'm not saying you don't need a college degree, I'm saying that they basically expect you to have one. Don't make the mistake I did and think that a college degree somehow makes you special when interviewing for a job). It's not necessarily how much you know, it's what relevant experience you have. Internships and co-ops are your best friend in this regard. Take your time working for an actual company; you'll learn a lot of useful things that you won't learn in a university, like what the latest and most relevant tools are in your field.

If you're eating on campus, eat at Clark. It's cafeteria food, but compared to Fountain it's great cafeteria food. The Wolf Den also has acceptable good eats. If you want something off campus, Cookout is always pretty good.

Under no circumstances should you ever do ~20 shots of vodka in the span of 2 hours or less. Drinking and getting drunk is overrated anyway. If you're doing something that necessitates that you must get drunk afterward to relax, you're doing something wrong imo.

...

If you decide you don't like your major, don't be afraid to switch. I decided that I hated my first major, but I didn't realize it (or perhaps I didn't admit it to myself) until I had about a semester or two left, so I decided that there was no point in switching so close to the end. I really should have, as doing another major sooner would have saved me several headaches. You don't have to be completely in love with what you're doing, but if you start to think that it isn't for you, don't just sit it out and wait for it all to blow over. Find out what else interests you enough to earn a degree in and go for it. Just don't pussy out completely and go into CHASS.
"

Grade distribution reports are crucial.
http://www-records.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/grddist.pl

Pick your classes then use the distribution reports to pick the teachers that you want to have.

Avoid any teacher who gives out an unusual number of low grades. They may be a bad teacher, they may not speak English very well, they may just be way too hard, or there may be some other factors. Either way, you don't want to be in their class.

The teachers who give the best grades are either better teachers or they are easier. Your GPA will thank you for taking their classes.

Why the fuck does page one advise guys to get bow ties?

what the fucking shit?

real college advice:

go to class
read the books
take classes that interest you so that going to class and reading the books are actually fun

if you're going to drink during the week sometimes you have to take friday or saturday to do school work - its a reasonable tradeoff... unless of course you want to fail and waste your parents money

the police are not your friends - they aren't trying to protect you

I'll just re-post here what I posted in my redundant thread:

Don't dress like you're going to a night club, you'll just look foolish, or be thought a whore.
Drop any snotty attitude you may have had in high school. If you single out the dorks and start picking on them, no one will like you or respect you.
Some people are paying their own money to be in class. Don't create disruptions.
Budget your time wisely between socializing and school work. Too much of either will leave you with regrets.
It's a huge campus full of widely different people, so don't worry about being "cool" or "fitting in". No one cares if you sit alone at lunch. Rush fraternities/sororities if that's your bag, but you needn't depend on them for a social life.
If you want a girlfriend, the first week is your only chance. The rare singles get snapped up quick.
Raleigh is a major city that extends far beyond Hillsborough Street, so go explore it.
You might be able to get away with parking in Cameron Village and walking or taking the CAT bus to campus. Just don't park in the same area every day.
Don't walk around campus late at night with fewer than 2 companions, especially in isolated or unlit areas. Like I said, it's a major city, with big-city crime.
Don't give money to the bums, it only encourages them to hang around longer.
Be mindful of the local "nuisance party" law. Nothing ruins a party like grandma across the street calling the fuzz.
Search for similar threads on TWW before posting one that may be redundant.

Seriously.
You're going to see the same bums for the next four years.

Some people take far too long to catch on to the fact that they are lying to your fucking face. They don't want to get off the streets. They don't need to buy food. Their car is not broken down a block away with their pregnant wife in the passenger seat. They did not come here from Wilmington to do a job and then get left behind by their construction crew. Their momma in Greensboro did not die and they do not need $15 for gas to get there.

It sucks that these career bums ruin it for people who run into a legitimate need.

1. Meredith and Peace girls are bad news, stay far away. NC State girls are much more down to earth.

2. Get involved and make friends. College is what you make it.

3. GPA doesn't matter, but staying in school does. I would advise staying above a 3.0.

4. If you were home-schooled for hs, you will need to be socialized. Just like a puppy.

5. You have to exercise or you will get fat. Pizza every night is different from mom's healthy meals.

Familiarize yourself with the locations of quiet, low-traffic restrooms for pooping. These do not include the main floor of DH Hill or any restroom in Harrelson.

Meredith girls are looking for rich husbands to marry immediately after graduating so that they don't have to find jobs with their useless degrees.

Don't worry too much about dating or sex. You have many, many years ahead of you for that.

Please don't turn into a whiny hippie protester. Go smoke some more weed instead of obstructing the brickyard with your demonstrations that no one cares about.

For the love of God don't listen to the idiots telling you to take more than 4 years here.

If you are competent, you can finish in 4 years with plenty of experience, and will probably look better than the guy who accomplished the exact same thing in 5 years.

Most of the advice in this thread... I hope you're not hopeless enough to need it.

--
Another little tip (for those who are not pathetic failures), show up to a seminar or two in your department. Really, you'll probably get free food, and just showing your face there will have greater long term effects than you can currently foresee. No joke.

But that depends on the size of the dept. a little.

- Don't walk down the middle of the fucking street.

- If you go to the library, clean up after yourself. No one wants to deal with your crumpled pieces of paper and half-empty water bottles.

Get to know your profs, especially the ones in your department. Offer to help them with stuff such as a project, research, etc. Odds are pretty good that they will have something you can do. It also helps you build repoire (sp?) with them, and they may have connections or can give you a good letter of recommendation. You'll also be showing them that you're interested, they'll get to know you better, etc. At a bare bones minimum, hit up their office hours and ask questions about the material. The more they get to know your face, the better of a resource they can become to you.

freshman guys, find an older girl and become a friend with her. its gonna be tough, but, its time to become a salesman, cause you in college now. study with her, ask her advice about school, class and hangouts. become a confidant.

but, dont be aggressive or show any pressure in a relationship and dont stalk her. cause the older girl aint gonna be looking for a relationship with a younger guy.

after a couple of months of doing this and earning her trust, she'll take you to a party with her friends. you sit back and she'll get drunk and cry on your shoulder about a guy at the party that she likes who doesnt give a damn about her.

take her home and bang the hell out of her. she aint lookin for a younger guy for a relationship. but, she's lookin for somebody to teach and practice with.

an older girl is gonna teach you a bunch of things you didnt see or know about in high school. then, when you are an upperclassman and know tricks, the young girls love ya

freshman girls, go ahead and hook up with an upperclassman and get it over with

most kids reading this are going to think college is an orgy

hah.

Freshmen: prepare to watch other people get laid for 4 years. you'll get desperate and hook up with a fatty or two, but overall, it's going to suck. Not at all what you thought it would be. You'll never use the words "cunt," "bitch," "slut," and "whore" more than you will over the next 4 years. They all have the same definition: chicks that are sleeping with someone other than you.

enjoy it if you're one of the lucky ones, but don't get her knocked up, and for god's sakes don't abuse the shit out of her so she has issues for the rest of her life.

-GO TO CLASS. This means at least try to stay awake. You'll be glad you did, or at the very least you'll remember when the tests are.

-Get some sleep, but don't overdo it. Four hours per night is a good minimum--don't do what I did and try to use 4 hours as your "regular" amount. You'll end up sleeping in or through classes. Conversely, if you're getting 8 hours per night, you're probably missing out on some fun.

-The Campus Cinema is a good place to catch a movie. Comfy seats, cheap cheap ($1.50 admission, reasonably priced drinks/candy), and you don't have to get in your car to go there.

-If you need a job, get one on campus. Makes it much easier to get there, oftentimes they're easier to work with on schedules and making it fit around your academics, plus you'll meet people that could come in handy down the road. I started working on campus the summer after my freshman year, which led to my first full-time job after graduation, as well as subsequent positions.

-Don't be a slut. (This applies to guys too) Also, be sure to wrap up. An STD is no way to start college (or finish).

-Just because someone sleeps with you doesn't mean they have feelings for you. A corollary to this is that, if you're looking for a relationship, it's probably *not* a good idea to sleep with that person immediately.

-Clark Hall and David Clark Labs are NOT the same building; in fact, they're on opposite sides of campus. Also, watch your abbreviations, especially in the W's. Withers==WI, Williams==WMS, Winston==WN, Weaver==DSW

-Leave yourself some extra time when taking the wolfline. If a bus is full, it will go past without stopping.

If you're a moron who parked in the Coliseum Deck today without a valid permit, congrats you have a ticket. There's a "traffic controller" at every entrance of the deck today watching permits come in and there's about 4 walking the deck writing tickets.

If your dorm is a normal hall, not suites, leave your door open whenever you're going to be in the room and not trying to focus on studying. Prop it open if you have to. My freshman year most people on my hall did this, and it was great, we all got to know each other fairly well and became a fairly good group. Sophomore year it stopped happening as much, especially with the incoming freshmen, so the fun dropped off a lot. At least until I started drinking.

Which brings me to my next point. Let's face it, alcohol is delicious. But at some point, after you've been drunk a few times, you need to take a step back and ask yourself what kind of drunk you really are.

Are you belligerent? Are you depressed? Why on earth are you so desperate to be either one of those things? All you're doing is ruining the party and building a reputation for yourself that you don't want. If you can't get drunk without starting a fight, crying, sexually harassing women in front of their large, angry boyfriend...I don't know, try marijuana or something. But I know this, nobody likes a shitty drunk.

If, however, you are a fun drunk, God has smiled upon you and will continue to do so in the future.

Really mean? Like you're gonna remember the face of some random guy on the bus or in class who gave up his seat and talk about it to any other female? Unless you're being polite to a girl who already knows you pretty well, the "points" are pretty useless.
