OBLIGATORY REPOST FOR PAGE 5!

It sounds SOOOO much better than my old kit. I've got Evans Genera II coated heads on there and they sound GREAT at any volume. It helps that my buddy who sold them to me did a pretty decent tune job too.

Upgraded from my old Tama Rockstar Custom to this...

Tama Starclassic Performer (birch/bubinga) in orange sparkle with black chrome hardware.
22" bass, 12" rack tom, 14" and 16" floor toms, 14"x5.5" snare.

I am so fucking excited.

My last few sets of heads have been clear (Aquarian Perf 2 and Evans Hydraulics) and I liked them, but I had planned on getting coateds next. This set just happened to come with Evans G2's and I love them. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with coated for a bit. They sound incredible on the birch/bubinga, better than they would have on my old mahogany Rockstar Customs.

^ Cool. I can see that. It certainly varies, and it obviously depends on what kind of sound you're going for and what type of music you're playing.

I use a coated head on the snare (usually Ambassador) and on the toms I go with clear (usually Pinstripe). This is for heavy pop to heavy rock music.

And I tried Aquarian a couple of times, but I just didn't care for them. One snare head I had busted on the very first song--it was probably just a bad head, though, and not indicative of Aquarian's general quality. But those kind of equipment failures stick with you.

Yeah, they do, which is why I'll never use Remo weatherking ebony ever again.

The Aquarian Performance II's that I had were beasts. The muffling ring on the outside (and low tuning) made for a very dead sound with almost no overtone, which was good when playing alone and loud in my dining room.

I think I play a little bit differently now, usually (not always ) opting for the "less is more" approach I guess. Not so many long tom fills as much as accents. More Gadd than Bonham as my inspiration these days.

(of course you should temper your expectations when imagining me compared to either of them)

^ Nothing wrong with that. I think many of us wanted to be Bonham at some point--but I don't know any drummers who aren't Steve Gadd fans.

I've always liked this improv piece with Gadd and Stanley Clarke:

Not too difficult, but being able to play it and being able to use it are two different things.

If I had a goal it would be to be less sloppy. Better timing, less rim hits, less accidental cymbal hits, etc. Oh, and to pick up the slack on my double bass. There is no reason for a person who has had a double bass pedal for over a decade to be as bad as I am at it.

^^i am not very good with my double pedal. i have a lot of trouble with quintuples, but i am good with triplets. i may need to adjust the pedal some to get a better response. i really havent adjusted much of it since i got the dw9000. its a badass pedal tho.

I know a lot of it is the mix, but I want my snare to sound like this.

I read Aaron Harris plays with a 6.5x14 Tama handhammered bronze snare. I obviously cannot afford one of those, but do any of you have any tips on helping me tune my 6x14 birch Starclassic snare to sound remotely like that?

Cutting some snares? Coated bottom head? Taping a few snare wires down?

Whatcha got? I've never been as good at tuning as I wish I was. I could only tune marching tenors back in the day.

^damn. i cant click on youtube at work, so its hard for me to know exactly what type of sound you're looking for. personally, the tighter the better for me (yea yea... ). I basically take the snare side head and crank it. Then i tighten up the snare throw-off. Usually keep it so that the snares can still be fairly loose, so that they can resonate freely, yet tight enough so that they don't sound like shit. (i think most drummers know when the snares sound like shit) when you get to the tightness that its not messy/muddled sounding when you hit it, tighten it up just a smidgen more and they will stay there and you wont have to mess with it.

I don't like any method that involves taping the snares. You shouldn't have to do that if the snare side head & snares are tensioned properly. Plus, I love throwing the snares off every now and then when i really want to work around the kit for solos. I love turning the snare into a extra tom.

I haven't got to mess with it yet.

I actually have a 13x6 DW snare shell (naked, no finish or wrap) and white hardware (hoops, snare hardware, no lugs) that I've been meaning to assemble. DW are dicks about selling lugs, so I'm looking elsewhere.

I don't plan on doing anything to the shell, I'm just going to leave it unfinished. I'm thinking some brass single sided tube lugs would look great with the unfinished wood and white hoops, I just have to get around to ordering them.

Any suggestions?

I played brass for 8 years or so and then gave up playing when I got to state. I've been real interested to pick up playing again, but I'd like to try drumming as it only hinges on my coordination and not my face I just don't know where to start besides a practice pad and rudiment book. someone wanna teach me?

So, I'm sick of trying to explain what I want for drum parts on demos to someone who can play (and also needing them to be around, since I tend to do my recording at 3 AM). I can't drum very well, but I also can't practice because I don't have a kit.

What's the best way to get a kit together for not too much cash? I don't need anything fancy, just kick/snare/floor tom and hi-hat/crash/ride, and I'm not sure I even need all that. Are there budget kits that aren't a total waste, or should I try to piece stuff together from craigslist?

I'd go used from Craigslist for the drums. You might want to try a WTB ad. I bought some Tama Rockstar drums in great condition for $125 after posting a WTB ad. Cleaned them up and flipped them for about $350. Even at $350 they were way better than any of the budget kits out there.

If you post up your budget we could keep an eye out for a good deal.

If you want to piece one together you could do so, but it would take a while. I sold a Tama bass drum for about $60 a while back. I saw a Pearl Piccolo snare for $50 today. Start finding misc pieces like that and you could end up with what you're looking for pretty cheap.

Yeah, piecing it together could be cheap if you don't care about quality.

Any idea on how much you're willing to spend? The cymbals are the more expensive part. You can get away with shitty drums and decent cymbals. If you cut corners on cymbals, even if you're playing a Pearl Reference, your kit will sound like ass.

i am considering selling my PDP CX Maple kit and going with a sexy 5 piece Ludwig Bubinga kit...I am so in love with Ludwig that I think I need to go back. the kit I have now is nice, and they sound great...but there is something magical that I see in Ludwig drums.

I have a 1972 Vintage Classic Ludwig kit at my parents house in Charlotte that i grew up playing, and it is my favorite drum set ever. Seems to age like wine...I just didn't want to take it on the road when I was playing shows in college (hence, the PDP CX kit).

Now that i'm not really playing any shows anymore, I think I can upgrade to something that I want to last a lifetime.

I may take a look at the TAMA bubinga kits as well.

*If anyone has an interest in my kit, let me know. I'm not sure I'm ready to sell it but i'd entertain discussion about it. It's the kit in my pictures on TWW (the red sparkle one).

**PS: Did anyone know that Ludwig drums were manufactured in Monroe, NC????? I had no idea...I think i want to go down and see about taking a tour!!!! anyone interested!?!?!

My first kit was Ludwig. Parts of it are still in the attic at my parent's house, but it is rough.

Bass drum plys were coming apart from where I think someone left it out in the rain. I peeled off over half the layers of ply and the bass drum was crazy flexible. Without drum hoops it sagged really badly, lol. The legs had been ripped out, so I took some bike tires and screwed them to the bottom. Everything was on it's last leg with that kit. It was punk as fuck!

^ Sam Ash had some used maple Starclassics with the same orange wrap as yours when I went in last week.
$2600; ouch!

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/msg/2324042973.html

If this were a 6-piece I'd consider checking them out. I don't want to spend that much, but I could always sell of the cymbals and stands to recoup some of the overage.

Yeah, that's a lot of money. I got a KILLER deal on mine, so I'm a bit spoiled though. Having friends with Starclassics who are about to get their car repossessed is the way to go.

The gear is pretty nice too, but I dunno. I feel like I've seen some better deals. It all depends on what you're looking for. Maple/Bubinga Starclassics will never be cheap. Birch is much more doable. For that much money I'd start looking into Pork Pies or something like that.

I came across a British drum maker not long ago, and they make the most beautiful drums I have ever seen. I'm terrified to even ask what they run though, as I think most of them are custom orders.

I think the top kit is wrapped in rosewood and the bottom kit is wrapped in walnut. Rosewood is hard to (ethically) acquire these days, so it could be something else. Reclaimed materials are often used for small batch custom jobs such as this though. I'm not really sure what bubinga looks like, so maybe that's a possibility.

http://www.musicradar.com/gear/all/drums/acoustic/drum-kits/5-piece-drum-kits/custom-exotic-ply-series-kit-17422/review/2

According to this they're £1797 for a 5-piece. That's around $3k US although I'm sure they'll tack on a shipping surcharge. Out of my price range, but not ridiculous by any means. Cheaper than exotic wrapped DWs by far.

Check out some of their custom snares and whatnot on the page. They recently started doing 3 ply snares, and I think they've done a few sets of full Walnut, Oak, etc.

Baller.

If I'm spending that much $ I'd have a tough time making a decision. I see all these small companies producing custom handmade drums and they're beautiful and all, but for $texas I'd have a had time not looking to something like a Reference Series Pearl kit. Phew.
