i havent BSOD'ed pre-sp1 vista yet that i recall and that's been a year off and on dual booted with a macbook pro. they won't let me get sp1 off of windows update. TJB627 informed me that it was probably that it didn't recognize the drivers i had (since i had to run some Apple drivers). i guess ole M$ found a way to lock out the Apple ppl a bit. anyone have a link to dl it outside of windows update? 3/24/2008 2:36:10 PM |

lol i actually thought they had gotten rid of BSODs with vista, cause i've never actually personally seen a BSOD on vista or freezing in general. Only freezing i've ever seen was from overclocking. 3/24/2008 2:53:11 PM |

Last year, the company extended the sales life cycle -- the time during which PC manufacturers and system builders could sell computers with XP installed -- to June 30, 2008. It will stop selling XP altogether on Jan. 31, 2009. And it extended the mainstream support period for XP to April 14, 2009, in an effort to reassure customers made nervous by the long delays in shipping Vista. " |

Quote : | "Microsoft top brass 'burned' by Vista problems
Private Microsoft emails unearthed during a US court case have revealed that even the software giant's own executives struggled to get Windows Vista running smoothly.
Early adopters of the operating system, which launched last year, battled with widespread hardware and software compatibility issues. Many PCs initially sold as "Vista Capable" were unable to run some of Vista's core features, sparking a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.
Many computer components and peripherals required updated drivers in order to work with Vista. In numerous cases these were not available until long after the operating system launched.
But the emails show that it wasn't just end-users who were incensed by Vista's teething issues. In fact, Microsoft's top brass were fully aware of them from the outset.
One executive, Mike Nash, complained he was "burned" so badly by compatibility issues he was left with "a $2100 email machine".
Steven Sinofsky, the Microsoft executive in charge of Windows, struggled to even get his home printer working with Vista. In an email to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in February last year, Sinofsky outlined reasons why Vista struggled at launch.
He said hardware and software vendors never "really believed we would ever ship [Vista] so they didn't start the work [on updated drivers] until very late in 2006".
"People who rely on using all the features of their hardware (like Jon's Nikon scanner) will not see availability for some time, if ever, depending on the [manufacturer]," Sinofsky wrote.
Ballmer responded with a terse "Righto".
The "Jon" referred to is Microsoft board member and its former chief operating officer Jon Shirley, who experienced compatibility problems with his Epson printer and scanner and his Nikon film scanner.
He could not even get some of Microsoft's own MSN software products to work on Vista and refused to upgrade his other computer to the operating system.
"I cannot understand with a product this long in creation why there is such a shortage of drivers," Shirley wrote to Ballmer.
Other emails from various Microsoft executives show that even they struggled to work out what "Vista Capable" and "Vista Ready" meant when buying a new PC.
"Is it true that Vista Ready doesn't necessarily mean Aero capable? I got a Dell Latitude that is Vista Ready but doesn't have enough graphics [hardware]," Sinofsky wrote.
Aero, one of Vista's most heavily marketed features, is the operating system's new graphical interface. It resembles MacOS X but can only be enabled when running on a PC with the latest graphics hardware.
In a statement regarding the release of the emails, Microsoft spokesman Jack Evans said employees had raised concerns with Vista in order to make the program better for customers.
"That's the sort of exchange we want to encourage. And in the end, we believe we succeeded in achieving both objectives," Evans said." |

Damn these people must have some old shit. I have more driver problems on windows XP than i do vista. I never really have to install drivers on vista if i reformat, it does everything, whereas on XP i have to individually get various drivers. Kinda annoying. My game controllers actually work better on vista than they do on XP. 3/26/2008 12:15:41 PM |

^My damn all-in-one printer keeps fucking up in XP also. I can't figure out the issue. Works fine in vista. Plus my REALLY REALLY old cyberlink remote control requires a driver in XP, but works w/o installing one in vista. The wireless 360 controller seems to work a lot smoother in vista too.
Windows 7 i think is supposed to be out late 2009/ early 2010.
-but then again all my hardware is new except for that remote which might explain my lack of driver issues.

drivers written for Vista are worlds better than XP and previous. One of the big changes for integrators with Vista was Microsoft closing tons of driver loopholes, forcing 3rd parties to adhere to much more strict standards in driver development.
Hence the long delays, because of higher cost for back compatible drivers. 3/26/2008 2:02:55 PM |

yea you can hax0r dreamscene video desktop to work with any version of vista by swapping the DS.dll's and a reg edit but I actually want the animated backgrounds that are abstract enough not to be distracting yet pretty pleasant to stare at once in awhile. 3/26/2008 2:50:36 PM |

^Again vista home premium does not have dreamscene as an option. It's a hack. Vista ultimate is the only one with dreamscene. If you use the dreamscene hack on Vista it requires modifying windows files, and it runs slightly different as i understand it. So again, not relevent in a hardware comparison it runs slightly different when hacked. 3/26/2008 5:53:51 PM |

Quote : | "After a week full of Red Bulls, Fruit by the Foot and dreams of In-N-Out, the mighty Sony VAIO loaded with Linux stood as the only machine unhacked by the end of the PWN 2 OWN hacking contest at CanSecWest. As you're well aware by now, the MacBook Air on display was seized in two minutes by the presumably well prepared Charlie Miller, and after two full days of work, Shane Macaulay and a few of his 1337 associates managed to crack the Vista rig on Friday. Reportedly, Shane and his pals weren't expecting to do battle with the extra protected SP1 version of Vista, and while the exact loophole won't be divulged, we are told that it was a cross-platform bug that "took advantage of Java to circumvent Vista's security." In the end, it was reported that some folks on hand had discovered bugs in the Linux OS, but many of them "didn't want to put the work into developing the exploit code that would be required to win the contest." " |
Why'd it only take them 2 minutes on the macbook air but 2 days on vista sp1? I guess the guy was prepared.
-Supposedly they were allowed to install flash/java on the vista machine so they could find an exploit. Without any third party software like flash or java they weren't able to find an exploit and would have tied with the linux box. Which is pretty impressive for vista.

ah good old vista. seems very stable on my machine. no crashes as of yet. some hiccups here and there, like for example after i open the lip of my laptop it will flicker once or three times, and on at least one occasion it reset the display setting to something very low, and i had to reset it, but at any rate, it was stable. i did not use vista before sp1 so i cannot compare them, but however vista with sp1 is probably worth installing over xp right now if you are casual to a high-moderate user. but if you are into dev'ing or use your pc for your work, like if you are a graphic artist, you might want to get some peer advice before you upgrade xp, otherwise you have my blessing to upgrade 4/7/2008 8:51:30 AM |

has anyone used an unattended XML file during vista installation to PERMANENTLY and COMPLETELY change the location of the "users" directory (my documents) to another partition? josh mouch's solution is 1.) very complex and 2.) seems to have problems with certain updates

I just got this laptop: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800MHzFSB, 3M L2 Cache) 4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm 15.4 inch Wide Screen WSXGA+ TrueLife LCD with Camera 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
which I thought would be plenty but Vista is still running a bit slow, the really annoying thing is that half the time it doesnt recognize my damn double click (and I have messed with the mouse settings)... any thoughts?
