Apparently early rumblings out of Clemson's spring practice say that Tammy Bowden is unhappy with the defense. They are reportedly getting owned by the offense. Now Clemson's offense will probably be one of, if not the best offense in the ACC, but you still don't want your defense getting owned out there in practice. The loss of DL Philip Merling and LBs Tremaine Billie and Nick Watkins, may have weakened their run defense, which I could then see Davis and Spiller running all over them. All those guys need to do is get out into some open space and they are gone for a long gain/TD.

well, regardless of RB rank of the team -he already used a medical redshirt season so why not get him in there? He's a move-the-pile-type back and is a nice chance of pace from the speedier, shiftier backs especially in short field situations (just in case you forgot how sh!tty we were running the ball in the red zone last year)

I would think that the coaching staff would like to use Brown a lot this year, b/c it's his final year. It'd be best to save Baker and Eugene for their senior seasons. Of course the most snaps will go to the guy that is getting it done. I definitely would want to get all 3 of them snaps throughout the game. The key is to have a sub rotation that ensures they all have fresh legs, but can also get all of them into a groove. A 2 back formation also maybe effective, especially with Eugene getting into the open field and catching short passes out of the backfield like he did a fair amount last year.

The one thing I have liked about this staffs offense is that it spreads the ball around to everyone. Besides Bowens doing his best Torry Holt impression in the UVA game, we didn't focus on getting the ball into one guy's hands for much of the game. Even in the UVA game we still got the ball spread out though, but everyone was overshadowed by Bowens' incredible 202 yard performance. While you want at least one playmaker at WR, you want to be able to keep defenses from focusing in on shutting down one guy. Think GT with Calvin Johnson and how a lot of their reads had him as the first option.

With TOB we just get it to everyone, whether that's Donald Bowens, Darrell Davis, Owen Spencer, the TEs, the FBs, or even a walk-on like Koyal George (he's moved to DB this year though).

With spring practices in full swing, why not release some early conference predictions for the 2008 ACC season? Consider these our spring projections (which are subject to change of course this summer).



Atlantic Division

1. Clemson - On paper, the Tigers have perhaps the best team they have had since their 1988 bunch that won the ACC Championship and defeated Oklahoma in the Citrus Bowl. Clemson has a talented, veteran signal caller, elite athletes at the skill positions (see Davis and Spiller) and a defense that is aggressive and attacking. The Tigers have gone 4-3 in November the last two seasons. To make it to Tampa, Clemson will have to play well the last few weeks of the year.

2. Wake Forest - It's time to recognize this program as a national one. After winning the ACC Championship in 2006, the Demon Deacons won nine games for an encore and defeated Big East runner-up Connecticut by two touchdowns in the Meineke Car Care Bowl last season. Back is quarterback Riley Skinner, '07 ACC Rookie of the Year Josh Allen at tailback and a veteran defense led by All-American Alphonso Smith at cornerback.

3. Florida State - Improvement will be expected from the Seminoles as they enter their second season under their revamped coaching staff. Florida State has gone 14-12 the past two seasons, but has a nice core of young talent and a very favorable schedule compared to years past. Suspensions of a significant portion of the team will carry through the first four games, including a key league clash with Wake Forest.

4. Maryland - The Terrapins will boast one of the most experienced offenses in the ACC, a unit led by five returning starters on the offensive front. Quarterback Chris Turner and receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey are an emerging pass-catch combination. Key playmakers must be replaced on defense, but this is the type of team that head coach Ralph Friedgen can do good things with.

5. NC State - It's safe to assume this program will take a step forward as the Wolfpack continue to grow under former Boston College coach Tom O'Brien. An influx of young talent on both sides of the football will be provide a boost. Jamelle Eugene, Andre Brown and Toney Baker provide great depth at tailback.

6. Boston College - This will be an entirely new team on offense: no Matt Ryan, Andre Callender, L.V. Whitworth, Kevin Challenger or Gosder Cherilus. The same can be said on defense with Jolonn Dunbar, DeJuan Triblle and Jamie Silva now gone, though linebacker Brian Toal returns from injury. This team lost a devasting amount of veteran leadership and experience.


Coastal Division

1. Virginia Tech - You have to like the experience at quarterback with Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor returning. Both signal callers have plenty of positives they bring to the offense. A year older and wiser, the offensive line should be stronger. Running back Brandon Ore, who recently left the team, must be replaced. Yes, the Hokies lost a tremendous amount of NFL talent from their defense. That said, Bud Foster's units always reload.

2. Miami - The baby Hurricanes will be one of the youngest teams in the ACC, but this is a squad loaded with with athletes. While the quarterback position is unsettled, the backfield is well-stocked with Javarris James and Graig Cooper. The defense will benefit from the return of safety Anthony Reddick from an ACL injury. Randy Shannon has been recruiting south Florida as well as any Miami coach has. This team has as much young talent as any in the nation.

3. Georgia Tech - It will be a transition season for the Yellow Jackets who will adopt a completely new style under former Navy coach Paul Johnson. Fret not for Georgia Tech, however. Paul Johnson wins wherever he goes. Josh Nesbitt will likely be the point-man for the new option-offense. His physical skills are more than suitable for such a role. He and big-back Jonathan Dwyer could thrive. There are some holes on defense, but Tech will have one of the top front lines in the league.

4. North Carolina - There is a lot of optimism surrounding this program and rightfully so. Butch Davis will have a talented, experienced group ready to make a run up the ACC standings. Quarterback T.J. Yates has excellent targets, including veterans Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate. The defense should see considerable improvement in the defensive backfield especially. Davis has recruiting extremely well during his tenure in Chapel Hill and has some nice young talent now ready to play.

5. Virginia - After earning a Gator Bowl bid in 2007, Al Groh and company have some retooling to do in 2008. Gone is All-American Chris Long at defensive end, last year's leader of the Cavaliers. On offense, starting quarterback Jameel Sewell has been dismissed from the team. Talented sophomore Peter Lalich is now the man. Tailbacks Mikell Simpson and Cedric Peerman do provide great depth in the backfield. In Long and Branden Albert, the offensive and defensive lines will both lose first round picks to the NFL Draft.

6. Duke - The arrival of David Cutcliffe as the new head coach has brought some credibility to the Duke program. Cutcliffe won ten games as an SEC head coach at Ole Miss and is an offensive mastermind. The Blue Devil offense will have the premier pass-catch tandem in the ACC: quarterback Thaddeus Lewis and receiver Eron Riley. Developing depth on the offensive line and on defense will be key.

RANKING THE ACC COACHES

1. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest. The bottom line is this: No one does more with less at a place that had mastered losing before he arrived. Grobe's 20 wins over the last two years are the most in school annals. The ACC title and Orange Bowl berth he led the Deacs to in 2006 was one of the greatest college football accomplishments in the last 25 years. Is it any wonder major BCS programs knock on his door all the time?

2. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech. Many schools enjoy a breakthrough for a few seasons and then fade. The Hokies are the exception, thanks to a coach who built his program around special teams. Genius. Another huge key to Beamer's success has been his ability to keep star defensive coordinator Bud Foster in Blacksburg.

3. Bobby Bowden, Florida State. He may not have his hand on the pulse of minute details, but Bowden still sets the tenor for a program that's poised to bounce back. He gets major kudos for reshaping the program by altering his staff. You see, it's either adapt or die. And Bowden checked his ego at the door when he agreed to a succession plan.

4. Tom O'Brien, N.C. State. He took his lumps last year in his debut in Raleigh, but that doesn't un-do all of the standout work T.O.B. did for years in Chestnut Hill. Just imagine if Notre Dame or Washington had hired him. I still think it's a lead-pipe cinch that O'Brien will have the Wolfpack playing in the ACC title game within three-to-five years.

5. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech. Anyone who makes Navy a winner is a brilliant tactician in my book. He'll move higher on this chart if his offense works in a big boy league. And why shouldn't it? It's gonna be a blast watching defenses get a week to prep for Johnson's option, which will be fueled by quality I-A players.

6. Al Groh, Virginia. Call him rough. Call him gruff. You can also call him good. He runs an NFL style program that has seen bursts of brilliance. It's hard to believe Groh was on the hot seat at this time last year.

7. Tommy Bowden, Clemson. The guy is supposed to get fired every year. Yet he always survives amid a whacko fan base still spoiled by that 1981 national title. The school's patience with Bowden looks like it's about to pay big dividends, as the Tigers could be the favorite to win the ACC next season.

8. Butch Davis, North Carolina. Since reviving Miami, his rep has taken a hit after he stumbled with the Cleveland Browns and started poorly in Chapel Hill. But one gets the feeling Davis will get this sleeping giant moving up the charts as he continues to stockpile good recruiting classes.

9. David Cutcliffe, Duke. Think Ole Miss still regrets canning him? Coach Cut is a master offensive tactician, but questions remain about his ability to recruit. And if there's one thing Duke needs, it's a coach who can burn up the recruiting trail. At least Cutcliffe will benefit from an improved commitment to football by university honchos.

10. Ralph Friedgen, Maryland. It's official: The Fridge is running on empty. His fast start in College Park has given way to mediocre football. No one doubts Friedgen's ability to X-and-O. He's brilliant, but college football is much more than scheming. It's about relationship-building, too.

11. Jeff Jagodzinski, Boston College. He enjoyed a wildly successful debut season. Now, the hard part: maintaining the level of excellence. If he backs up last year's magic with another contending team, I'll stamp Jags as "legit."

12. Randy Shannon, Miami. His hiring look dubious. And his debut only cast more doubt on his ability. He's a player's coach and recruiting machine, but is he feared by his troops? Give Shannon credit for landing defensive coordinator Bill Young from Kansas. But will the offense ever take flight?

^^ Nah we'll probably start out not too bad but end up messing up down the stretch going 5-7 again and missing a bowl.

Realistic expectations this year for our fans should be:
1. Improve on our record from last year. (that shouldn't be too hard; plz 2 not jinx )
2. Get to a bowl game (which if we improve our record by only one game won't be a problem)
3. Beat UNC (we spotted them 14 points and still came out victorious)
4. Beat the teams we should beat. These teams include BC (they're due for a big dive considering how much they lost, I think they'll be last place in the Atlantic Division), Duke (god help us if we lose to them), W&M, ECU. That's four wins right there, two of which are conference games. Beat UNC and steal another one from say FSU (which is very likely) then we'll have improved on our record, gotten to 4-4 in the ACC, and made a bowl.
5. Be in the game until the end. No more stinking blowouts like the one to Maryland to end the season. That was just plain embarassing. Clemson is the only team on the schedule that I won't be mad about getting blown out to.
