Which Blu-Ray player should I buy? All are $399. Reviews are quite favorable to the Panasonic, but it's been out since December of last year, longer than the other two models. The Sony one is brand new. All are 1080p

Sadly, a PS3.
Don't worry though, I'm sure the price of standalone players will drop now that HD DVD is dead! 8/4/2008 6:35:14 PM |

my dad has the Panasonic but he got it last Christmas like you posted. I have no idea if its any good, tvs suck so bad i doubt you could find much fault with a DVD player.

I'm guessing there hasn't been any major improvements to BluRay quality in the last year or so... just making the decoding or whatever process faster? I remember people saying early high-def DVD players were extremely slow.
I guess I have 30 days to see if it doesn't suck. It's going to be hooked up to my pioneer elite PRO-111FD, 50" 1080p plasma 8/4/2008 6:49:55 PM |

That's great, too bad it's 2008 now and there's an absolutely immense stock of normal DVDs at $5 along with any number of alternatives to actually purchasing DVDs.

Well see between vhs and dvd there were a lot of reasons to upgrade. Quality, features, ability to quickly jump to content positions, etc.
With Blu-Ray there's just not that huge list of reasons. Most people go to Walmart/Best-Buy/whatever and see a movie in dvd and blu-ray formats and would rather just buy the cheaper of the two. Regular ole dvd quality is good enough for them.
So unless all of a sudden content providers pull all their dvds off shelves and switch everything to blu-ray overnight, fat chance on getting a mass format exodus like there was from vhs to dvd. 8/11/2008 6:01:07 AM |

I wasn't being sarcastic.
If you're talking about that little bit I italics then that was just alluding to the number of blu-ray movies that have come out that really aren't that great in quality. Hell just go buy a progressive scan dvd player for a ghetto fix for your old dvd collection.
Like I said. The majority of the public aren't going to jump on this right a way for minor benefits. 8/11/2008 6:26:03 AM |

Yeah i just watched "Escape from New York" last night and the quality was pretty bad. Apparently it's still better than the dvd though. You can't exactly re-film a movie so i'd imagine the quality can only get so much better.
On the other hand my Blu-ray of Casablanca is just beautiful despite the 4:3 OAR. They need to release Wizard of Oz in HD already. I bet that the 35mm digital scan would look amazing, especially with the technicolor.

I was thinking about getting a Blu-Ray this afternoon with some gift cards I got from Circuit City for my bday...
Was looking at
Samsung - Blu-ray High-Definition Disc Player with 1080p Output, Model: BD-P1500
-------
I'm pretty novice at this and it took me like 5 years to even buy a DVD player when they came out, but I have some $$$ and am so used to HD-everything on TV that I want the same for movies.
Thoughts? 9/11/2008 12:17:00 PM |

Unless there's some specific issue you think you'd have with using a video game console as a DVD player, you're better off buying a PS3. 9/11/2008 12:32:56 PM |
NyM410 J-E-T-S 50085 Posts user info edit post |
Hmmm... that seems viable.
I can sell my 360 (I REALLY don't need 2 gaming systems). How much do you think I would get for a 1 year old 360?
I mean I'd be paying, what, $340 anyway for that BluRay player so it's probably less expensive to sell my 360/newer games and just get the PS3 anyway...
I'll do some research. Thanks for the suggestion. I see that the PS3 is one of the few that is Blu-Ray 2.0 compatible for the future...
*** Do places like Gamestop buy Xbox360's? Or just games? I really don't feel like using Craigslist/EBay...

If you were going to keep the 360 when buying the Blu-Ray player, I don't see why you'd sell it at this point. You're just going to lose money on everything you've ever bought for it especially since it just recently price dropped. No harm in hanging onto it. 9/11/2008 3:53:49 PM |

the biggest downside to the ps3 as blu-ray is the lack of an IR remote... even if you have a $400 universal remote, it can't control the ps3 without buying an adaptor for the ps3 or buying the ps3 remote 9/11/2008 4:59:51 PM |
