so i just installed the latest build of minefield and it's much faster than my chrome setup for some reason
i don't know what it is - every browser seems after after you haven't used it for a long time. could it be that the cache is clear? or could it be that i don't have offline access with google gears set up on minefield? 4/18/2009 2:06:28 AM |

Does anyone know how how to prevent web pages from stealing the cursor focus when they finish loading? I hate when I'm typing something in the address or search bars and half of what I'm typing ends up in a text box on whatever page just finished loading.
I've searched and all I had found was people asking how to do the same thing I'm asking OR how to make their web pages steal cursor focus at will. Not very helpful so far.
Anyways, I'm sure this annoys some of you too. 8/10/2009 10:07:20 AM |

3.6 alpha 1 is out. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.6a1/releasenotes/
adds previews for tabs (should appeal to windows 7 folks) and more startup and javascript enhancements.
Quote : | "To bring them (tab previews) to life, open about:config in a tab, type in browser.ctrlTab.previews, then set that value to true and hit Ctrl+Tab to activate it. If you want Firefox to open the last used tab when you hit Ctrl+Tab, set browser.ctrlTab.mostRecentlyUsed to true as well." |

for some reason firefox on this pc will just not open new windows. i'm using the latest release and don't have it set to block popups. I can open new tabs using ctrl+t but any link I click will not open in a new window or tab. If i try to open a new window from the file menu, I get nothing.
can anybody help? I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. only add-ins i've got are AVG safe search and adblock
stupid me, disabling AVG safe search fixed it

I'm about to roll back from 3.5.2 to whatever the latest 3.0 build is. 3.5 just has far too many ridiculous bugs...just tonight it's taken away my Back button, to where sometimes I'll click a link and try to go back by clicking or [backspace] and nothing works 8/18/2009 3:38:09 AM |

I've gotten that once, don't remember what I was doing when it happened though. I have been having this problem where I cannot click links or put text in forms unless I open the firefox options menu, close it, then go back to the page. Strange. 9/11/2009 3:11:16 PM |

^^^I started having that problem this morning too while visiting certain websites, after I upgraded last night to Firefox 3.5.3. I assume it's some sort of bug in the new release, but I haven't worried too much about it. They usually fix stuff like that pretty quick... 9/11/2009 3:53:49 PM |

i've been having it for weeks if not months
it's probably an extension, but i haven't taken the time to figure out which one. i don't use any weird extensions though, so i'm a little resistant to that idea 9/11/2009 3:59:31 PM |
bjwilli2 Veteran 405 Posts user info edit post |
That's weird, mine definitely just started this morning after I downloaded the latest Firefox update. I didn't make any other changes to extensions, and I only use a few basic ones anyway. It specifically is having a problem when I visit espn.com. I figured it was some sort of bug in the javascript or something, since espn is pretty heavy on that sort of thing...
I'm going to try rebooting and see if that helps
update: I just tried rebooting, and lo and behold, I visited espn and didn't have a problem. That was the only website that was giving me issues, so maybe it's ok now. Also, in the process of rebooting, I updated OS X to 10.6.1, but I don't know if that was the issue or not...

yup, 3.5.7 is out reportedly fixed some bugs w/ updating. Mozilla released Firefox 3.5.7 and 3.0.17 on Tuesday to fix a common crash problem and the lack of a prominent suggestion to upgrade.
3.7 is coming soon and reportedly the fastest yet, finally multi-thread support (IE8 & Chrome already have it) http://www.myoutsourcedbrain.com/2009/11/firefox-in-parallel-pre-release-version.html http://www.neowin.net/news/main/10/01/05/firefox-37-will-be-fast-really-fast 1/7/2010 5:22:08 PM |

i installed 3.6 as a result of trying to get rid of this stupid hijack...it seems a bit snappier and, for whatever reason, it fixes some issues i had with 3.5.6/3.5.7 (namely that it wouldn't hold on to login information for sites like tww and newegg and others so that, while it would save my username/passwords as i requested, it wouldn't automatically log me in)...that might have been something i did in terms of settings, but heck if i could figure out what it was since i uninstalled/reinstalled to fix it and it was never resolved
as noted, it FEELS a bit faster, but that might be the placebo effect...in any case, it's no worse than 3.5.7 was 2/1/2010 7:43:38 AM |

I'm so glad they finally fixed that. Previously when you ctrl clicked a link it would put it all the way at the end of the tabs. Now just like Chrome when you open a new link it sticks it to the right of the parent tab instead of at the end.
Also there's now a built in option for hiding the menu bar. view-->tool bars--> menu bar.2/1/2010 5:17:42 PM |

Now that google has add-ons for chrome, Firefox is dead to me.
Chrome will give you all the functionality of Frefox AND it will start-up in less than 3 minutes.

IE8 groups and color codes the tabs. While a normal tab is just the default chrome, if you "Open In A New Tab" from a page, it pops the new tab next to the opener and highlights both tabs to show the relationship.2/15/2010 11:12:04 AM |

Yeah, I totally agree. I stopped using firefox a while back and I am only using chrome at home and work. Firefox seemed really bloated and slow after only a half dozen plugins. Chrome is much faster at starting and is cleaner. The only real plugin I missed that firefox had was foxmarks, but now that chrome supports bookmark syncing Im all good.2/16/2010 11:30:03 PM |

Firefox 4.0 Alpha 2 + Chrome-Like Plug-In Isolation = Fewer Browser Crashes
http://lifehacker.com/5484789/firefox-40-alpha-2-%252B-chrome+like-plug+in-isolation--fewer-browser-crashes
Quote : | "Mozilla's second Developer Preview of Firefox 4.0's framework and back-end highlights a feature we'd heard was coming: separate processes for plug-ins. That means if (when) Flash or another plug-in crashes, there's a good chance your browser won't go with it.
This second alpha of Firefox 3.7—which is, confusingly, what will actually be released as 4.0—adds some performance improvements and HTML5 efficiencies, but the main new thing is the "out-of-process" plug-ins. Contained, stand-alone processes for each tab and add-on are likely in Firefox's future, but starting off with the most likely crash candidates is a good start." |
