this election will probably be close even though it shouldn't. It should be the democrats, overwhelmingly.

The fact that

- still a war in Iraq
- $4.00 gas
- housing crisis
- energy crisis
- Obama is black (putting a black candidate on the ticket will draw votes away from him because America still isn't there yet... it's a shame, but it is what it is)

All that said, the fact that McCain is polling within the statistical margin of error in many polls is pretty damned miraculous.

He could sure up his ticket with a strong conservative VP choice and that may be his ticket to the White House.

I think McCain has it. Even among republican and moderate voters that disapprove of him; he will still get their vote because McCain is better than the alternative.

are we completely off the "Obama is mixed" thing yet? He's pretty much being called the first black legit Presidential nominee and whatnot. Is he still going to be mixed race when he's defending his grandmother though? And then 'black' when it marks how historic this election is?

We'll see about that, because we all have different definitions of what makes a candidate better than the alternative. Sometimes it's the party, sometimes it's the individual, and most of the time its the issues. I predict that McCain will come across as generally unimpressive in a multitude of categories, and impressive in some categories that won't matter much to large groups of mainstream voters. The closer to the center Obama drifts, the more independent and moderate votes he will absorb. All politicans promise big things around election time, but Obama stands alone as the anti-war candidate with a record that reflects it, as well as a refusal to accept special interest funds. He's definitely unique, definitely black, and has a new and refreshing message of change that will show the entire world that America is still a place where dreams come true. McCain cannot compete with this message, but he can stand his ground and influence his base. The next few months will be the tipping point in this election. McCain needs to step up big time to avoid a huge loss.

I'm not saying I agree with the sentiment, but it'll be very tough for him to carry some states in the solid south. And look what happened the last two times a Democratic presidential candidate couldn't carry a southern state.

I'm tired of this race for now.

I was hoping McCain and Obama would start a sort of pre-convention joint townhall tour, but guess who chickened out? Rightly so I guess. Obama has gotten into a lot of trouble when he goes off script (implying there was no Al Qaeda in Iraq, saying he would meet with America's enemies without pre-conditions, etc etc) and he doesn't have a command lead in the polls, so why fuck things up worse?

But now that only leaves us with both sides watching each other like hawks to find somehting to piss and moan about. Best recent example, Obama's claim that McCain is flip-flopping on social security when he is not. It all depends on what you mean by "privatization" and McCain's meaning in Friday's townhall was clearly not inconsistant with previous remarks. Even the Associated Press says so. Indeed Obama's remarks are the one that look suspect when compare his comment on unsecurity of the stock market with his plans to increase the people's stock holdings (as the AP also points out).
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jAvBP-erjO6bce7YRvcb06Em2dVQD919CRJ81

I guess I should stop watching, but what the fuck else is on TV? MadMen doesn't start till July.

Obama reminds me of a little school yard punk. Claiming "time in" whenever he does an attack.. then yelling "time out" real quick to avoid the counter.

Whenever he gets attacked its slime, politics of old, etc. Whenever Obama does it, he feigns ingnorance or just dismisses the idea that he had an attack ad.

Im really hoping people wise up.

^ Wow. I really REALLY like that analogy. It's exactly the way he plays ball. I mean, remember when he denied during one of the debates that his campaign ever brought up Hillary's sniper-fire sanffu? And the next day reporters were pulling up examples from only days before? Obama has been going negative for months and no one seems to realize because of exactly that "time-in/time-out" schtick he's been playing.

gg eye.

Even a marginal amount of votes away from Obama due to him being black will be critical in the swing states, 1% due to that could put certain swing states in McCain's column.....it is sad, but there is a group that will either vote for McCain or not at all, and if it is just 1% that group could decide the election in key states.

Obama is already spending time in NC. He recently kicked off his economic tour in Raleigh. Edwards alone can't flip NC, but I think if they have him, then NC would be within striking distance and they'd have to take that seriously.

He'd gain more north carolinians than he'd lose by picking Edwards. That doesn't mean he's the best VP pick, b/c someone else might gain him more votes overall.

As much at the latte-sipping left hates to admit it, no Democrat was ever elected to the Presidency without the South. We just got a shit-ton of a electoral votes, man.

So I hope Obama goes with his instincts and picks some scarf-wearing-clam-soup-eating-Prius-driving-Strokes-loving Yankee. Nothing would make my gun-totting, bitter heart happier!

yea i was wondering about this too. either he's black or he's mixed. racists would say any drop of black makes you black. people with prejudice want to say he's part white because it makes them feel better.

how about this, obama is a human being running for president. who gives a fucking flying fuck what race he is? motherfucker has 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 legs, 2 arms, 10 fingers, 10 toes and a brain. who gives a shit what light looks like refracting off of him?

A new number from the latest Hotline/Diageo poll goes a long way toward dispelling the idea that Barack Obama is leading a seriously divided party. On the contrary, the poll suggests that it's John McCain who has a problem in this regard.

The poll, conducted in the wake of Obama's clinching the nomination and including sampling dates from before Hillary Clinton's final concession, found that 68% of Democratic primary voters were satisfied with Obama as the nominee, with 30% preferring someone else.

By contrast, only 52% of Republican primary voters were satisfied with John McCain as their nominee, with 45% preferring someone else. And this is despite the fact that McCain sewed up his nomination months ago, while Democratic emotions were still raw when this poll was conducted.
"

Interesting, you would think it was McCain who had the bitter 5 month primary fight?

So Friday, Obama told a crowd that he wants to raise payroll taxes on people making $250,000.

AP wrote:
Quote :
"The presidential candidate told senior citizens in Ohio that it is unfair for middle-class earners to pay the Social Security tax "on every dime they make," while millionaires and billionaires pay it on only "a very small percentage of their income.""

There's that "fairness" schtick again...showing Obama's disregard for capitalism. As I recall, the social security program was supposed to be a pension program for everyone...not a redistribution of money from rich to poor. Each worker paying his own way.

someone needs to ask obama if he is going to raise the cap on benefits as well?

The way it is now. I pay the same amount in SS taxes as bill gates. And when we both retire(assuming its still around) we will both get the same amount per month. That is fair. Now making him pay more and not increasing his benefit is crap. But i think that is exactly the thing he is proposing.

Social Security is broken, and I have to agree with conservatives in regards to this point. It would be very unfair to force people that make more money to pay more into an already broken system. If anything, we need to change the entire system so it's no longer useless, instead of flooding it with money in an unfair fashion. I will be watching this point closely, because I do not agree with Obama in regards to Social Security. However, to be fair, I don't agree with anyone on it.

how about this plan stimwalt.

My plan:

Continue to fund current retirees with the companies portion of SS taxes paid and reduce our foreign military presence to float it.

Give people in their 30s-40s the option of taking thier portion into a forced private account. The account/money can not be spent on any other govt programs and will be held by a private institution of yoru choice. The money at retirement will be sent to you in monthly payments to a level. Upon your death, your spouse can also receive your payment AND hers. Upon both her death the money can be willed to future generations or donated. THe money, which is YOURS, will compound over the generations and eventually fund itself. If you keep a cap on reimbursements and spending and allow the transfer or willing to future generations. Even the people will low incomes will build retirement wealth over generations.

Just my take on it. Ok, try to shoot some holes in it.

We need money from current workers in order to pay for retirees on SS. Once workers start diverting those SS taxes, we'll face a budget shortage.

Prawn, you keep funding the current retirees with the companies portion paid to SS. The people in their 30s and younger will lose those for a number of years. Someone has to make a sacrifice on this.

If we can scale down our military overseas and continue to pay with our employers portion of SS taxes. I think we have a shot.

SOmething else we could do is cancel the medicare drug plan.

ok, incase some of you didnt know. THe amount of SS taxes taken out of your check each pay period, your employer pays an equal amount through the business to a maximum of about 15k a year I think.

so who's the favorite to win. Oeuvre is pretty biased. i think McCain would have been great given his past and if he was 20 years younger. someone eb that song, "Young Folk".

if McCain wins the nation surely dies. we'll be ruled by England. they'll have to reconvine.

Here's a thing, I will keep posting things as they appear

Quote :
"In his AIPAC speech, McCain mocked Obama, not just for wanting to negotiate with our enemies, but for presenting that plan as a "bold new idea".

He then presented his own bold new idea - we enact laws to divest from Iran financially, just like we did for South Africa back in the day.

Unfortunately for McCain:

- that same idea was not particularly new either - it was the substance of a 2007 bipartisan bill presented by Barack Obama and Sam Brownback.

- ...which McCain voted against.

- also, one of his main campaign honchos (forget which one) has a day job lobbying on behalf of a steel company with headquarters in Tehran. So while McCain's calling for the country to divest from Iran, he apparently hasn't managed to take that step with his own campaign.

- oh yeah, that South Africa thing? Where he got the idea? McCain voted against that, too.

You know, in a sane world, a gaffe so monumental that it pits you against your own campaign, voting record, and reality itself would get reported on. As it is, apparently the big news that week for McCain was that he is not flattered by a green backdrop."
