i don't have any particular basis for this other than my general impression of last.fm as a company...

but i strongly doubt that they want to make this change at all. they are required to pay royalties to record labels for every song they play. i'm sure they realize they are going to at the least lose a lot of customers and at the worst destroy their brand, but in order to survive, you adapt as necessary.

iow, i'll be happy to blame the record labels who charge what they do for their product in order to try to maintain archaic expectations on the value of their products and services

I agree, but I wonder what other methods they have approached. I can't remember, do they display ads on the screen during the songs? That's one big thing pandora does

Me too, I know when changes in royalties were made a few years back it was a really big deal for these companies. I remember Pandora questioning whether they could continue at all, so maybe last.fm just wasn't quite as successful in whatever they implemented. Or maybe they're predicting another shift and are just being proactive. With the way record companies are, there's not really enough room for both groups to be money grubbers

that ended yesterday. funny thing, i actually got last.fm to work on my phone, i just would rather play on the desktop to conserve battery

Yeah I knew that was up, but it hasn't popped up any 'you must have a subscription to use the radio' thing at all so I was hopeful it would let me play . Seems too buggy overall for me to pay for...but I'm hesitant to download a ton of music so I might do it anyway.

Google Music needs to hurry up and get started.

I don't use it to listen to music. I use it to track/chart the music I listen to

and it scrobbles from Spotify, so yeah.
