The press conference this afternoon was ridiculous. Too bad they shut down the investigation early.

This is a disturbingly accurate term, even if he didn't mean it to be. . .

OUT

http://www.newsobserver.com/110/story/1386871.html

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been convicted at his impeachment trial and thrown out of office.

His removal comes nearly two months after his arrest on charges of trying to sell Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat. He becomes the first U.S. governor in more than 20 years to be removed by impeachment.

The vote in the Illinois Senate to convict him of abuse of power was 59-0. Lawmakers immediately began voting on whether to bar Blagojevich from ever holding public office in Illinois.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Patrick Quinn automatically becomes the new governor.

Earlier in the day, Blagojevich came to the Senate to make a last-minute plea to save his job, warning lawmakers that they were about to set a "dangerous" and "chilling" precedent.

it will be a sad indictiment of Sen Reid and his democratic majority if the Illinois state republicans do what they couldnt. at least they understand that blagojevich is a crook and anyone associated with him is immediately suspect.

Reid is a disgrace. his 'leadership' is a joke, and may well cost Dems the senate in 2010.

they had the bully-pulpit, and they couldn't persuade anybody to do anything. Now the Republicans might build up a public campaign and guilt Burris into quitting and claim the moral high-ground for doing so, which is what the Dems were trying to do by refusing to seat him in the first place.

they could have continued to refuse to seat him, or at least refuse to grant him full senatorial powers, on the basis of not having the proper signature from the Illinois Sec of State, who IIRC did their part in refusing to certify him.

the Dem Senators would continue to claim the moral high ground as the case was drug before the Supreme Court. they would have eventually (probably) had to comply with a court order, giving them the advantage.

as it was Harry Reid made declarative statements that he "absolutely would not" seat Burris, then turned around with a few days, said "oops never mind" and did exactly what he insisted he would not do.

he got fucking punked, in the worst way, in the most public way. And its not like the only thing hes had blown up in his face. he's a piss poor leader, and should have been drummed out of his leadership seat by the incoming Senate this past January.

well, IIRC, a high-court in Illinois ruled that the SoS signature was not actually required to confirm Burris.

I'm not sure how dragging it to the Supreme Court and losing would be a win for the Democrats, besides the whole not having to go back on their word thing.

well, yes, this is true. It was a major lost opportunity leaving power with Reid and Pelosi.

Blagojevich can't go to Costa Rica for TV show

April 21, 2009

CHICAGO -- A federal judge today denied permission to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich to travel to Costa Rica to participate in a reality TV show.

U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel called modifying the terms of Blagojevich's bail on political corruption charges "a bad idea."

"It's just another day," Blagojevich said after the hearing.

Even if Blagojevich had a personal monitor, that person wouldn't have the authority to arrest him, Zagel noted. He also said Blagojevich needs to stick around to read the government's evidence, because only then will he be able to understand the jeopardy he is in.

Zagel added that he was sympathetic to Blagojevich's financial condition, but said there were others ways for him to earn money.

When Blajojevich arrived at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse in downtown Chicago this morning for the hearing, he said participating in the reality show would be "a way to earn a living and support my children.
"It's not my first choice, but it's a living," he said.

Blagojevich's lawyers had asked permission for their client to travel to Costa Rica in June to be a contestant on NBC's "I'm a Celebrity ... Get me Out of Here!"

In a short-lived 2003 version of the show, contestants, among other things, had to put insects, worms and rats in their pants, sit in a tank of leeches and wade through a swamp populated by snakes and eels.

Blagojevich also is seeking the court's okay to use more than $2 million in his campaign fund to pay for his legal expenses. Zagel encouraged his attorneys to file a motion to that effect but said he believed Blagojevich should be allowed to do so. A hearing on that issue was set for May 1."

" CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- Christopher Kelly, former chief fundraiser for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, is dead, according to the ex-governor and a hospital official.
Christopher Kelly, 51, was former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's chief fundraiser.

"I am deeply saddened to hear that Chris had died," Blagojevich's statement said.

The Cook County, Illinois, medical examiner did not return calls Saturday. However, Kelly, 51, of Burr Ridge, was pronounced dead at Stroger hospital in Cook County at 10:46 a.m. (11:46 a.m. ET), hospital spokesman Marcel Bright told CNN.

Bright said Kelly had been treated at another county hospital late Friday before being transported to Stroger early Saturday, though he would not disclose any other details.

"It is now a police investigation," he said.

Cook County authorities did not release any details about Kelly's death. Blagojevich was in New York and declined to comment further.

Earlier this year, Blagojevich, who was impeached and removed from office, pleaded not guilty to federal corruption charges. A federal grand jury in April indicted him on 16 felony counts, including racketeering, conspiracy, wire fraud and making false statements to investigators.

The indictment also named some of Blagojevich's closest aides, including Kelly; former chief-of-staff, John Harris; and Springfield millionaire William Cellini.

On Tuesday in a separate case, Kelly pleaded guilty to two counts of mail fraud "as part of a kickback scheme to illegally obtain $8.5 million in work at O'Hare International Airport," the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday in story about his death on the newspaper's Web site.

"At the time, Kelly, 51, said he was under pressure from federal prosecutors to cooperate in their investigation of Blagojevich, but he refused," the Tribune reported."
