thing is we can't just send him to a shit team he doesn't want to go to

if we trade him, he'll have to agree to a long term deal with the team that is getting him. otherwise, why make the investment?

Hurney told Peppers to start soliciting offers, and if he can find a team willing to give them 2 1st round picks, they would listen.

actually we can...Peppers only option is to sit out...which he won't do because A) he won't get paid, B) he wastes a year of his prime, and C) hurt the good part of his reputation

if we hadn't gotten the Gross deal worked out, you would be right, but as of right now the Panthers literally own Julius Peppers...if he and his agent hadn't come out with all their bullshit over the last few weeks (or if they had done it behind closed doors) I'm sure the Panthers would be more willing to accomodate him, or take less for him, or try to get him to a team he wants to play for

But not anymore...tough luck Peppers...he will NEVER get the love from any other city or fanbase that he got from the Panthers...nor will he be able to have a 2.5 sack season and have tons of people defending him as just having a down year...what an idiot...a very wealthy idiot

At least we will have our own top 3 pick in the 2010 draft....cause we are gonna be like the Detriot Lions...(I am hoping for the #1 pick to get Tebow).

^^^true, but in the end, I doubt the panthers want to pay 16+ mil for a guy who probably won't try very hard, when they have other areas of need.

They're probably just trying to over bid and will likely settle for something similar to the Jared Allen deal last year....Unless a current player(s) is involved.

^^lol, is that serious? Tebow will be lucky to go in the 3rd round of the '10 draft.

Tebow is not a First Rounder, unless he shows something spectacular next year.

I am hoping that we get something solid for JP, serious draft picks. I am not ruling out a decent season next year. Granted Jake was iffy at best and hurt in the playoffs we did go 12-4. I am looking for at least a 9/10 win season. Our run game will only get better, allowing us to rely on Jake less.

well, of course we CAN, but it would require a team giving up enough for us to do it. Now, if you couldn't sign him beyond one year, would you trade for him? Would you give up a first, plus some?

[Edited on February 19, 2009 at 5:09 PM. Reason : yeah, and someone is going to be foolish enough to take tebow in the first.]

^^my main point is that the 4 teams that Peppers would play for is not as much of a dealbreaker as it would've been if we didn't get Gross signed...somebody will be prepared to pay him, somebody will think they can make him a 20 sack/ year guy...and it wont be Dallas or either one of the teams in our division...Peppers lost a lot of his bargaining power

I remember someone saying he lost interest in NC and charlotte after staying in SD for the season opener. I could see him ending up in SF (we wont play NFC West next year) if its the whole "cali-style" thing he is after...

The Panthers won't get near what the Chiefs got for Allen last year.

For one thing, Peppers is older and lazier than Jared Allen. Plus, he has restricted his options by requesting to play in a 3-4, and reportedly only listing 4 teams that he would like to play for. At this point the Panthers would be lucky to get anything more than a late first round pick for him.

We definetly need to get a first rounder out of Pep. Throw in a third and maybe something like a fifth or sixth round pick. I think this is going to be around the offer we get for him.

^ Yeah not as good as the Allen deal.

I said that. His buddy from Bailey still says he will end up a cowboy or on the left coast where he fell in love with it when out there. His gf is from either SD or SF area. Either way good riddance.

Well, we are running a 3-4 now with Capers. But, no, probably not. Either way, I'd have a little more respect for a guy who was one of the greatest and (at one time) one of the most beloved players in my franchise's history.

i think if he had expressed all his views about not wanting to play for the panthers behind the scenes to the front office, instead of having his agent talk a bunch of shit in public, the departure would be a lot more cordial

Yeah, he started it.

Seriously, if he hadn't starting pissing and moaning and acting like a diva, I'd be willing to bet that we'd be none too happy about his departure.

but he was a bitch about it. so fuck him. give us some picks. sacks are awesome and all, but it's not like his name was being called all the time last year.

I'm not so sure about that....Allen was/is considered a pretty big liability after getting 3 dui's while in KC. One thing about peppers is you don't have to worry about any off the field stuff, which is pretty valuable these days.

I do agree that he handcuffed himself with the way he handeled it tho.

I think the Panthers can get just as much for Peppers as KC got for Allen. I don't particularly think they will, but they could.

Where Allen's motor is much better, Peppers athleticism is off the charts. I'm sure a team will see what he can do, and think they can "coach him up" to not take plays off (they'll find it's futile, but who cares). Peppers is also a much bigger "name" than Allen was last year.

"* The general consensus at the combine, where virtually the entire league is gathered, is that Julius Peppers is more likely to be back playing for the Panthers next season than he is to be traded as a franchise free agent.

The widely-held thinking in Indy seems to be that no team will be willing to give up what it would take to wrest Peppers away from the Panthers. And there is similar agreement that the Panthers are intent on keeping Peppers and don’t want to trade him.

The bottom line is the leverage of the situation changed dramatically, switching to the Panthers’ favor, on Thursday when Peppers was franchised."

yes, of course we have the leverage, but there is not way in my right mind that i would pay $16.7 million dollars for one year, only to wind up in the same situation next year.

over $1million a game to a guy? that i just insanity

i would take all these reports with a grain of salt until the deadline passes. If there really is a chemistry issue with peppers then we will still unload him in order to avoid it - even if we dont get what we think we should out of it initially (e.g. Kris Jenkins). Just freeing up his cap space would allow us to bring in a cheaper replacement and possible help at another position.

a big dilemma with peppers is the cap space that he's taking up hampers us from being players in the free agent market to sure up our D. I think how free agency plays out in the next few months will show the panthers hand....If they pick up some players in FA, they expect to trade him and shed his cap number. If not, they're probably planning on riding it out next year unless they get an offer that's too good to be true.

"With more teams going to 3-4 defenses, the demand for nose tackles and 3-4 defensive ends will be high. Because of that, current Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty will have plenty of suitors. Chargers defensive end Igor Olshansky and Cardinals defensive end Antonio Smith also figure to do well on the market."

Interesting that Clayton makes the point about high demand for 3-4 DEs, but makes no mention of Pep being moved at all....

I cant help but feel like either way the Pep situation turns out -it will hurt our team....

Peppers doesn't want to be a DE for a 3-4 team, he wants to move to OLB so he can just rush the passer.

I wonder what kind of draft pick we can get for Ken Lucas. It is rumored that a upcoming trade was the reason he wasn't released today. Im thinking a middle round pick.

Hackett's problem had nothing to do with Jake, and everything to do with him being extremely injury-prone

so

Lucas was going to get traded to the Lions, but he nixed the deal...so if he isn't traded somewhere else we'll probably cut him today

Damion Lewis is back and restructured his contract to save us some money

Jake is expected to restructure his contract to save up some cap room

There was a rumor that the Eagles would trade Lito Sheppard and a 1st round pick (late round pick) for Pep...I don't know if I like that deal, but it at least shows there are some possible suitors for Pep

Patrick Jeffers was awesome before microfracture surgery.

Also Mark Carrier was pretty solid but I can't remember if he was a FA or a expansion draft pick.
