Fuck that, I'm going to hire someone with experience. Last thing I want is a photography student who has never done candid stuff like a wedding before missing shots. Not saying all photography students take bad photos but there's a reason they're students and not yet considered professionals. Maybe I'll just get my grandmother to pay for the photography as a gift

haha you'd be surprised how capable students are, and I'm not talking freshman...

But ya, shits expensive and so easy to get in to so you really have to be critical

^^What she said.

I've already got the photography/budget part figured out: mom's a member of a scrapbooking/photo board, and has lots and lots of e-friends she hasn't met, or has met once - i.e., they want to see each other an awful lot.

I'll fly one of them out and put them up. Basically, a paid vacation. Work 1-2 days at the beginning, and then hang out with mom.
Some of these women...mom shows me their albums, and I'll go "Oh! I want HER to do my photography! No, her! Or maybe her!"

And they know this

One reason for this is that they prioritize like I do, and have similar taste. They abhor some of the same cheesy shit that I do

I always feel bad for people you see on the news who hire a photographer that cons them entirely and doesn't even take the photos

i think it's especially important to be happy with something such as wedding pictures. spend the extra money. you don't want to get a year or two down the road and have to look at god-awful pictures like these.

haha it's definitely worth the money but there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what the freak they are doing. And for someone on a tight budget I don't think a student is a bad idea.

Though we plan on budgeting for a nice photographer...since it is a once in a lifetime thing. (hopefully)

The vast majority of these photographers are complete bullshit. I saw about 1 or 2 photos here that meet professional quality standards. Check out nicovision or sabawa for some guys that can take cool photos.

Then again check out Terry Richardson, he's achieved world fame with arguably shittier photos than anything posted here. Absolutely sickening. http://www.terryrichardson.com <-- a three year old could do this garbage with a drug store disposable camera. BARF

I'll have to find the link to a wedding photography business of two past graduates at RCC that started their own wedding/portrait business up in NYC that's really successful. They really do a great job of what our professors have shown us.

There's a few wedding photographers that I know that think $20,000 is too cheap to cover a wedding... But it again depends on the market and clients. I'd say a good budget wedding photographer should cost about 3-5k for the professional results that you'd expect for this area. Anything less and you'll be risking for the phrase "you'd get what you paid for" from your spouse and others. A good healthy budget would be 5-15k.

Curtis is pretty good, a little weird, but a cool guy. Most of his photos are decently strong, but then there are some in his portfolio that's just awful. He is definitely much better than most listed in this thread and he is good at what he does, but he has a lot of room to improve.

But yes, I too hate his site and he's had that site forever. He still needs to learn the business side of photography. He's been playing with photography for quite a while though. He still strikes me as an assistant, rather than a full blown photographer, mainly because he lacks the confidence when shooting.

AT MY WEDDING, INSTEAD OF HAVING A TILT-SHIFT CRAZED PHOTOGRAPHER I'M GOING TO HIRE SOMEONE TO MAKE MINIATURES OF THE EVENT AND PHOTOGRAPH THEM

that's right... model railroad wedding

we don't even need to have the actual wedding

Or you can just have someone use an ACTUAL tilt shift lens instead of a lensbaby or tired photoshop techniques.

You know, someone who knows what they are doing.

ok, so i dont really have that much of a problem with "the tilt"(..sorta like a lens flare. used properly and moderately (or sparsely) it can be a cool effect )

but GEEEEEZ....9 out of those 12 pictures have it.

its so distracting!

haha I agree, I don't hate the tilt but it can make the stomach sick when they use it SO much. After that slap in the face in the SLR thread I focused more on keeping things straight so I don't get too out of hand.

Eddie stokes is charging a small amount for a SHIT TON of work. I wonder if he realizes it. He's offering a bridal or engagement shoot with cd, AND unlimited time wedding coverage with dvd, $100 credit towards photos as well as the time to INDIVIDUALLY edit each picture for $1650. That's insane to me.
