Hey Wx nerds, found this the other day, whatcha think?

Quote :
"If you grow up in England, as I did, a few items of unquestioned wisdom are passed down to you from the preceding generation. Along with stories of a plucky island race with a glorious past and the benefits of drinking unbelievable quantities of milky tea, you will be told that England is blessed with its pleasant climate courtesy of the Gulf Stream, that huge current of warm water that flows northeast across the Atlantic from its source in the Gulf of Mexico. That the Gulf Stream is responsible for Europe's mild winters is widely known and accepted, but, as I will show, it is nothing more than the earth-science equivalent of an urban legend."

I heard thunder at least 3 times yesterday while in Clayton. Looks like they/you folks will be getting that snow in about 10 days.

You know, the one a few months after Hurricane Hugo.
But seriously, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_blizzard_of_1996? That'd be my guess. *shrug*

The 2000 snow was close to 20 inches in Raleigh. My family had just moved a week prior to Coral Springs Florida, so we missed it all. We got a pretty good snow in 2004 too, the day after Christmas. 6-9 inches from Raleigh and East. My Dad wrecked my 4Runner during that event.

That was my senior year in high school so since they had already rented the time at the civic center they kept our graduation on time while all of the other kiddies had to stay the extra two weeks to make up the snow days!

I also recommend skydiving after a decent snow event on an overcast day. Sure, it was cold as hell but oh wow was it beautiful!

Cary High represent!

Asheville is looking like a 50/50 chance of snow/rain later on in the week but that's just after a quick check on weather underground.

just got back from the ohio/wv border near PA. saw plenty of snow on the way there and back... 3 inches fell while i was there and it was COLD COLD COLD this morning when i left at 9AM.

amazingly, all the roads up there get plowed and salted really quickly... lots different than snow down here.

^^I marvel at that too.

I'm in chicago right now. The roads are clear, and almost completely dry...but there's a foot of fresh snow elsewhere. I'm like

Yeah not worth the money to buy all those plows for the chance of getting snow once the whole season. Some seasons we go without a trace.

I think it helps that the locals in the North who have trucks also slap a snowplow right on the front.

lol, what's so amazing about it people? We live in the 21st century; you'd think that after putting men on the moon we'd know how to handle frozen water falling from the sky.

It's just a matter of is it cost effective to have equipment to deal with it quickly.

our office meteorologist says a "trace" at best because the system is coming from the mountains, and the mountains will likely take away most of the moisture and our snow chances.

whatever that means

salt isn't too great for your paint either. In CO, they use like a sand/salt mixture which is much better on the paint. Makes the cars much dirtier but its worthless worrying about it when your car get burried in snow every other day anyways :-P

I'm pretty sure everyone in this thread is aware that salt is all kinds of bad for cars, since its corrosive.

If you maintain a nice protective coating of wax on your paint salt should notbe much of a concern.

I grew up in the Northeast, I've seen my fair share of rusted out shitboxes.
