so mcdanger if someone came into a restaurant/bar that you were at, sat near you and just proceeded to take the nastiest shit possible on the table and you had to smell it all night, the smell got in your clothes and nose and for all you know the fecal form bacteria is giving you some sort of disease, you would be OK with this? Because shitting is legal. And fuck the government for telling me I can't take a shit on the table. And fuck you for being such a pussy that you can't take a little shit smell when you are out eating with your family.

Also, watching you get worked into a lather on a message board has been fantastic fun. I will be sad when you die of cancer because who else would get so worked up so quick.

Quote :
"^yeah that last comment seems analogous to

"YOU DON'T LIKE OUR PRESIDENT? WELL MOVE TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY""

It's analogous but federal laws and state laws are vastly different things. I'm much in favor of a smaller less prominent federal government for exactly this reason. Do you understand at all?

Quote :
"Almost anybody with a college degree is practically guaranteed a smoke-free work environment, but those lowly waitresses need to suck it up or get another job."

The crazy thing is, as little as 15 years ago this wasn't always true either.

Quote :
"Sometimes when we go out and have fun we accept reasonable risks. "

To echo your absurd arguments, then no one should be driving down to these establishments. This law is about practicality and common sense. There is simply no reason to subject such a large majority of the population to the ill effects of the minority when the minority is only in the slightest of inconvenienced by this new law.

Quote :
"Yes and when they DO it's immediate and typically violent. "

No it isn't. Do you know what alcohol is? Even with the drunkest of fools, violence occurs in infrequently.

Quote :
"If you ban smoking in bars and restaurants, you make a job marginally safer but at what cost to personal liberty?"

At no cost to personal liberty. You're still free to engage in your right to poison yourself, only now you're not poisoning other people while you do it.

Quote :
"If it were really that dangerous that people would have to stop working there due to poor health conditions, wouldn't that drive the price of waiting staff up?"
Again, there are only so many jobs that pay as well as server jobs for the amount of education required to go around. For someone as smart as you think you are, you're failing at the economic aspects of this argument.

It would be interesting to see the effects of reversing this law after it is allowed to stand for a few years. I'd imagine one or two would allow it, then the other bar owners would be faced with the same dilemma where they fear (irrationally or not) that they are losing customers to the smoking bars and would begin allowing it. Many places that are doing plenty of business without smoking would remain as such.

Honestly though, I envision the places where the minority don't smoke are the shittier bars that should probably be allowed to have an exemption provided every employee there is also a smoker.

Or I could read the vast majority of research on this subject published in the last twenty years.

There's no way you could say second-hand smoke isn't harmful.

No need to laugh at me. I'm aware that lots of servers smoke. Just because a majority of them smoke, it doesn't mean I should be allowed to walk up in their workplace and start blowing toxins all over the place.

Quote :

You've asked this a few times, and I'm no sure what to tell you.

I mean, you claim that everybody at your work smokes, and I guess one of the benefits of that job may be that since you all smoke, you can smoke on the clock...but what if one of you quits smoking because they get pregnant or develop bad emphysema?

I had hoped places like you describe could get exempted by becoming membership-only clubs.

^^^^ well its whino's like you who think they can tell private business owners what to do by crying to the government. If enough people would have stopped patronizing bars known for their smoky environment; more bars would have took initiative on their own to ban smoking.

I disagree with this bill solely on the government intrusion standpoint. Today its telling business owners "No Smoking" on your property. What is next.

Sure maybe for teh restaurants that are also bars Sammy's, Ruckus, or EV from a health and food perspective the law is ok. For places like the Goat or Buckhead this is just dumb.

Dunno about emphysema, but there are no longer any female employees where I work.

The only places that fall into the category of "private club" under this law's definition are bars that make a significant portion of their profits through cigar sales and truly member-owned organizations like country clubs and lodges.

For the people, by the people. Look, it's just a state law, I'd invite the owners that don't like having their liberty to do business on the terms set by the state to happily get the fuck out.

Quote :
"If enough people would have stopped patronizing bars known for their smoky environment; more bars would have took initiative on their own to ban smoking."

Yeah, you're right, lemme not go to this bar because its smoky, where should we go? Fuck, guess I'll go back home.

They can't serve food that has been sitting at room temp for too long...wait, we already have that one. Umm, they can't serve alcohol to minors. Fuck, got that one too. Shit, I guess we've legislated everything bar/restaurant owners could possibly do, the only thing left is for them to just shut down and pick another line of work. Oh those evil laws.

I do not even smoke.

So would it be acceptable for Lord KilJadn if they has a "smoking bar permit" that a drinking only bar like "the Goat" had to pay extra for to allow smoking? Sure the state could limit the permits that give out per year. Is this still unacceptable or do you demand that all bar patrons kick the habit simply cause its bad for their health.

I'll kill a snitch. I'm not saying I have, and I'm not saying I haven't.

There's nothing I can say in this thread that hasn't been said in similar threads a thousand times. The fact is, at midnight this place turned into Soviet Russia, and freedom is dead.

Might as well embrace it and start campaigning to ban salt, red meat, and other unhealthy products, as well as products that lead to bad smells in public places, like beans and manual labor.

I get it. The people you work with have indicated they are going to push the issue until they get cited. Tell me where that is, I'll make a special trip there and start reporting the fuck out of you people.

Honestly, if I roll in a joint and it's smoky I'll probably go to the next joint. If I go to the next joint and it's the same, I'll report both of them.

Initially there was talk of doing that, but that got nixed fairly quickly. In fact, a couple of the guys are even trying to quit starting today. I don't smoke, so it doesn't matter to me one way or another.

However, since we debated it, I'm sure there are places that have had the same debate and have chosen not to comply. Granted, you can report them, but with no money to enforce the law and two citations required before even a tiny fine can be issued, are you going to be that guy who stakes out a place just to report them for smoking instead of just going somewhere where people don't?

If you're not going to be that guy, and go to places that had previously decided to become non-smoking, what's the problem with letting the business owner decide, especially if it's by a vote of the patrons? Ole Time BBQ allowed smoking for a very long time, but the owner took a poll and bent to the will of his customers.

It depends. I'm on the coast now, not in Raleigh. I discovered a nice breakfast joint here in Emerald Isle a few weeks ago but they allow smoking. Fortunately, the two times I've been so far it wasn't so crowded that the smoke wasn't overly annoying. I rode by yesterday on my way to check the mail and it was packed. If I go tomorrow and it's packed and smelling like smoke, then it will be temporarily off my list. There is one other option (that I'm aware of at the moment) for breakfast that I'd try. If they both allowed smoking then I have a 15 minute trip to Swansboro and an 45 minute wait at Yanas if I want a good breakfast. Now, I'm not entitled to breakfast. But if this law exists, I'd be tempted to make a phone call if it was being openly flouted.

As it is, I suspect they'll comply and it won't be a problem anyway, because not all humans are shitty assholes, unlike a large majority of the smokers.

I know plenty of smokers who are assholes, but most of the time when you go to a downtown place with blended demographics on a Friday night, the inconsiderate assholes are just as, if not more often non-smokers.
