Not a big figure skater fan, so I didn't watch last night. I had a passing interest in who won gold though, so I went to espn this morning:
Quote : | "Then, the announcer introduced Russian silver medalist Evgeni Plushenko, who jokingly stepped onto the podium's upper-most level, where American Evan Lysacek was to receive his gold medal, before stepping to his rightful position.
Or maybe it wasn't such a joke.
"I was positive I had won," said Plushenko, the 2006 gold medalist. "But I suppose Evan needs a gold medal more than I do because I already have one."" |

His rotational axis was bad on all of his jumps and he almost spun out of two of them. Evan didn't do a quad but he was much cleaner and his footwork was better.

Why can't they actually show events? The down hill skiing events were in tape delay and they only showed a few runs on the bobsled track. Some how they did manage to spend an hour interviewing male figure skaters. Put the bobsleds on speed channel. 2/20/2010 11:47:30 PM |

Yeah...I'm gonna agree with South Korea getting screwed on that one. Wonder what there options are of protesting and actually getting that Gold back. Either way...I highly enjoy short track skating. 2/24/2010 10:20:52 PM |

^ Nothing they can do at all, decision is final.
and they didn't get screwed, thats just how speed skating works.
Though Im sure that won't stop the inevetable national outrage and death threats mailed to the IOC 2/24/2010 10:23:56 PM |

I love the olympics but week 2 has been really weak..
Seems like all of the big time stuff was all within the first week.. now we are subjected to watch meaningless figures skaters and ice dancers for half of the coverage.
About the only things I care about the rest of the olympics is USA hockey and apolo tomorrow night
****SPOILER*****
Just saw we won gold and silver in nordic combined.. that is freakin huge for our push to finally win the medal count

this canadian figure skater looks pretty good......shes prolly 15 or something, but she still looks pretty good 2/25/2010 11:38:51 PM |

According to the website, she's actually 24.
I feel almost bad for Mirai Nagasu: as a young 16 year old, first time in an international competition, being forced to skate in the same group after world record breaking performances by the titans of your field. Then again, I suppose that leaves her with no pressure to perform. 2/25/2010 11:50:28 PM |
mambagrl Suspended 4724 Posts user info edit post |
I thought the Canadian tripped on one of her moves. It seems like Rochette got 3rd because her mom died. Nagasu was much more crisp. Whatever though. Thats why its figure skating and much more of an american idol/dancing with the stars rating getter than an actual competitive athletic event. 2/26/2010 12:01:26 AM |

^^ don't feel bad for her
a lot of skaters don't do that well at the Olympics when they're so young
Tara Lipinski is probably the most obvious exception in recent history
but it's more common for them to be at least 17 or 18
Mirai will definitely have a chance at a medal in Soichi if she continues to skate well 2/26/2010 7:43:05 AM |

Thats the real kicker. If the guy who won wasn't canadian and didn't do something worse to keep the korean guy from winning, it wouldn't be as bad....but that was more of a "foul" than what Ohno did. There was clearly no intent to knock the canadian down and i've seen much worse allowed in that sport. Ohno was probably cost gold because of something worse against him earlier in these games and he's been taken out of medals in previous games for worse against him.

That pisses me off what happened last night to Apollo. There should at least be a panel of judges to make that call, not one guy who is biased towards his own country. 2/27/2010 11:06:09 AM |
