I've got some 10-12" tomato plants I was ready to plant outside this week since its been sunny and warm for the last couple weeks and it was the same in projected forecasts, even though the last frost date is May 5. Yesterday we had a freak snowstorm that left 12" of snow on my deck and about 7 on the ground Its supposed to be 70° again by this weekend, but I have to leave town for a week 4/28/2010 2:28:12 PM |

PS what do you think of 2 scoops of worm compost with each plant?? that's what I thought vermiculite was but now I know I'm wrong. The tomatoes are sooooo green now, and the new leaves on the squash are green so I think it's doing good!! ] 4/28/2010 5:23:49 PM |

I want the kind that you can just fill up with water and leave it alone for awhile.
My violet has outgrown it's current container

Planted some dahlia bulbs the other night, and have gotten a few more herbs going in pots. Lettuce in planter is doing fantastically well, lettuce in ground decently. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are adjusting well to new in-ground homes (or large pots in the case of 3 of the peppers) but I think I may need to fertilize to give them a "grow, bitches!" kick. I've seen a couple of buds on the tomatoes, but have pinched them off so far since it's so soon after transplant and they're little guys yet (not even 1' tall).
To create the in-ground bed, I tilled together some of that miracle-gro enhanced soil with the soil that was already in the ground (somewhat high clay content) and a little mushroom compost. Do I need to hold off on any fertilizing right now because of what's in the soil, or since it's a mix, can I fertilize weakly?
Also--to anyone growing strawberries--are there any special preparations I need to be doing? We got a strawberry plant which had a few tiny berries on it when we brought it home, which were promptly eaten by a bird or squirrel. That was more than two weeks ago and I've seen nary a flower since, though the foliage is growing quite nicely. What gives?

Thanks Quinn! I live in Charleston, SC. I wish I'd started my seeds sooner, especially the "spring" veggies. I just know they're gonna die soon. Like Raleigh we had 2 weeks of absolutely gorgeous weather, and now it's hot and muggy. Spring is over!
My tomatoes and squash are doing GREAT!!! every day it looks like they're bigger than before. especially the squash is just growing like CRAZY!

my squash was doing awesome in its container, just growing like crazy. I don't know how tall it is now but probably ~20". It has a bunch of buds and one of them was fully open into a bright yellow/orange flower yesterday before work when I was watering! Then I came home from work and the entire plant wasn't looking too hot and the flower was totally wilted! wtf 5/4/2010 9:08:11 AM |

We got everything planted and the irrigation system I set up is working PERFECT. We have 3 green pepper plants that aren't going to make it. I think we should have left them in the flats a little longer. Fortunately we have 6 more still in the flats. We have the WORST luck with green peppers for some reason. 5/7/2010 8:28:56 AM |

I'm HORRIBLE. I just got my cukes in the ground yesterday (well, all except the ones I decided I wasn't going to bother with. If anyone wants them, and two broccoli plants that aren't doing so hot, or some basil, and maybe some sage, let me know.)
I'm really glad I didn't put my plants in the ground before we left for vacation, but really sad that I missed out on being able to put them in when we should have (which would have been while we were gone).
Then I was sick last week, and didn't get anything planted
So I'm doing all this work in hopes that Z or elise will do the easy part of what I'd be doing if I were going to be here this summer (namely, eating and drying). I just can't stop taking care of these plants. I'm also hoping that, because Z LOVES pickles so much, that he'll feel up to attempting to putting these cukes to good use 5/8/2010 11:13:24 AM |

Do I need to be "pollinating" our squash plants at all or something? I was reading online and this site was saying that any flowering vegetable plant needs to be "hand-pollinated" if you are growing it in a pot. I had never heard of that before, but I am also a n00b gardener. We just have our squash in 12" containers outside and are watering, fertilized, and are letting them do their thing. 5/12/2010 8:59:34 AM |
elkaybie All American 39626 Posts user info edit post |
^I read that too, but I also read that squash is a resilient vegetable that you can let do its own thing aside from making sure it has enough water (no need to fertilize or pollinate). The only veggie, that I was attempting this year, in my research that suggested across the board to hand pollinate if growing in pots was cucumbers. But take my advice w/ a grain of salt...I'm pretty new with this whole thing.
I was coming in here to post that I've got 3 flowers on my zucchini squash right now, and about 7 flowers on my tomato plant and two starting to fruit
Lost a jalapeno plant, but it was one of the smaller ones that I didn't think would make it anyway. The others' were too strong and I figured they'd overpower its root system. 5/12/2010 10:36:13 AM |

The tomatoes are doing great so far, as are some of the peppers, squash, and cucumbers. Already have had several casualties though, but they were really small when we planted them so that is to be expected.
Now I'm just concerned because we are going out of town for a week next week and our neighbor is going to be watering them. Hopefully she doesn't over/under water. Best case scenario would be if it rained all damn week, lol 5/12/2010 11:00:16 AM |

Finally have our first baby tomato of the season (on one of the sungolds) and the others are flowering. Red bell and golden cayenne peppers are starting to set fruit too. And we have a volunteer tomato that I'm kind of excited about--since we didn't seed them and grew in pots on the deck last year, the only way it could have sprung up is if it came from a tomato that fell off the plant or got tossed off the side of the deck due to bird/bug damage, decomposed in the grass, and somehow survived our tilling up of that patch of earth to create the garden. Resilient little guy--I'm hoping it's going to be a grape tomato as that plant was very productive.
Still no flowers whatsoever on our container strawberry, though it seems to be producing leaves vigorously and looks generally healthy. Is there anything I can do to kick-start that guy into production? I was hoping for at least a few fresh strawberries... 5/14/2010 2:43:16 PM |

I won't even mention how lazy I've been in my gardening pursuits this spring- I still have my winter gardens in between getting accepted to nursing school, moving the bike co-op, and raising baby chicks.
Luckily, though, I thought to seed out my summer stuff back in early March, so everything is ready to go. I just need to get motivated, re-dress the soil, and plant.
Can't wait for the chicken manure I'll have later this summer after it ages- it's going to be awesome for the garden!
I'm also going to put in a 4th bed on the side of the house, for asparagus for next year, and melon, if these are compatible. 5/14/2010 5:16:38 PM |

question about container gardening and soil compaction
I know it's inevitable that the soil is going to settle, but does this seem really low to anybody else?
should I add more soil to get it back toward the top of the pot or just leave it along?

^ As long as your plants aren't falling over and the roots aren't exposed, those look fine for now. You could add a few more inches when they get bigger. 5/15/2010 11:34:42 AM |
