My sister trained her Cairn to do it. She sometimes rings it just to go outside, but it's pretty easy to tell from her body language if she really has to go or just wants to play.

Anyone tried one of these? I'm tempted to get one to try to reduce the amount of hair all over my house, but $45 is pretty steep for a fancy comb.

^ My parents use that style of comb on their Spitz and it's great for when she's blowing coat and they want to brush out her undercoat. They go on sale pretty regularly at Target and Petsmart so I would wait until it's on sale to buy it.
We took Eva to her first puppy class at Petsmart. It was supposed to be three dogs in the class but one didn't show up. So it was her and this cute German Shepherd.
So far Eva is the smartest one in the class Turned out I had already started training her a little on the two main things for the first class, sit and leave it. Jackie said she was impressed that Eva had already started generalizing leave it, which I totally didn't do on my own so she must be a pretty smart dog ![](images/beatup.gif)

^^^ The best investment I have ever made was the $4 knock off wal mart version of the deshedding brush. The $20-40 ones were beside it and I got the $4 one and it works wonders. I have a long hair Siberian husky who pretty much sheds non stop and that brush takes off so much hair its not funny. 3/12/2011 6:11:10 PM

THEY RULE. they do go on sale often and they have the knockoffs at target. BEST investment ever. they work so so so so well. for cats and dogs (at least in my experience anyway)
but i got mine on amazon for like $10. so watch for the sales. 3/12/2011 6:21:31 PM

kitty has to go to the vet ![](images/frown.gif)
kitty has gained like 2-3 lbs in a very short period of time. i don't know why, she isn't eating more. she has always been slightly overweight and lazy BUT i mean 2-3lbs is a pretty significant weight gain when you only weigh 12lbs to begin with. so i'm taking her ass in. any thoughts on what it could be?
i hope she doesn't have like, thyroid cancer or something. or diabetes. i guess diabetes is better than cancer but not really. i changed her food recently, she LOVES IT...maybe she is eating more than usual. i don't really moniter it i free feed her (whoops). i always have but maybe this is like really fatty food and she is just chowing down on it or something. she is 5 years old. 3/27/2011 8:58:18 PM

If you changed foods it's likely that is the culprit.
When I changed my cats to a food with no corn, wheat, or soy, the idea was they would lose weight and their dandruff. Well the dandruff is gone but they like the food so much they eat the hell out of it and whine incessantly for more so now they're fatties. Oops ![](images/beatup.gif) 3/28/2011 9:10:37 AM

My baby, a 16 lb tabby 7 years old, is currently at the vet getting tests done. The vet thinks he's in the early stages of heart disease, that he has feline hypertropic cardiomyopathy, and that it might be treatable with meds.
He's my little guy and I can't believe he's going through this. I only took him to the vet because he had diarrhea. ![](images/frown.gif) 3/28/2011 12:48:05 PM

wet food. give your cat 1-2 cans of wet food a week. you can mix up half a can in with a little bit of dry food a couple of times throughout the week. my vet told me to do that with my cat (he's a fatty) because cats are carnivores so feeding them the carb-heavy dry foods only makes them over weight. 3/28/2011 12:59:09 PM

I tried feeding my cats canned food and they will not eat it. They act like it's poison. I've tried different brands, flavors, mixing with their dry food, to no avail. Hell they're not even interested in people food most days. They're weird ![](images/crack.gif) 3/28/2011 1:38:59 PM

^^ does that actually work? I don't like feeding wet food because it's worse on the teeth, but if it'll help my cat not be such a lard I would consider it.
I have heard of using fresh food rather than cat food, but not using canned cat food. I talked to a lady who owns a cat rescue facility and she basically said once they are ever starved and that mindset sets in they will be fat forever because they will constantly eat as much as they can.

I heard it's a myth about canned food causing bad teeth. Like if you only feed canned maybe, but as part of an overall diet is fine. If my cats weren't such freaks I'd consider putting them on a raw diet. But they won't even touched cooked meat. 3/28/2011 3:37:43 PM

omg! i never saw this. thanks for the tip. my cat LOVES wet food but i rarely give it to her because i figured it was worse for her. i mean i put no thought into drawing that conclusion other than she thinks it is a gourmet treat so i figured it was like, junk food for people. but that is totally good to know. she'll love having wet food added to the dry food more often than i've been giving it to her.

Ok guys, I need your help. My little dog, lovingly referred to as Asshole, hasn't eaten in almost a week. I went to Raleigh last weekend and he wouldn't eat, I thought it was excitement. He MAY have eaten my mother's dog food and I know she gave him a pig's ear, which he's never had before.
He has no interest in food, treats, I even poured tuna juice on his kibble and he just licked the tuna off the food then spit it out. After he ate the tuna he had diarrhea and there was like a greenish liquid in it? I haven't seen any other poop though.
He's also acting way lethargic. Sleeping all the time, not playing with the pup, chasing after the ball, nothing. He's only 6.
What can I do to get him to eat? Canned food? Chicken & rice?
I felt his stomach and there's no protrusion and he didn't scream or whimper as if in pain. What's going onnnnnnnnnnn?? 4/29/2011 11:01:12 AM
|
wolfpackgrrr All American 39759 Posts user info edit post |
^ personally I'd take him to the vet. A week without eating is a bad sign. Does he have any sort of treat he'd kill for? My dog it's jerky. Try giving him a tiny bit of whatever his special treat us and see if he even reacts to that.
Our dog graduates from puppy school tomorrow! ![](images/biggrin.gif) 4/29/2011 11:14:22 AM

Ummmmmmmmm well I gave him some puppy free time and he's fucking eating her food. It will give him diarrhea but this is the most he's eaten in a looooooooooooooong time.
Maybe the puppy is stressing him out........ I can't believe it though, he wouldn't touch food and JUST NOW he decides to eat. I didn't think it was it cause we separate them when they eat but he's eating now. 4/29/2011 11:17:58 AM

Why does the puppy food cause a reaction? Allergies? It might be a good idea to get them both on the same type of food if he's doing that. But really I think you should talk to a vet. 4/29/2011 11:29:09 AM
|
Kiwi All American 38546 Posts user info edit post |
I think it's allergies. He got diarrhea last time he ate her food and most of his entire life when it was high quality food. I did some research and papillons can have terrible reactions to high quality food so I switched him to beneful and he never had an issue since.
I don't want them on the same food because I'd RATHER feed them quality food but since he can't handle I don't want the golden to eat crappy food just so they eat the same thing. Besides, goldens need to eat at specific times of day or they will overeat (she will eat ANYTHING) so separating them isn't an issue.
I've called the vet, we'll see what's up. 4/29/2011 11:31:48 AM
