Current me still mostly agrees with 2.5 years ago me. The funny thing is that, at that point, I was living in suburban Durham, and I'm now living near downtown Richmond, and within walking distance to said items, and I don't regret the decision one bit despite having gone from 1400sf, 3 bedroom 2 bath, 2-car garage, yard to an 845sf 2-bedroom 1 bath with no greenspace and no off-street parking. Still currently renting while the wife is in grad school, but I'm interested in buying around here when we do.

I've even started thinking a yard is overrated when you live in a neighborhood with a whole bunch of little parks (and a ~15 minute walk from a huge one). Enough space to grow a garden is a priority but it can be a container garden if need be.

I grew up in North Raleigh and it was a great place for families. I lived downtown for 6 years or so and had my fill and now I'm back in the North Raleigh area. While the bars in the true North area are filled with neighborhood drunks and cougars, the North Hills area is great. I'm about to get a place at Park and Market and look forward to being able to walk to three great bars (Fox, Yardhouse, WOB), bowling alley, movie theater, target, stores/restaurants, and be living right above a 24 hour Harris Teeter. NH has lots of events, especially in the summer. If I want to go downtown a cab isn't that bad from that area either.

North Raleigh doesn't suck, it's just different. I think it starts to appeal to people when they're young professionals in their late 20s or early 30s because of the proximity to RTP via 540 and it's certainly great for young families.

Except the tech companies moving in now are moving to downtown, not RTP.

And while NH does have a lot of events, outside of the farmer's market, they're events designed for people in their 40s-50s.

There are a few tech companies moving downtown. there are tons of them in RTP, among many other industries out there.

Also, not saying that downtown is further from RTP, I used to hit Wade and it was actually closer than where I am right now in NR but as far as purchasing power you can get so much more of a house in North Raleigh.

As far as North Hills events being for people in their 40s and 50s, I disagree. Summer Beach Music was loaded with hot girls as are WOB and Yardhouse on weekends. If you haven't been to NH on a weekend in a while you should check it out again, that shit has blown up. I don't know what many of you would consider Big Boss Brewery as far as location (I'd say Midtown) but that's not far either and they have young people there and events (like their Octoberfest). Lynwood is the other decent bar in NR outside of North Hills for finding a youngish crowd.

I quit drinking this year, but still prefer to live in places with shit to do and good food. A coworker of mine was commuting > 1.5 hours a day from Orange County to West LA. I was like, "you could spend twice as much on housing and take a walk with your daughter on the beach after your 10 minute commute". He downsized and moved 2 weeks later. Living close to where you work is probably my greatest preference.

I like living in 800 sq ft--makes you space efficient and if I was still in Raleigh would consider doing that and paying nothing for housing.

I live in North Raleigh too. Near 540 and Creedmoor. If I need to get to Brier Creek, I just hop on 540. My neighborhood is mostly older retirees but now that I have a kid, I don't need to be in a party environment. I live right near a couple grocery stores and pretty good restaurants. Poppyseed Market, Neomonde and Chow are a couple places I like. It doesn't take too long to get downtown either.

google says Creedmoor at 540 is almost the exact same distance from downtown Durham to downtown Raleigh, so if you are north of 540 you are slightly closer to Durham and south of 540 slightly closer to downtown. I'd prefer the drive to downtown Durham though, less traffic and fewer stoplights.
