^ Yep. Seems some folks are paranoid of even the casual radio geek. Sad thing is that I know of a lot of folks that would go in a heartbeat if scanners were allowed. Yea I really enjoy going to Langley because I usually sit near a real radio geek who has a portable setup in his Radio Flyer wagon. When I'm near him I get to listen to all of the air ops channels, so it makes the experience so much cooler. Been busy at work so I have not had a chance to update this thread as I should have.
Just finished up rewiring this install in a DPD "Motor" Squad Car..when I first got it several of the devices were haphazardly installed in the vehicle..now it is more organized and more safe for the driver:
On top is the Radar unit. Then the Durham Motorola XTL 5000 with W7 Control Head. Then the Code 3 Siren/Light Control Box. Below and to the left of the Code 3 box is the Radar remote control. There is now wire ties around the wiring behind/under the code 3 box and it is organzied and another plate covering up the area behind the code box to keep the wiring safe.

^Durham has been testing both the Caprice and Charger to figure out which to go with: http://durhamnc.gov/ich/op/DPD/Documents/Police%20Car%20Possbilities.pdf Hence the "T-1" and "T-2" on the 2 squad cars pictured above for "Test 1" and "Test 2".

Due to the panoramic nature of the pic I am just linking to the image rather than embedding it. 3 dark gray monitors on the left side of the pic show us microwave connectivity... Monitor in middle with blue background shows us entire system connectivity through our master site location...beside that the monitor with the "green tic-tac-toe" display is our Zone Watch screen which shows current system activity...to the right of that couple of more screens that show current system activity and lists of specific call activity such as radio->radio private calls, radios not allowed on the system, etc. 3 screens in the bottom right of the pic belong to our "Wizard of Oz" SysAdmin Homer...he also has a mirror display of what Durham 911 has dispatch wise in the far bottom right... you mentioned before that decoding the alpha pager traffic is illegal... i thought that was only for commercial paging networks.
don't the wake county alpha pagers just use what used to be TAC 2? i don't see what's illegal about decoding FLEX traffic over a public VHF frequency... 8/21/2012 2:27:08 PM |

Decoding any "common carrier" pager traffic is (according to the letter of the ECPA law) illegal ...that part is correct.

That is where the grey area lies...no one has gone to court to force a decision of whether or not Public Safety paging falls under "common carrier" rules...most folks are of the opinion that if you decide to decode public safety paging keep it to yourself and don't make yourself be the "example case" for public safety to sue for intercepting their pages...just don't be stupid and don't rub what you are doing in their faces and you probably won't have too many issues.
Wake County Locution uses the Old Wake Sheriff Ch 2 VHF Frequency of 155.520Mhz due to the fact this frequency was already designed for county wide coverage.
Of course the question can be asked "Why does Wake County not encrypt the alpha pages over the air?" The answer is simple: there are too many volunteer and small agency FD/EMS users that use older alphanumeric pagers. Not worth the headache to make the change.

Cmon now Evan...it ain't that easy
You are stuck tethered to a laptop in your linked approach. Hardly a "mobile" solution. And as you say yourself above this approach takes a lot of setup time... From the page you link:

So not really a "P25-capable trunk tracking scanner". More like a computer tethered to a receiver that monitors control channel data. I will keep my small compact Uniden BCD396XT and my Motorola XTS5K:
Both of which I can wear on my hip with no computer tethering necessary.
But I do appreciate all of the hard work folks are putting into SDRs. We at RR.com have a forum devoted just to this topic: http://forums.radioreference.com/digital-voice-formats/ And an open source software package called "DSD" that can decode formats such as EDACS Provoice (Which Johnston County uses heavily): http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/DSD

i don't want to have to carry around *anything* extra with me (at least, when i'm not on duty... stupid damn XTS5000 and alpha pager...) is what i'm going for.
this + an SDR + some gnuradio coding == a system which records every transmission on every TG then write a web service that provides this audio/the metadata from the control channel then write an app/web frontend to access this information and "play" it in close-to-realtime like this: http://scanner.rachelbythebay.com/main
it's also really sad that decoding paging protocols on public safety frequencies is still a grey area. it seems pretty clear to me that such a system is most definitely not a "common carrier" defined by 47 USC § 153(11) [which the ECPA specifically refers to for its definition]:

So as I am sitting here in my office I am monitoring several radios: 1) My City Issued Motorola XTS5000 that has a scan list of the following Durham Talkgroups/Channels: Our Radio Shop TG, Gov Comm, Durham Police A & B, City & County Fire Dispatch, Fleet TG, City Hall TG, NCSHP TG. 2) Spare Motorola XTS 5000 monitoring the Statewide Event Talkgroups on VIPER. This is especially handy today as talkgroups Bravo 1&2 are being used by the various LE agencies in Raleigh in advance of the Ryan visit. 3) Motorola MTX 800 monitoring the Durham PD "Police 1-Police 5" Unit to unit TGs. 4) Motorola MTS 2000 monitoring City & County FD Dispatch plus Durham Mutual Aid 6D-10D. 5) Uniden BCD396XT scanner off for the moment but can be used in a pinch. I bought a used Jeep Cherokee recently and it came with a cheapo Cobra 19 Ultra III CB radio. I've never used a CB radio before, but I thought it might be neat to play around with it since it's already there. We can't get any signal on it, and my Ham friend says the tip of the antenna is broken off from the base. It's one of those small ones with a coil under the tip and has a magnetic base. Suggestions on a small, cheap replacement CB antenna? If it's going to cost too much to get it working then I'll probably just tear it out since I won't use it much. 9/16/2012 1:20:16 PM |

^NRR is correct. I was just trying to provide a local place to pick up an antenna at a decent price. NRR: You know of any local places other than Radio Shack to grab a K40 or other type CB antenna? I have not participated in 11 meters for years so out of the loop when it comes to CB stuff. Whichever antenna you get make sure you check the SWR as if it is off then you could end up frying your radio.
Here was one of the many projects that kept me busy today...laptop stand in a DPD investigator vehicle:
Not responsible for seat fabric being torn...that was there when the car was dropped off this AM
Also had to swap out a dead Durham FD mobile radio for one that worked, had to realign 2 other DPD mobile radios and deal with a few DFD/DPD handheld radio issues. Issues pile up over the weekend and everyone comes in at once on Monday AM

So I took my General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) test yesterday. Overall I feel pretty decent about how I did. Will have results in 10 days or less. Waiting game till then. For those with scanners the following analog statewide Event talkgroups will be used for this years NC State Fair:
Statewide Events Alpha 1 (TG 784) = Entry/Exit Points and Patrol Statewide Events Alpha 2 (TG 816) = Event Channel Statewide Events Alpha 3 (TG 848) = Dorton Arena Statewide Events Alpha 4 (TG 880) = Fire/EMS/Red Cross Statewide Events Bravo 1 (TG 912) = LE Traffic Ops

So I picked up the above yesterday. No it does not do digital voice, no it does not do trunking, no it does not even have CTCSS/DCS but what it does do is Aviation/Mil-Air like none other. Many years ago I had a Pro 2006 just like this one above and I have always regretted selling it. So when I saw this one on Craigslist I could not resist. The Pro 2006 is regarded as one of the best scanners ever produced due to its sensitivity/selectivity, wide frequency coverage, and the fact it is easy to mod/customize. I am glad to give the above a good home

So I got some pretty big news today....It seems that I passed my General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) exam with a 92 on the 1st "Element" and an 85 on Element 3. This is a big relief as I studied my ass off over the last few months in anticipation of this exam. This was also something that my employer wanted me to have in my background and since I have passed it I can now move from Probation status to full time city employee. ^Nope. You need a receiver that is capable of receiving and following a digital voice (P25) trunked system...a receiver/scanner like one of the ones on this list: http://goo.gl/NjIOA
The VX-150 is an analog only VHF transceiver. And Franklin County is still making adjustments to the system....so complaints are expected as they are still in the beginning stages of using this system.

Been a long while but thought I would bump this thread a little with a quick video showing what happens when someone hits their emergency button on a radio system like the one I help manage: http://youtu.be/JTLcdxKt2As A little background: This was a demonstration I recorded for a FD representative that was unclear on how the EMERG button feature worked. When pressed the activated radio gets set up on a separate from dispatch agency EMERG TG/Channel (Police Emergency, FD Emergency, EMS Emerg, etc). The dispatcher gets the visual and audible indicator that an emergency button has been activated and is supposed to check on the person that caused the activation before clearing the Emergency status. Once cleared the radio returns to its normal agency dispatch Channel. In my video above my radio was moved from our regular "Radio Shop" channel to a Radio Shop Emergency Testing channel.
