I once went to Gypsy's and the bitch of a waitress said our friend couldn't stay since they weren't ordering food.

We said "fuck you" and rolled out. There were at least 5 of us who WERE going to order food, but our friend didn't have any money or wasn't hungry or something.

That's because Gypsy Shiny Diner is awesome serves awesome food you plebe.

But yeah, their service is so awful that if their burgers and deli sandwiches weren't so damn good, I would never go there.

I too have had poor service at gypsies. I went there when I was in my first or second year at State with a group of friends... the waitress starts off the night with a lecture about tipping and tell the group that's how she makes a living. (had never been there, and I always tip appropriately.)

There were about 8 of us, and a girl met us out there halfway through dinner (she had already eaten that night... we were going out somewhere after), and the waitress tells her that if she wants to stay then she has to order something or else she is not welcome to sit at our table. I think she ordered a drink.

On top of that, she screwed up our orders and I did not get a refill on my beverage the entire time we were there.

We left absolutely 0 tip and wrote a strongly worded letter explaining why. LAST LAUGH!

I mean my experience there is within the last year, not, you know, written in stone for the ages.

So maybe it's changed since then. Certainly all the waitstaff there now are really nice, it's just they can't refill a drink worth a damn.

hillsborough st. and western are a wasteland of mediocre restaurants. I guess you could say college students weren't as privy to spend money (thus more fast food/chain stuff), but there's a ton of colleges that have signature restaurants/bars that have always attracted students and were beloved hangouts. What's NCSU's place? Mitch's? The bowling alley? Players Retreat?

I liked the Greek place (Jasmine?) on Hillsborough that opened the year I graduated

I can't believe Melvin's is still there...remember Bowls that was there next to it for a few months?

Is ten ten still there? that place sucked.

no idea how I forgot

but I know it's a Raleigh staple

but Mitch's might actually be the most overrated place I've eaten at in my entire life.

and what a shithole. I see bugs, and/or dust/grime on shit every time I've ever been there.

i also don't hate Bada and don't think it belongs in this thread because it's not the worst of anything...

but i can not deny that i would rather hang out with my friends at other places occasionally...

but since i don't really hang out then i guess that's a moot point

Exact opposite for me and my husband. He eats there for lunch pretty much every week. I love their black bean chili. And when they have the sweet potato on special I'm one happy happy lady. We like it bc there's not one thing fried on their menu.

As for Mellow Mushroom, it's alright for what it is but I prefer Lilly's hands down if I want hippie pizza.

Lilly's is 4,000x better than Mellow Mushroom, and there are still at least 3 pizza places I'll eat at before Lilly's.

Re: Mitch's. . .last time we went there, Britt got some veggie thing, and it was inedible. I mean, no taste whatsoever, an absolute mess. I cant' remember everything I got, but it was awful. I do remember a squash and feta cheese soup I got, which should be outstanding, but SHIT it was terrible. We just sat there and marveled at how it's still open. A ceiling tile right above us was about to cave in on us, and had very obvious water damage, as did 2/3 of the ones we looked at around us. Just an uncomfortably nasty place, for me.

I wasnt super impressed with angus barn, but its not bad food. I dont consider pricing when it comes to food quality, they set prices based on who will pay for it...obviously people pay for it and I enjoyed eating there.

One of my friends has a huge hard on for Mellow Mushroom. Thankfully every time he's wanted to go the wait has been ridiculously long so we just end up going to Raleigh Times or MoJoe's or something instead.

I'm with you on that one. People (mostly professors in comp sci) were always talking up Mitch's, but it just wasn't that great to me.

It seems me and WillemJoel have a lot of restaurant bashing in common. I feel the same way about flying biscuit. Its just not that spectacular. And you can't even get tried and true staples, like real bacon.

i probably would have just gotten up and left or moved to a different section, that is completely lowbrow.

im sure she'd rather her manager not know she was bullying tips out of her customers, so shed probably just let you switch no questions asked.

^^ Same. I would just find that incredibly insulting since it insinuates that based on the way you look she has determined you will be a shitty tipper. There is absolutely no way I would have continued sitting in her section. I probably would have left the restaurant altogether after talking with the manager and taking a business card for the owner.

I was going to mention Rodolfo's feast as an example of the shitty food at Mitch's... I am stunned that it was described as amazingly good in this thread

it's a pound of undercooked penne pasta (poorly drained) with a single scoop of mediocre chili on top

ratio is way off, tastes like ass

Hell naw, when I've gotten it the chili greatly outweighs the pasta. That's what I love about it. And I've always had it cooked perfectly al dente. Maybe you just had a bad batch

How has Sadlack's not shown up on this list? That shady place next to North Hall? Maybe it isn't there anymore, I haven't been to campus since I graduated in 2007. My fortran instructor back in 2003 would always bitch about that place.

How is Sylvia's Pizza doing these days? That was always my favorite of the Hillsborough Street pizza places. I did like Amadeo's before it closed for renovations but it was still closed when I graduated so I never got a chance to go back before leaving. From this thread it looks like that was a good thing.

Even though they got lots of hate in this thread, I loved Melvin's, Golden Dragon, and Mitch's. I'd go to one of those three just about every day for lunch when I was in senior design. I still have my old Melvin's tshirt, they'd give you free ice cream if you wore it when you went there haha.

I lived in Sullivan my freshman year and I think I went to eat at Sakura Express once. I don't remember it being memorable.

I definitely remember it being god awful when I went back the next time in 2005 or so. The chicken dish that I got had chicken that would break your plastic knife if you tried to cut it into smaller pieces from the gargantuan pieces they threw in your teriyaki or whatever. Either give me a real knife or stop cooking leather-coated rocks, Sakura.

Lol, one of my friends here in DC that went to State as well told me a story about a guy taking her on a date to the Wolves Den freshman year last night. That's one of those dates where you know there's not going to be a second one from the moment it starts. I missed a psyc test freshman year because I got so sick from the cheese sticks at the Wolves Den. Has anyone run for Student Body President on a platform of getting rid of that place and replacing it with a real restaurant, because I think that would be a winning issue.

Last I saw, they'd rebuilt the place. Does anyone know if the clientele is still mostly 50 year old burnouts or did it change after it reopened?

And NOBODY hate on Mitch's. Too many memories tied up in that place.

personally, i like mitch's, but people have different opinions. bringing up mitch's on here at this point is almost as played out as the eastern/western BBQ debate.

closing The Underground and replacing it with the Wolves' Den was retarded...

I only went to the Wolves' Den once but made it a point to go to The Underground once a month since you could get a steak/baked potato/salad/bread stick dinner on your regular meal plan...and the food was actually good...
