Finally made got with a team that could make it through all the bases. That first base is kind of a bitch to attack if the other team has a couple competent snipers.

And for some reason, the SVD was taking 3 body shots for me to kill earlier. Maybe I was hitting lower leg or something? Idk I thought it was always a 2-hit unless you get a headshot.

If I was gonna do Crossfire, would 6950s or 6970s be better?

Some research on the card brought this up (I knew this before I bought, just more or less for an FYI for everyone else)

Just in case anyone has issues.... this is why I've steered clear of MSI after having a couple motherboards go bad, their quality (aside from TwinFrozrs) just isn't up to par with the other top tier manufacturers. One good card does not make a good company.

But I'm hoping for the best. Chances are it will only run stock freq's and the fan will be loud.

So I played the beta on my 9800 GX2 this last weekend and it was pretty decent... definitely playable even on low settings...

The one really bad bug was with the Nvidia beta driver. Everytime I fullscreened, or changed my graphics settings (like trying to change to medium detail) the driver would crash and the game would not recover.

^^Strange. Not happening with me. Although I did notice you have to completely exit the game and restart it for the settings to go into effect.

I can't decide on Ultra (or high) settings at 40-50fps or Medium settings at 90-120 FPS. The later is so much more enjoyable and 40-50 seems choppy compared to it but there are some noticeable differences in quality.

Oh yeah I forgot about that lol, all I got is a 120mhz monitor, maybe thats why I can't really tell a different. But it still hard to believe that 40-50 seems 'choppy' to someone though, unless they got eyes that a navy seal should have.

Wait you do have a 120hz monitor? There's only like 2 27" ones on the market and the rest are 24" or smaller.

Yeah I don't think I can tell a difference between 80 and say 120 but the human eye can apparently distinguish up to 70-80 pretty easily. So once you get used to 80+ halving that to 40 is quite noticeable and choppy.

Quote :
"^do you have 120Hz monitor? if not, then you probably won't be able to tell anything different over 60fps"

But yeah if you have a standard monitor or HDTV you're restricted to 60hz or 60fps so even if the game is rendering faster it's still only showing 60 max.

im not saying you need to level up to gain access to talent points. give people a set number of points and let them customize as they see fit. everyone can build differently without a need to grind or level up. all the guns are the same but maybe your reload time is reduced by 20% or you can zoom 15% farther, or you can carry 30% more ammo, etc. build for your game play style

"The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better."

sure it's not the final build....but i have run tons of open/closed betas at my job and you'd be a fool to think they'd release a product to the world that is not at least very, very close to the product they are selling.

no doubt beta is going to have issues, but who puts out a product that is intentionally shitty compared to what they are selling? I'd get fired for RC'ing (open beta more or less) that we knew was junk and not representative of a GA/GM build.

come on......I equate this to the builds reviewers get right before release. Maybe some more polish but what you see is what you get.

I love BF (hence why I made this thread), but I'm taking what has been given as a fair representation of the final product. The fucking game ships in 3 weeks. The damn discs are being pressed now. I find it hard to believe they can completely re-do the fucking engine in a month.

I am always up for eating crow, but I'm no fool when it comes to shipping software products. No doubt this a partially tested build, but you don't overhaul your entire engine a month before release. No doubt this is a buggy build, but the engine is there.

the problem with your thought process is that this is your average piece of software. it's not. it's a game. particularly important is that it's a multiplayer game with a huge backing.

if you think they'd release a game "demo" close to the final product, then everyone would just play the demo and not buy it. a playable yet not that great beta is a great way to get people hooked on gameplay, test the infrastructure, yet keep people drooling for more.

this strategy of releasing games does not apply to apps or your run-of-the-mill software platforms.

For every statement you made, the opposite is true.

Making a mediocre beta drives people away from dropping $60 on a game with stiff competition (cough MW3). It's buggy, who cares....those will be fixed. I've just been reading so much lately about folks who think the game will be drastically different than this come release day.

I know for sure things like the ultra textures are missing and whatnot, but the engine fundamentals are there. I've forgotten why I originally said what I said.......lol, but I know what we are playing is 90% of what we will get. It's how a beta works. They give you a buggy build, you test it and provide feedback. Open beta isn't the time for engine overhaul.

Either way I have my preorder through Origin and I am looking forward to the release as this build doesn't play nice with Crossfire

I get flickering in outdoor areas and spikes if hitching. Looks widespread for the most part. From what I hear updated drivers and the final build should correct it.

I think you will see more fps in the retail build as bugs are ironed out on both ends

I get flicker and weird little persistent smoke balls occasionally, and some areas inside the subway are a lot darker on the computer than on the xbox. Could be a shadowing or smoke issue, or maybe low memory for the textures, but it's almost like a dark fog.

Still, it's all little stuff that doesn't bother me enough to use xbox when I'm still so much better on PC and it has 64 players.

I also discovered the Battlefield Play4Free thing they have going, old nostalgic BF2 maps and the players are all terrible, a sniper's paradise.

BC2 "Beta" was a demo and so is BF3, a single map in a single play style is not a "Beta". Sure you can find flaws on one map in one mode, but giving us more would provide more info. The point is EA/DICE doesn't want people to play the full game for free; it is like the Red Light District in Amsterdam, they show tits at the windows but the real thing is inside for a certain price.

Battlefield 3 Beta Performance Test (took long enough)
http://www.techspot.com/review/448-battlefield-3-beta-performance/

Glad I got a 570...

Although I would have liked to see 6950 (CF) and 560 Ti (SLI)

Quote :
"Overclocking your Core i7 processor is not going to help deliver more performance in Battlefield 3 according to our test using a single GeForce GTX 580 card. We observed that a 49% increase in clock speed for the Core i7 allowed for a mere 6% increase in frame rates."

Those benches are complete BS, the 480 is faster than the 570 in almost every game, always has been since they are almost identical.

I play at 1920x1200 with a Q9550 and 480 I and get higher FPS in Ultra with 4xAA/16xAF than they posted with no AA and on high. That site needs to check their numbers.

wow dude, you must not understand what benchmarking is.

read the testing & methodology page, if you system is different than yours, chances are you're going to get different numbers.

pretty much every benchmark on the internet shows that the 570 is 5% or less faster than the 480, which is pretty much on par with this benchmark. i don't see anything wrong with it.

If people ITT knew what the hell a beta means and what the fuck EA and DICE was trying to accomplish with this open beta, then people would know what the fuck was going on and stop bitching like a little school girl on Christmas for getting conned out of some fake diamond necklace. Like I've said from the start, its a beta, its a stress test, they used an older build, mainly to test DICE notoriously shitty stats server and network backbone. Even till today, their BC2 stats servers suckass. They know it sucks, this is why they did this beta and have as many people on as possible.

Why have a neutered game engine? keep the system specs low so more people can join the servers as well as to keep the download file size below 4gb, otherwise it would bloat to something like 10gb+. Whose gonna download a 10gb beta? A moot point for most of us here, but if you are talking with people who have min specs, they'd probably won't

Quote :
"Making a mediocre beta drives people away"

No it doesn't. It's a beta, any person with a brain would know what the fuck it stands for. And don't bullshit us with "oh I beta tested all other games and blah blah blah" no one gives a fuck. Is it your job? your career? did you get paid $$$ to alpha and beta test these products and know how to debug the software? no? get a clue.

And fuck paying $60 for any new game anyhow. That's why if you are smart, you find deals to get it for 25% off with a combo deal or something.

Also, just to note, COD black ops was shitty for the first month with a huge release day patch. BC2 was the same way. A big game like this is gonna be shitty for the first month of release as they try to fix shit. If you want to bitch about it, go ahead, wait a month and see if the game improved. Yes, I know, it's stupid for them to release an unpolished game and blah blah blah, that's business. They only have such a finite amount of resources to make the game, test it and launch it.

Remember, they are spending 300 million+ over a few years to develop a modern A+ title game these days; that's a lot of risk if they need to delay the game for another 6 months (unless your name is blizzard and you got bank). I would not put it past EA if they spend another 300 million on just ads for this game.

I honestly don't know if this game is going to surpass COD black ops sales; I'd doubt it would even though its probably going to be a better game. There are just more COD players in the world. Plus MW3 is gonna eat some BF3 sales.

And as for the 570, its what the 480 should have been... use less power. It's faster then my 5870, but I'm glad to get rid of it so I can get back on CUDA and fucking stable drivers for a change. FUCK

And Prospero, yeah, two of my shitty clanmates have the same issue that you have with the 9800 gx2. One has the same card, the other uses a 9800 SLI setup; once they did in game full screen or used window mode and then full screened twice in a row, it would crash the driver. Apparently, its an issue.

jbaz is a tard

games are not supposed to be shitty for months after they release.

the massive number of problems in this open "beta" should have been fixed during internal testing and closed betas months ago.

Open betas like this are supposed to be large scale systems tests (ex: testing the battleturd and server browser system) and large scale compatbility testing (ex: odd problems in wierd gpu/cpu/software configs).

Now i guess they could do an open beta using an old build but only a total retard would do that if they have a working product they could use instead.

Theres just all sorts of stockholm syndrome bullshit going on in this thread and in the official forums because idiots think they "OH ITS A BETA SO ALL PROBLEMS ARE OK!!!".

that might be the case in a closed beta 6 months from release but this is in an open beta 2 weeks from release. its a total joke.

well now i'm pissed. this POS MSI GTX 570 seems to have a chipset incompatibility with my Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3 or something... it's not the driver, it's the card or motherboard and since the motherboard was reset and updated, i'm assuming i'm gonna have to RMA the card and that's not a sure thing if there's a chipset incompatibility.

Background:
1) Complete working system w/ 9800GX2
2) Replaced with 570
3) No video post
4) Random reboot loops (unplugging power supply for 10+ seconds fixes)
5) No video post, boots into Windows 7, THEN I get video
6) Reboot, and doesn't post any longer
Seems to give me video in Windows 7, once every 40 times of trying to boot. Never any video POST.

Tried:
1) Updated motherboard BIOS
2) Unplugged everything except CPU/1-DIMM/VGA
3) Reset CMOS
4) Cleared BIOS settings to Fail-Safe defaults
5) Set PCI-E to first
6) Checked PSU (650W @ 87% efficiency, 54A on the 12V rail (nVidia recommends 32A))
7) Checked cable
8) Checked monitor
9) Replaced with 9800 GX2 and works everytime, no issues.

Specs:

so Prospero you also believe the 5870 is faster than the 480 and 570 as in the benchmark?

I obviously don't know how benchmarks works since I said I got faster FPS on a lower end machine with the same GPU. However I forgot my 480 is OC'd to 880/1760/4000, which is pretty far over stock speeds. The 570 can't OC like that due to it's VRM, but with both cards at stock the 480 still has an extra 8 ROPs (Raster Operator units) units over the 570 and 256Mb of VRAM unless you paid extra to get the 2Gb version of the 570. Those 8 ROP units might not seem like much, but it increases the fill rate resulting in higher performance (GPixel/s). So the cards are almost equal, but the 480 is still the higher spec card and it has large OC potential with after market cooling.

But it is like arguing over the T/A Firebird vs SS Camaro.

^ sorry about your troubles, I swear I hear more and more people having issues with the 570 in one way or another. Normally it was always trouble OCing and/or killing the card doing OCing even with After Market cooling due to the lower spec VRM vs the 580/480. Yours sounds like DOA though.

That benchmark means nothing anyway, it is Beta. In 3 weeks from today we will have the real game and then we can see some benches. Since they don't test the 480 anymore I normally guess my card w/ OC right above the 570.

Oh yea the 480 also has a larger Bus Width at 384bit vs 320bit on the 570 resulting in higher memory bandwidth on the 480.
