Just read the US/Italian extradition treaty. Not really sure why the US wouldn't send her over, other than to give a big, figurative middle finger to Italy.

Yeah I think as far as the US sees it, she was put on trial and acquitted, no reason to extradite.

And it looks like she'll be limited to a life within the US. Even countries that would normally not extradite her may see her as a bargaining chip with Italy if there's enough grey area in their own treaties.

I'm pretty sure she was put on trial and first convicted, which went to an appeal which she won, then a superior court judge threw out the findings of the appeal court and had her appeal tried again, which she now just lost. The only thing Knox can do now in Italy is appeal to the highest court I think.

So technically she's been convicted twice in a row with one last chance of getting off. (giggity)

Bad maths aside, from what I recall, the evidence against Knox and her old b/f was thin at best.

Additionally, didn't they already convict the drifter from the Ivory Coast of the murder? Didn't he confess and say that he did it all by himself? They only gave him 16 years, but yet they want to give these two 25-26????

These two would never be convicted here in the US, but this isn't the US.

Knox’s supporters argue she should be protected from extradition because the Italian system — which allows prosecutors to appeal a verdict — violates the US legal prohibition on double jeopardy: trying someone twice for the same crime. Legal experts attach little weight to this argument. “They always forget she was convicted first,” said Julian Ku, who teaches transnational law at Hofstra University. Knox and her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito served four years in prison for the murder before being released after an appeal led to their 2011 acquittal. The Italian Supreme Court overturned that ruling in 2013, sending the case back for re-trial. Italy must first file an extradition request with the US State Department, which will then determine if it should ask the Justice Department to detain Knox. Knox then has the right to challenge her extradition in a US court. “The chances of her winning that are not high because there has to be some very strong claim she’d have to make to block her extradition,” Ku said in a telephone interview. While the “public notoriety” of the case could theoretically push the State Department to deny the request, Ku said it would be difficult to argue that the Italians didn’t meet US standards of justice. “I followed the trial, it was slow but I never got the sense that it was unfair,” he said. A US State Department official confirmed that there is an extradition treaty between the United States and Italy, but declined to comment on Thursday’s verdict and trial."

All I gleaned off that article is that the US and Italy have an extradition treaty; Italy can ask for extradition; and the US might OR might not grant it; all of which we already knew.

And I don't see how Snowden would play a role in this, there's no contest for his extradition since we don't have a treaty with Russia.
I'd think Polanski or Assange would be a better case for why we would be at diplomatic odds with denying her extradition.

The international diplomacy angle is the reason I think we'll send her over if they ask. Why would we want to alienate a European ally over refusing to extradite a high profile individual? She's not important to the US other than she's white and attractive.

If she was smart, she'd catch a plane to Russia and hang out with Snowden.
