And now I'm going to take it back to bitching about plans...
Quote : | "NEW YORK (AP) -- Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest cellphone company, is dropping nearly all of its phone plans in favor of pricing schemes that allow consumers to share data usage among up to ten phones and other devices.
The new plans will let individuals add non-phone devices like tablets and laptops to their plans, as well as the phones of family members.
The change takes effect June 28.
It's the biggest revamp in wireless pricing in years, and one that's likely to be copied by other carriers. AT&T Inc. has already said that it's looking at introducing shared-data plans soon.
Verizon's new "Share Everything" plans include unlimited phone calls and texting, and will start at $90 per month for one smartphone and 1 gigabyte of data. If used only with a smartphone, "Share Everything" prices are lower than for current plans with unlimited calling and texting, but higher than plans with limited calling and texting.
Bigger savings will come for those who add more devices like tablets to their plans. In such cases, the new pricing system will be cheaper compared to getting separate data plans for each device. That gives Verizon a chance to capitalize on the growing popularity of tablets. Few consumers put tablets on data plans, probably because they dread paying an extra $30 or so per month, on top of their phone bills.
Under "Share Everything," adding a tablet to a plan will cost $10 per month. Adding a USB data stick for a laptop will cost $20.
Verizon's limited-calling and texting plans will disappear, except for one $40-per-month plan intended for "dumb" phones. Verizon is keeping its limited-data plans for single non-phone devices, like the $30 tablet plan.
Current Verizon customers will be able to switch to the new plans or keep their old ones, with one exception. Those who have unlimited-data plans for their smartphones won't be able to move those to new phones, unless they pay the full, unsubsidized price for those phones. (For example, an iPhone 4S that costs $200 with a two-year contract costs $650 unsubsidized, with no contract.)
Verizon stopped signing people up for unlimited-data plans last summer. The industry as a whole is moving away from the plans, since the data capacity of their networks is limited.
Under the new plans, subscribers can stop worrying about monitoring the number of calling minutes or text messages their families use in a month, but they'll have to keep a close eye on data consumption. Verizon will allow subscribers to adjust their data allowance from month to month, but if they go over their monthly allotment, that will cost $15 per gigabyte.
The data allowances start at $50 per month for 1 gigabyte. That's enough for prudent two-smartphone users who use Wi-Fi a lot, but Verizon recommends getting 2 gigabytes for $60. After that, each additional 2 gigabytes cost an extra $10 per month.
Under "Share Everything," Verizon will stop charging extra for letting devices act as "mobile Wi-Fi hotspots." That means subscribers who have a recent smartphone could use it to connect a tablet to the Internet, without paying the extra $10 per month for a tablet.
Verizon had telegraphed the move toward shared plans, but had not revealed the details or pricing.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of New York-based phone company Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC, a British cellphone company with wide international interests. " |

Kind of nice that they will allow phones to be used as mobile hot spots, however $90/month for a phone with 1GB of data is ridiculous even if it does have unlimited minutes/texts. They're just giving their customers more of what they don't want and less of what they do while increasing rates.

It's not your fault, but these people have to be pretty dense if they can't figure out how many minutes they need each month or how many texts they will use. It's pretty simple to log in at Verizon.com, look at the past twelve months of usage, and know if you're consistently staying under the 450 or 900 minute plans. The same goes for texts. Any Verizon rep should be able to look at their usage and make a suggestion in just a couple of minutes as well.
Verizon rep: "You've never gone over 450 minutes or 250 texts." Customer: "Well then sign me up for the plan that costs more and comes with half as much data usage!

i just switched over to this plan. i have my iphone, my wifes iphone and our ipad on it. i'll be saving about $40/month, increased talk minutes form 1400 to unlimited, unlimited txt stays the same and data plan is 6gig, also the same (was 2 gig per device before). so for me it was a no brainer.

my current useage is 291 of 500 minutes, 66 of 500 texts and 1.9 GB of unlimited data with 7 days left in the billing cycle. I've slightly went over my minutes once, never come close to text (verizon to verizon is already unlimited for both). My bill would go up by about $15 if i switched, so i'm holding on as long as possible.

This is true and our software allows us to very easily decide if they should switch plans or not. I was talking about new customers from Boost Mobile and other places, especially if they were already getting unlimited talk and text.
Also, current Verizon customers don't believe me when I tell them their usage for the last 3 months. I have to show them the screen and them explain the chart to them. People in the country don't own those fancy computas.
Most people don't understand how upgrades work at all. An upgrade will extend your contract for 2 years. You can upgrade every 20 months. Just because you have an upgrade does not mean every damn phone is going to be free. The free smartphones will probably be shitty. 7/12/2012 11:51:18 AM

My Dad and I are heading to Windsor Canada in August and will be spending most of our time in Detroit. Does anyone know if Windsor is close enough to Detroit that we'll still pick up Verizon? If not, does anyone know if I can pick up a pre-paid SIM for my Galaxy SIII to keep from roaming? I believe the "International Unlock" isn't available for it yet but I'm not sure whether Canada works without it.
And yes, I do plan to call Verizon but we're both on business plans and business support is closed on weekends. 7/22/2012 2:05:29 PM

The company this month began offering reports to marketers showing what Verizon subscribers are doing on their phones and other mobile devices, including what iOS and Android apps are in use in which locations. Verizon says it may link the data to third-party databases with information about customers' gender, age, and even details such as "sports enthusiast, frequent diner or pet owner."

I love Verizon in general and think they provide pretty good service and options with regard to hardware. But I will NEVER buy into the bullshit hype about data "costing oh so much." It's a farce. It's simply supply & demand. People are dumb enough to pay for it so it'll continue. This is why we don't end up with decent innovation. Companies just want to squeeze money out of existing ideas instead of coming up with new ones. Then they bitch and moan when they fall behind the times and start litigating like hell to try and fight the inevitable. Data is not expensive. There is no magic data crunch on the horizon. 10/16/2012 1:57:43 PM
