Regarding the nut job in Co: no amount of gun regulations would have stopped him from going nuts. If it wasn't guns, he would have used bombs, or vehicles or something. He was nuts.

Regarding "routine" crime or gang violence: gun regulation can have some impact on reducing the severity of the damage, but is only 1 small component in fighting "routine" crime.

THIS. This is what all of you anti-gunners are all about. In one argument, you're saying fuck the government for violating constitutional rights, illegal searches, etc. But you WELCOME the government to start knocking down doors "just to check" in the case of firearms. You're willing to violate all kinds of rights to chase some pipe dream of getting rid of all firearms. The reality is, is that you don't care about any constitutional right. You just adhere to Bloomberg's talking points and have an irrational, unbased hatred of firearms because they're scary, because people do bad things. It's a cousin to the ol' conservative view of "I ain't done nothing wrong, so I ain't go nothin' to hide" when it comes to giving up your constitutional rights. Yeh, YOU don't care because you don't have firearms. So you think you'll be safe. But for your pipe dream to work, the government would have to search everyone and their properties for firearms. So no one is safe. You want the government to come in and look around. Have fun with that when they find your pot/coke/prescription drug stash.

It's the same problem with illegal immigrants. Technically they should all be deported. But in reality, most of them are good, diligent people doing no wrong. You could deport them, but that entails massive searches, unheard of logistics, and billions of dollars. Sure there is a solution but in no way shape or form is it plausible, much less feasible. Nor is the solution guaranteed to work. It's a pipe dream that talking heads love to spout, but in reality it's just not a good idea.

I said that. And who is "all about this"? Anyone wanting to disarm the people. There is only one way to "get rid of guns". It's been stated multiple times ITT, people want all the guns taken away and done away with. And that requires the government forcefully searching the population and their properties. And to be successful, the government can't base it on ATF forms. They'd have to violate everyone's rights to fulfill this absurd dream. And in the end, it would still fail.

Well, we didn't start off with a war on drugs.

Drugs were made illegal. Drugs were confiscated on sight. Punishments were dealt.

It failed.

Then right-wingers created the war on drugs, which has cost billions of dollars (trillions yet?), escalated violence, resulted in LEO deaths, innocent bystander deaths, puppy deaths , and has filled jails/prisons with drug users instead of real criminals. It's likely only a matter of time for a war on guns.

Well certainly better law enforcement is needed, that's a big part of any battle. As far as fucking up past prohibitions, it seems the U.S. government doesn't have a good track of any prohibition on a massive scale. And certainly it wouldn't improve when you're talking about ending/violating a constitutional right of the people.
