It's hilarious to me that christianity in america has been boiled down to stuffing your face with fast food. The swan song of a dying mythology. Instead of, oh, I don't know, actually listening to Jesus' advice to give money to the poor, they spent upwards of $6 to show the world how much they fucking hate gay people. If the christian god exists, he is ashamed of you.
Let's be honest though, maybe 2% of the people at CFA have ever read the bible, so they have no idea what's in there.... 8/2/2012 3:11:43 PM |

It's not that he just doesn't agree with it, this isn't a surprise
It's that a billionaire spends millions of dollars funding groups that are trying to enshrine Christian values into our government. This affects your life and mine negatively.
Any true conservative should be against a religious group wrangling our government this way.
You wouldn't tolerate a Muslim group pushing for a government based on sharia law, why tolerate Christina groups pushing the same agenda as sharia law? 8/3/2012 12:33:56 AM |
Eaton Bush All American 2342 Posts user info edit post |
Because I agree with Christian values and I don't value Shariah Law. What Christian value do you disagree with? Christian values are already enshrined in our gov't the Founding Fathers were men with Christian values. The Constitution is set up to guarantee freedom OF religion not freedom FROM religion.
You mean he spends millions to lobby Washington? That happens every day from thousands of groups. Its his money he can spend it how he wants and from what I've seen from our gov't he has wasted a lot of money.
Here is the deal on gays for me. I don't hate gays but I don't like the behavior. Just like I don't hate smokers but I hate the smoke. Smoke all you want just don't do it around me and I want try to hang out in your smoke pit. Gays want to keep pressing on the gay marriage thing. For me its a semantics problem. Marriage is between a man and woman. If they call it a civil union and it has all the same legal benefits of marriage then what? Civil union isn't in the Bible so what is a Christian to do then? They still wont like the gay lifestyle but they wont be able to say much about gay marriage. I don't think most Christians give 2 shits about gays being married but they are pretty sick of it be pushed in their face all the time ( think about the smoker analogy). So gays want to be married? Be careful what you ask for... Divorce is a bitch. 8/3/2012 7:16:58 AM |

^Pretty much sums up my position on this whole cluster fuck as well. He can say what he want, spend his money how he wants (as long as it is not going to some illegal purpose) and people can choose not to go there if they don't want to.
And if we are going to ban Christian lobbying, then should we ban all religious lobbying? I'm sure there is no Jewish presence in lobbying, or Muslim, etc. All groups have some political influence to a greater or lesser extent. What about atheists and other groups who want any trace of religion removed from everything. Should that be outlawed too? Unfortunately lobbying is a fact of life in this day and age, and if you want your side to have any representation, that is the way DC works.
As to your last line, I am fine with gay civil unions too. That gives them all the rights and privileges that they are requesting, then so be it. I don't hate homosexuals one bit. I have several that I work with and hang with on my own time. I don't agree with their choices, but I don't agree with a lot of choices that my friends and family make. Doesn't mean I have to hate them for it. Honestly just tired of the whole circus. Time to go get my spicy chicken biscuit now. 8/3/2012 7:29:40 AM |

Just because ignorant fucks like Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin still believe that our founding fathers framed our constitution and govt on Christianity does not mean you should be given a pass to the same. Have you really made it this far in life without reading things like Wadhead1 posted above? Do you think all the quotes out there from the founding fathers denouncing religion are made up simply because they don't fit your world view.
And I suppose that someone will now chime in to say that, yeah, they understand that but the constitution was based on "Christian Values" not "Christianity". So let's just say that's true...so clearly the values they're using have been cherry picked so as to not base laws on all the stupid bullshit in the Bible too (do I need to pull up all those dumb ass rules or can you figure this out yourselves?) So now that that's established, since clearly they aren't using ALL the rules in the Bible, who gave you the right to pick out ones that should be enforced if it isn't explicitly stated in the constitution?
Oh and for everyone coming into this thread and saying something along the lines of, "Does this really surprise anyone, they close on Sundays!". You are a retarded fuck who clearly has not read ANY of the thread...no one is surprised, no one is saying he isn't allowed to say what he said.

And consumers can spend their money however they want too (and boycott spending their money there, and they can even protest if they want). This has been repeated so many times, I'm not sure why people keep saying this.

Slightly OT, but I've been reading through Ben Franklin's auto-biography recently and at least in regards to him, it's quite clear from his readings that Franklin was a religious man. Most likely he was a christian, but I hesitate to use that word because it's also very clear from his readings that Franklin's religion was a very personal thing and his christianity was so very very different from the modern (public) christian that it's almost incomparable. Franklin's beliefs clearly (from his own statements) transcended the boundaries of any sect, and he was quite happy to attend and learn from multiple different denominations. He clearly believed in the value of both religion and religious institutions in society. However, he also had no gumptions about denouncing or refusing any religious figures or institutions which he found lacking. No money he ever gave to a religious organization was simply because it was religious or even simply had the same basic views he did. He also did not appear to have any desire to mix religion with the government, but was neither against such a beast, though he would at times point out the number of troubles and inconsistencies it caused among those institutions, such as when largely Quaker settlements with strict religious codes of non-violence found themselves voting on and raising or sending money for defenses. So no, Franklin was not a christian in the modern sense of the word, but modern attempts to paint him as someone ambivalent about religious at best are also false. If you can make it through the language, the book is a good read, and on Kindle for free.8/3/2012 12:47:42 PM |

Being hungry is a result of chemicals and biological reactions in the body and brain. Eating food could be said to be a choice... but it is a choice that is very easily made by the fact you are so hungry. It would not be rational to decide not to eat when hungry... starvation, death, etc. as a result.
The example was being gay is not a choice, but having gay sex is. That is true... that is like how some heterosexuals choose not to have sex until marriage. Still, you have a biological reactions that in most cases makes you feel the temptation to choose to have sex.8/3/2012 4:19:28 PM |
OopsPowSrprs All American 8383 Posts user info edit post |
^ Just like it would not be rational to have sex with a woman when your "biological reactions" make you attracted to men. The fate of not eating when hungry is death. The fate of acting heterosexual when homosexual is being miserable your entire life. Both are tragic.
The point is that those who agree with Dan Cathy need to stop using "It's a choice" as a crutch. Take ownership of the fact that you (not necessarily you in particular) are denying someone a privilege on the basis of something they can't help, at no cost to you. 8/3/2012 5:12:32 PM |

^^The kiss-in was obviously poorly conceived.
There aren't that many gay people to begin with. Then, in areas where Chick-fil-As are located, you have to figure there's probably fewer gay people, and of them, they're less likely to be out and in a relationship. And, of those people, there's even less who have the time to go and kiss at Chick-fil-A on a specific day.
So, really, to have any sort of numbers at all, we were counting on non-gay teenagers to show up at Chick-fil-A and start kissing each other to make a point (because no adult would do such a thing). And, unfortunately, the teenagers who would be reliable enough to show up for a protest were already busy...with their jobs at Chick-fil-A.

Holy shit this thread went full retard while I was gone.
Regarding Ben Franklin (and most of the Founding Fathers) religious beliefs, you don't have to guess:
Quote : | "Franklin formulated a presentation of his beliefs and published it in 1728.[89] It did not mention many of the Puritan ideas as regards belief in salvation, the divinity of Jesus, and indeed most religious dogma. He clarified himself as a deist in his 1771 autobiography,[90] although he still considered himself a Christian.[91] He retained a strong faith in a God as the wellspring of morality and goodness in man, and as a Providential actor in history responsible for American independence.[92]" |
Note the "still considered himself a Christian" comes from this excerpt from a 20th century historian with no evidence which sounds much less convincing: Other Deists and natural religionists who considered themselves Christians in some sense of the word included Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin.
They were deists who believed that the Bible was full of shit and human reason was the way to discover the nature of their god. Learn this word: 'deist.' Quit comparing them to modern American Christians.
