Has anyone ever been to Saigon Sandwiches in Greensboro? Had it there for lunch and lawd it was delicious. And just 3 bucks for a sandwich that would be 8 bucks at whole foods if they have a deli counter.

The lettuce is wilted. The type of lettuce is iceberg and terrible. The tomatoes are mealy. Pre-sliced tomatoes are cause for concern. Pre-shredded lettuce are cause for concern. Banana peppers????????? Jalapeños sitting in their own juice for extended periods of time. The cheese is terrible. There aren’t even many cheese options. The bread, too, is a problem: the biggest problem, in fact. First of all, it’s too puffy and weirdly hard on the bottom. Second, the types of bread with weird, hard Asiago cheese glued to the top are especially bad. Third, if you want a toasted sandwich, they pop the bread in a little Easy Bake Oven-type thing, and you can watch it spring into its predetermined quasi-baguette shape with extreme reliability. That’s not how bread is supposed to work. That’s how “way too many preservatives” work. The thought of all this is making my stomach upset, and I’m not even smelling the smell, which is probably caused by the bread, and in any event immediately puts me in a bad place. Also, don’t eat their tuna sandwiches. I love meat-based sandwich salads very much, but the concept of a mass-produced tuna concoction is disturbing. Seriously, if you’re ordering a fish-centric sandwich from a fast-food establishment, you need to think deeply about your life’s trajectory. Let’s talk about the names for these sandwiches for a second, too. Veggie Delite ®? What does the Delite® entail, and what exactly is delite-ful about it? Ooohhh, cucumbers on a springy piece of Styrofoam bread! Which forest was the Turkey Breast & Black Forest Ham sandwich harvested from? Italian B.M.T.®? Mama mia! Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt? Connotes images of a sweaty man wearing a tank top! Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki? Fuck you! Steak & Cheese? I’m already shitting my pants. According to their website, there are 43,837 Subways in 110 different countries. You can get dat BMT in Bahrain, home to 20 Subway restaurants. You can cop some meatballs in Malaysia, which has 190 Subways. Or you can find a spicy Italian in Suriname, where there are only three, albeit three more than Suriname should have. Luxembourg has 13, and Luxembourg is tiny. Something is wrong here. These things don’t add up. The last thing I would want if I were in Estonia (Subway count: seven), is a cold cuts sandwich that I can order an exact replica of in Sri Lanka, Slovenia, Guam, and Honduras. Sandwich meat does not transcend borders. Sandwich meat that claims to is not trustworthy. At least with McDonald’s or KFC, they’re not pretending to be healthy, and there is at least some distinct variation in the menu from country to country. Also, they don’t smell the same everywhere. That’s truly the worst part of the whole thing. Get a turkey sandwich from somewhere else. Fuck Subway."

A project manager tried to call me out in front of a dozen people because I said I didn't want to eat subway. I told him in a cold stare I'd rather eat at the gas station but its not going to kill me. We ate at subway that day but he was forcibly retired two months later.

Having eaten at Subway in many different countries, the menus are extremely region specific. Even in the US, the menus aren't fixed and can vary quite a bit in different parts of the country.

The tomatoes and lettuce are both sliced by hand in the store (along with several of the other vegetables). If either are mealy/wilted/sweaty it's a rare happening. More likely this is yet another "foodie" who doesn't actually have any clue what he eats on a day to day basis:

Just because juice cleanses are bullshit, does not mean Subway is good. The shit tastes like cardboard. While I'll agree their average menu item is probably better for you than the average menu item at most fast food places, that still doesn't make it taste good.

I find it humorous that you stick up for shitty tasting Subway so hard ITT, and you're currently pressing that proposition by going on an exclusive Soylent powder meal replacement diet...shows you don't place much value on enjoying what you intake. I mean I get that you're "not a foodie"...I'm not one either. But that doesn't mean I don't want to enjoy what I eat.

to me subway isn't great, but it's still better than mcdonalds and similar fast food. i have pretty low expecations for subway. i don't expect gourmet sandwiches from there. not sure why anybody would expect anything more than cheap sandwiches with fast food level quality from there.

i do always lol at most subway commercials for new menu items. "try our new spicy double steak and cheese with double the steak and pepper jack cheese!"...that's not a new menu item. anybody could've ordered that at any time previously. almost all of their new menu items are sandwiches that you could've ordered previously - maybe they didn't have a name on the menu, but nothing was stopping somebody from making a "turkey italian melt" or whatever before.

I enjoy Subway, personally, and think it tastes really good.

However, over the years I've come to realize that I have very low standards with regard to food and beer (and many other things). I used to to think everybody else was just trying to appear more sophisticated than was actually the case when they expressed horror/disgust at certain foods enjoyed, and secretly thought (for example) that Subway really tasted good. But no, not so. Other people really do find Subway disgusting, I'm just in the minority.

Having low standards is actually really convenient, it saves me money and makes it easy/cheap to procure meals. However, I think it arises from my having insensitive taste buds and a generally insensitive nature, so I probably don't enjoy really high-end shit as much as other people do. For example, I've never really enjoyed the taste of high-grade diggity-dank, although I do enjoy the more intense buzz.

You enter a Subway store, and it's empty, slightly too cool to be comfortable, slightly too damp to feel clean, and slightly too bright to be inviting. There is one lonely employee, who does their best not to look at you for those awkward 10 seconds while you walk to the counter before you're close enough to order. You know you interrupted them while they were doing something else. They give their greeting, ask you what you want, you begin scanning their workspace. The bins of raw ingredients are sitting askew, separated by steel walls, yet careless hands have dropped some of each on all the others. The preparation area is littered with crumbs and bits of lettuce, maybe the odd olive or onion piece here or there that has wedged itself into the crack between the food trays and the cutting board. This could have been cleaned up while nobody was there, but the employee doesn't care. For one second you wonder how it got messy in the first place given the lack of customers. Maybe it's staged, like those first few pennies in a homeless person's hat. Do you want it toasted? You do, but that would mean standing here for a minute with the stranger you disturbed waiting for the bread to be sanitized. You observe the employee assemble your sandwich, making sure to painstakingly put each ingredient on only one half of the sub. You ask for sauce and they squeeze it out of a disgusting rubber nipple, then toss the bottle back into its bin like they don't want to touch it either. Are they wearing those gloves to keep the food clean, or their hands? You pay, the sandwich heavily sags into a flimsy garbage bag it doesn't really seem to fit in and is handed to you. You walk out, into the light of the sun. The colors suddenly seem real again and you become aware of your breathing because the air feels rich and life giving somehow. The distant memory of tasty subs that brought you here lingers just beyond the edge of clear recollection, like an old acquaintance who's face you can't picture anymore. You carry your catch to the car. When did it get this bad?
