Can we just accept that both intelligent and normal people do irrational shit all the time in the heat of the moment? Its just left over monkey shit that we haven't evolved out of yet. Its so obvious but no one wants to acknowledge it. He turned himself in so he understands it probably wasn't the correct thing to do. We should just decide an appropriate punishment for him and not make a big deal out of it so we can get back to locking up non violent drug offenders.

Guy had twelve guns and a cache of ammo.

Remember kids, the only way to stop a bad guy with an arsenal is to be a good guy with an arsenal.

Maybe neither view on gun control is right. Why does everyone think there is a simple solution? Almost no social problem has a simple solution. At the end of the day no one is perfect and there will always be psychos, emotional aggression and unpredictable events. Maybe not everyone will be capable of living in society.

What is the publicly acceptable number of guns to have before you become a weirdo/prepper/gun nut? I currently have around 4-5, and a concealed carry permit. Am I a racist now?

^^ I'm not an anti-gun person. I do find it absurd that a poor middle aged man in a condo in Chapel Hill has twelve guns and brandishes them to confront neighbors (even before the shooting).

[Edited on February 13, 2015 at 5:11 PM. Reason : If you have five guns you're a gun nuts... But that is your right of course.]

There is no such thing as a gun nut. Its not a thing. It does not exist. We are all humans and different humans obsess over different things for different reasons. For some people its climbing mountains, for some people its playing music, for some people its owning guns, for some people its fucking, for some people its work. Some parents have 100 guns and have never harmed a soul. Some people have 0 guns and drown their own fucking kids, their own choice, their own literal DNA in a bath tub. Its not related at all. Why do people not believe this

Just to be clear I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to have an arsenal in their home. Just that I'm judging them for it.

Q: Why do you need 14 guns?
A: You don't

Q: Why do I need 3 guitar amps?
A: I don't

Q: Why do you need >0 guns?
A: You don't. You will never EVER use any of your guns in a defense scenario ever. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be allowed to have them. It doesn't make guns right or wrong. It also doesn't mean that everyone should have them. Its not related at all. How many people who own guns on this forum have been robbed? You can share the police report with me via PM.

Was waiting for an official editorial, and here it is, and... no surprise in any of it:

http://www.indyweek.com/news/archives/2015/02/13/why-did-craig-hicks-kill-three-muslim-students-because-he-lost-his-humanity

Quote :
"Or it was just bad luck. As one of his lawyers, Robert Maitland, said, with an unbelievable degree of insensitivity: “The victims were at the wrong time and the wrong place.”

As if it were the victims’ fault to be in the privacy of their home at 5 o’clock in the afternoon—the wrong time and the wrong place."

I think there's a misunderstanding about what 'wrong place/wrong time' means. I don't think it has anything to do with taking a risk conscientiously or something, and more to do with fate or something beyond the control of the individual.

But if anyone here knew someone who was obsessed with a movie about mass killings, who also owned a lot of guns, and who also tended to brandish his open carry when getting into confrontations with people, they would think that guy was a crazy gun nut.

If the homeowners association knew about this, they didn't handle it appropriately. If the police knew about this, they too screwed up. If my neighbor threatened me while having a gun on them, i definitely would be calling the cops.

^ saying they were at the wrong place at the wrong time implies they bear some responsibility for their own death. That's a pretty callous, and incorrect, way to describe this situation. You could literally apply that term to any bad thing that's ever happened, if you want to use a loose understanding of the meaning, but that would be foolish.

All I'm saying is that human beliefs do not always represent reality. We're designed to classify and categorize everything. If we didn't then we would eat every plant that looked edible. Its a trait of humanity. Sometimes your beliefs that are so engrained into the person that you present to the world are not actually what happens in reality. This dude believed either he was the god damn parking tyrant or he believed that he would rid chapel hill of muslims. It doesn't matter. Either way he was a fucked up individual who us people not in jail chose not to help. He's probably the kid that didn't get invited to the party, smelled funny or didn't whatever. Wouldn't it be nice if ONLY gun nuts killed people or ONLY gun nuts prevented crimes? Unfortunately everything is grey and no one at all on the planet knows of any universal truth. If you think that you do you're lying to yourself and you're harming humanity. Just be real about what this thing that we all experience is.

Quote :

This is a totally different subject but it needs to be said... Some people don't trust the police because the police in our country have historically been (and still are) a militia that is used to deal with social problems by force rather than with social change. Again I'm not saying this is wrong, but that is the reality. No one knows what to do with illegal aliens so we put them in private prisons. That doesn't make it right or wrong but we don't have a better solution currently that everyone agrees on so we make it illegal and throw them in jail. That is the truth of what happens. That doesn't mean an individual officer who arrests an illegal is racist or that his parents didn't immigrate here in the 40s, its just our current solution to a problem. 70 years ago immigration was not a problem. Stop making things something they're not. Removing your emotional attachment to your ideology is the only way to really progress as a species. Think with that big brain them monkeys dont got

here is the Presidential Statement that some are finding fault with

Quote :
"Yesterday, the FBI opened an inquiry into the brutal and outrageous murders of Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, Deah Shaddy Barakat, and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In addition to the ongoing investigation by local authorities, the FBI is taking steps to determine whether federal laws were violated. No one in the United States of America should ever be targeted because of who they are, what they look like, or how they worship. Michelle and I offer our condolences to the victims’ loved ones. As we saw with the overwhelming presence at the funeral of these young Americans, we are all one American family. Whenever anyone is taken from us before their time, we remember how they lived their lives – and the words of one of the victims should inspire the way we live ours.

“Growing up in America has been such a blessing,” Yusor said recently. “It doesn’t matter where you come from. There’s so many different people from so many different places, of different backgrounds and religions – but here, we’re all one.”"

It's come up quite commonly in accidental situations, and not nearly as picked over as this time around. I understand what you're saying though.

Accidental?!?

If you get hit by a bus whose brakes fail you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you're shot point blank in the head inside your own home by a nut you are the victim of a heinous crime.

The only other way I could interpret that 'wrong place at the wrong time' comment and still have it make any sense is if Hicks was literally gunning for anyone that day, and was just knocking on random apartment doors to kill whoever was inside.
This doesn't apply to this situation though.

It matters because the existentialist diatribes revolving around the deconstruction of the white male as a dominant society figure at the helm of any race, gender, or social victim in his perceived society, in publications like the Independent, could not exist without incidents like this being a hate crime. This got me thinking:

Quote :
"
because this is a white guy, we will spend the next days or weeks investigating his motives and having a conversation about why this guy did what he did. that conversation would not happen if the situation was reversed, if this guy was an "other." if a person of color did this we wouldn't have a conversation about his motive, instead everyone would call him a "thug" and consider that reason enough and move one. If a Muslim committed this crime everyone would just decide that they are obviously a radical Muslim and that explains everything. it is so much easier to understand crime when it is created by someone different than yourself, when you "other" people you dehumanize them and condense all of their actions and motivations into a pre-conceived understanding, you simplify them into a short description"

You think others should be envious of the fucking load of scrutiny involved in any of this? You're absolutely right though. Nobody questioned race in this incident:

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/9622817/

Did you read the article I posted from the Indy? How is this not yet another generalization of a type of person? Does history give us the right to perpetuate some perceived construct of anybody? Personally, I'd love it if we come to a time where this guy is considered a thug and can move on, but we all know that's not going to happen. We might as well be betting on the time it takes for the freeways to get blocked again...

If parking weren't the alleged motive outside of hate crime; if it were something like one of them was having an affair with the guys wife, and that's why she was leaving him, would perceptions change?

Bullshit, I don't do aliases.

I also could give zero blackjesus shits about this case. I'm atheist, victims/perpetrator are not. I'm black, victims/perpetrator are not. If you want BlackJesus to care it needs to be cop/race related. This is just another case of a crazy person killing people. Yes its sad, but its the norm.

The perpetrator was a self described "outspoken atheist" who frequently made anti-religious posts on Facebook.

so if these three that were killed didn't constantly (so it seems) piss the dude off, would he have killed them?

That's right, no one knows.

The sensationalist headlines that even mention 'hate crime' and 'terrorism' are worse for the overall race relations in this country than a random one time violent act.

I have. But you know what they stole? Two guns. Called the cops and they found him running naked down the street with our rifles and a box of ammo. Sucks that we have to wait until after his trial to get them back because of evidence rules.

Pretty sure it was PCP. The cops that responded said it was lucky the guy didn't get shot.

However, we store our guns and our clips separately, and he didn't take the clips.
