i am arab, and i lived in both france and italy for a while.
BY FAR french people are more racist than anybody i have ever seen towards arabs, it goes back to all that algerian war thing, the french colonized algeria and killed over a million people over the course of around 100 years, and then around 1 million whity french that were living in algeria got kicked back to france at the end of the algerian independence war. even black people in france are racist towards arabs.
Having said that, and given that Zidane was raised in france, i am sure he heard thousands of comments before, growing up. I dont see how he could have lost his temper over something like this. He doesnt take pride in his algerian origin, and doesnt take pride in his muslim religon, so if i see him on french TV today claiming that he lost his temper over a racist/religious comment, i will lose alot of the respect i had for that man. 7/12/2006 10:28:49 AM |

^^ and ^^^ how did he cost them the thing? Italy didn't score a goal in regulation when France was a man down, which would've been Zidane's fault. Zidane didn't make Trezeguet miss his pk and he played no part in Italy making all 5 of theirs 7/13/2006 6:38:18 PM |

Serie A match fixing scandal:
Here are the official verdicts. Teams can appeal but success in those unlikely, although outgoing Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi owns AC Milan.
Juventus in Serie B and will start at -30 points (this means they probably wanted them in Serie C1 as this pretty much ensures they cannot go up next year) AC Milan in Serie A and will start at -15 pts Lazio in Serie B and will start at -7 points Fiorentina in Serie B and will start at -12 points
Juve and AC Milan will not be in the Champions League and Lazio will not be in the UEFA Cup. So Italy (a top 3 in clubs in Europe, think that'll change after this year?) will have (the teams have to be submitted to UEFA on July 25th and cannot be changed, so the appeal window is 11 days):
CL Automatic: Inter Milan, Roma CL Qualifier: Chievo Verona, Palermo UEFA Cup: Livorno, Parma, Empoli 7/14/2006 5:49:30 PM |

World Cup Smackdown:
1) Even though the U.S. underachieved, it was kind of expected. They didn’t call Group E “The Group of (Near) Death” for nothing. ANYONE could’ve won that group! FIFA really needs to come up with a much better way of ranking teams since that #5 ranking was more fraudulent than the entire BCS system. Despite what many may say, the U.S. losing to Ghana wasn’t the biggest upset/disgrace. That distinction still belongs to North Korea’s 1-0 upset of Italy in the first round of the 1966 WC. At least Ghana outplayed Brazil in the Round of 16. What has N. Korea done since then? Nothing.
2) Onto the underachieving U.S. Guys, if you don’t want to show up at the world’s grandest stage, stay at home next time. Very little to compliment the team on. Dempsey definitely has potential in Europe. Johnson should have played more time. What was Bruce thinking?? Hey, Landon, there’s a reason why some MLSers and MLS fans call you “PrimaDonovan.” If you show up for South Africa, please do us a favor and reject any attempts to be the next U.S. captain. Beasley is another overrated POS who didn’t show up. Go back to PSV so you actually have an idea on how to kick the ass of Europe’s best.
3) Bruce Arena deserved a lot better than what he got from the team (gee, I wonder who will replace him). Now, that he’s on his way out, hopefully Klinsmann will whip the U.S. into the shape and cut all the deadweights like Donovan.
4) Hey England, stop blaming Cristiano Ronaldo for your woes. If you hadn’t played so damn conservatively every single game, you’d be holding the trophy. If Wayne Rooney hadn’t been such a fucking prick and had kept his temper in check, S-GE would be a god in your land. After all, it was England who failed to show up for the PKs. WTF was CR to do? Country ahead of team…end of discussion. Don’t turn soccer into hip-hop with this “snitching” nonsense.
5) Portugal is finally for real.
6) Mexico and Spain are now battling it out for the title of Most Overrated World Cup Squads.
7) If Mexico is CONCACAF’s best, they’d better hope and pray to get the 2014 WC because it’s the same old thing with the Tricolors…losing in the Round of 16. Hell, they may even lose in Round 1 next time.
8) Brazil’s loss to France was inexcusable. Once again in Brazil‘s case, the worse team won. Except this time, Brazil was on the losing end.
9) The fact that UEFA and CONEMBOL have every trophy says a lot about the other continents. The other federations have got to get serious about winning. This is like the BCS conferences winning the NCAA basketball championship. Oh wait, that has happened every year since 1990. Never mind.
10) I’m glad France lost because they had a little controversy before the WC where their citizens didn’t want the black players on the team. Guess who helped save Les Bleus from another embarrassing early exit. It was folks like Henry. Karma’s such a bitch, isn’t it? As far as Zidane goes, he needs to come over to play in MLS ASAP since his own folks will eventually turn on him and no one else in Europe will care for Le Thug.
11) Just amazing at the butt kissing that Deutschland’s own fans gave Klinsmann once they advanced to the semis. These were the same people who demanded that his ass be fired prior to the WC. They also had no faith in their own team until the team bitchslapped everyone around. Klinsmann resigning from Germany was the best thing he could do. Hopefully, he will stick it to the Fatherland in four years.
12) Coming to find out, the Azzuri weren’t really affected by the scandal that much. Too bad, this will only be the kind of good news for Italy. The scandal will really hurt their chances to repeat.
13) Sepp Blatter is a disgrace. He wanted refs to be tightwads and he got his wish. Then, when FIFA got a lot of deserved scrutiny, he threw the officials under the bus.
14) People bitch about the penalty kicks. If FIFA weren’t so uptight about a definite conclusion, we would have a real marathon. The golden goal-sudden death experiment was a failure. A practical proposal would result in: a) subsequent 30-minute silver-goal overtimes until someone outscored the other team and b) the number of substitutions being reset. The 30 minute OTs would be played without the teams changing sides until the next OT period. The substitutions would be three per three OT periods. After 180 minutes of play, the number of substitutions would reset and so on.

You can blame Bruce, just like you can blame Sven-Goran Erikshit for not dropping poorly performing big-names for brilliantly performing no-names (Becks for Lennon eh) or taking some player who were in form (Defoe, Bent, etc)
Bruce Arena was never cut out to coach on the world stage. 7/16/2006 2:13:00 PM |

You can also blame Bruce for trying to play DMB 60 yards away from his natural position. All during qualifying he was streaming down the left, cutting in and running at defenders. He does the same at PSV, and then when it comes time for the World Cup, Bruce panics about the world stage and abandons Clint Dempsey, who he constantly talked up, and plays DMB completely out of position and Convey too wide.
I'm madder about it now than I was then. 7/16/2006 3:10:52 PM |
