Still not worth it in my opinion. The screen is going to be crazy awesome. I can't stand how bad the iPad 1/2 screen looks.

Display, absolutely not. 1280x800 is all the pixel density my shitty eye sight can use.

Performance? It's got the same CPU as the iPad2, and the "multi-core GPU" is dubious at best in terms of a noticeable difference. Tablets aren't a primary gaming platform for me, so upselling me with "MOAR POLYGONS AND SHADERS" is a terrible strategy.

The only upsell for me in the iPad3 is true 4G. And since I am almost never more than 50ft away from a wifi hotspot, that's not really a big selling point either (though I absolutely realize it is for a LOT of people).

It's 1024 by 768. Unlike all the Android tablets (which are 1280 by 800) you aren't truly watching 720p HD.

It's just such low DPI for a 10" tablet.

First thing I see when I look at an iPad is pixels. Pixels everywhere. It's bad. Probably because I'm used to the DPI on the iPhone 4 but it just looks bad to me.

Going from 326 dpi on the iPhone 4 to 132 dpi on the iPad 1/2 is a very very noticeable difference in my experience. Moving to ~265 on the new iPad won't be as bad.

I don't see where he tried to influence anyone else's buying decision. He said it wasn't worth it to him, so he's not buying one. What does it matter to you what tablet someone else buys?

Just after reading some of the initial reviews I can't imagine anyone buying an older iPad now. I guess if you do just never look at an iPad 3 and you won't know what you're missing.

Quote :

Put the new iPad side-by-side with the iPad 2 and the differences are amazing. The iPad 2 suddenly looks so blurry. How have I never noticed that before? It's possible to see details on the new iPad that were just indistinct smears on the iPad 2. App icons are sharper and you can even read some of the tiny magazine covers on the Newsstand icon.

You don't have to pore over the little details to notice the difference, however. It is unmissable. Of all the changes Apple has made to the iPad since last year's release of the iPad 2, this is the one that will make you want to buy a new iPad immediately.

The Fedex guy just stopped by and gave me... my new Apple TV.

I guess Apple doesn't care too much about people getting those a day early.

^^ Im sure its very similar to the visual difference that I notice between my iPhone4 and my old 3rd Gen iPod Touch. You can "see" the pixels on the Touch compared to the retina display on the iPhone4.

My brother has an iPad2 and I noticed the same thing, even without having seen an iPad3 display.

I would say so. The screen is arguably the best part. I mean you're going from sub-HD 1024 by 768 to 2048-by-1536. I can barely look at an older iPhone now without seeing pixels everywhere.

I'm also thinking how awesome remote desktop apps will be. You'll log in with no down scaling or pan and scanning.

Grain of salt, and all that but this looks promising for a quickish jailbreak for the new iPad.

Thank you

For the same reason I don't bother buying 14-15" laptops with 1080p displays. I just end up raising the DPI scaling in Windows because I can't see the tiny shit anyway.

I'm sure it's a nice improvement, but hell no its not a 4-600 dollar one. Then again I'm a fucking cheapskate who pretty much only buys last-gen electronic gadgets because of the ridiculous price differential. I don't think I've paid much more than 1/2 the MSRP for any tablet I own.

1280x800 isn't a pixel density 0.o

The retina display is the most intriguing advancement for me.

And i don't know how bad your eyesight is with correction, but i would bet 90% of people would see a noticeable difference between the retina display and a non retina display.

I had several friends who got iPhone 4s who I promised would see a big difference between it and their old phones and other phones, but when they got the iphones they were like "wait, it looks the same??"

2 weeks later, I make them look at another phone and they were like "wow, those look like garbage." The OLED screen on my Bionic is almost painful to look at after I read my email/whatever on my iPod Touch (which isnt even an IPS panel like the iphones).

If you've owned a retina display product and still don't care, then fine. But its one of those things that a lot of people don't realize the difference until they've owned one for a bit.

^^Why does it have to be either? It's a product that's up for sale that can't be sold until a certain date. At midnight, it will be that date, so it goes on sale. They do that for movies, cds, and DVDs every single week.

It's bullshit in the fact that it's meaningless and made up, especially since the ipad display is great for a tablet but not spectacular for a phone.

The rezound has the highest pixel density out right now AFAIK, does that make it a "retina" display?

No, because "Retina Display" is a marketing term trademarked by Apple.

You're pointing out that it's a marketing term, and nobody is disagreeing with you. Nobody has ever thought otherwise. Why are you making such a big deal about this?

meaingless: no
made up: yes, but what term do you use to describe display scaling and PPI vs resolution for consumers???

Rezound has a higher res/PPI, but part of what makes a "retina display" on iOS devices a "retina display" is OS support through all levels. Android devices don't have this consistency.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAwf_53FsMg

Jump to 11 minutes for example. Notice that the Flash screen widgets don't draw proportionally, notice that the browser isn't scaling the browser display to the same scaling factor as the home screen elements.

So based on all the factors that Apple means when they say "retina display" you can't say the Rezound has a retina display. Does the rezound's screen most likely look as good or better than an iPhone 4? In some situations, yes. But resolution alone does not a retina display make.

I anticipate Android to catch up, most likely this year, but they aren't technically quite there yet.

^^ Just to reinforce that this isn't my opinion, this are technical, objective properties of iOS platform vs. Android...

It looks like Google fleshed out the scaling APIs more in Android 3.2:
http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design.html

for reference, 3.2+ devices represent 3% of Android devices:
http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html

As of ~1yr ago, 40% of iOS hardware were "retina display":
http://www.quora.com/Apple-Inc-2/What-is-the-breakdown-of-iPhone-users-by-hardware-iteration

98% of iOS users were on 4.0 or higher (first iOS to support retina devices IIRC) ~6 mo ago:
http://www.cocoanetics.com/2011/08/ios-versions-in-the-wild/

^ yep
The IGZO-based panel means it'll be brighter and theoretically better color saturation than current generation LCD panels:

http://www.displayblog.com/2011/07/28/sharp-mobile-displays-with-igzo-uv2a/

1280x800 in a 10" screen is a specific pixel density. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I've owned laptops over the years that had ultra high pixel densities (the old Dell Precision laptops had insanely high PPI).

I have 20/30 corrected vision, but it just doesn't make that big a difference to me *shrug*.

Like I said, I'm just speaking for myself. I know lots of people really do see and enjoy the improved density.
