^^ idk, this episode presented/set up some pretty awesome stuff.

Last week's episode was better in some ways for sure. They could have flipped them I guess and moved some stuff from this episode to the premier of next season. but I liked this episode quite a bit.

so I thought Stannis was captured... did I miss where he escaped back to Dragonstone?

V nice had to rewatch the last episode, you're right it is his own men.

^nah, he only got cut on his face. It wasn't really a severe wound. But he did get screwed in other ways.

I don't really get how Stannis escaped. It was his own men that pulled him back, but Tywin's army was between the wall and the ships at that point.

Nope, that's not how it went down in the books, so I don't really know what happened. I'm guessing his men just sold him to Ramsay Snow for their freedom or something.

I just took it as them abandoning him. They never really respected him. And there weren't many of them, so I don't think they really stood much of a chance. They were also never meant to be there.

A pretty rushed and anti-climactic finale all in all.
-The Winterfell ending was all messed up.
-The Arya ending was weird.
-The Jon Snow ending was confusing if you didn't read the book and happened too fast.
-The Dany ending was surprisingly the best of the bunch, although they didn't really explain the house of the undying very well. I guess that is okay since it was a deviation anyway. I was glad to see them work Drogo back in even if it were just for a few seconds.
-Something didn't sit right about the whole court scene with Sansa and Joffrey.
-What was the deal with the Samwell ending? Is he dead now? WTF...

Decent episode. I was a little disappointed considering I was very excited for all the things that were supposed to happen. Most of them happened, but it felt really rushed.

Last year's season finale was perfect. They did a great job setting up Season 2 after the climax in episode 9. This year's still set some stuff up but just didn't do a great job of it.

Of course I'm still pumped for Season 3.

^^^^ I haven't read the books and i don't agree with any of that.

Well, I'll agree that the Dany part wsa pretty awesome. And I'll agree that it was all a little rushed. There were a lot of plot-lines to wrap up. But it all seemed fairly straightforward to me, minus the things that weren't meant to be straightforward. Leaving some things unknown in a finale is OK, it's actually pretty the case 100% of the time. Adding some new questions is also OK/Good... it adds more interest for next season.

THIS. I rewound it and watched again just to make sure what I thought was happening actually was happening.

Dany's story finally got interesting after being so excited for it this season.

Who burnt down Winterfell. Seemed the Greyjoy's were going to use Theon as bait to get out with their lives, so why would the 500 northmen burn down their keep? Makes no sense.

I wonder if Jon Snow's uncle, the Nightwatch guy who went north of the wall in season 1 and wasn't found is the King of the North...that would be pretty cool

Yeah, they didn't do a good job of explaining why. The dude said a vague comment (in the previous episode) and then just started fighting Jon.

the Jon/Three-Finger stuff was pretty obvious

I too wonder what happened with the burning of Winterfell. You wouldn't think the forgiveness that Robb offered would hold if they burned the entirety of the town and murdered all the people first

^I thought it was quite clear. The guy said something along the lines of "one brother inside their army is worth more than a thousand outside." When Jon said that they'd never trust him, he said, "they might... if you do what needs to be done." Then right after that he pushes him and starts cursing him and whatnot." His plan was pretty obvious from the start, make Jon out to be a traitor, sacrifice himself to solidify that view, and hope that some good will come of it.

Makes sense, since he knew he'd never get out of the Wildlings' captivity alive.

^This. And I think Halfhand mentioned something to him about how he knew he wouldn't be able to kill Ygritte, implying that Jon could win some respect from her (ultimately knowing they would probably all be captured/killed by Wildlings).

On the topic of what happened at Winterfell, remember that Robb told his advisor (Roose Bolton) to have his bastard march on Winterfell to win it back and offer amnesty to any of the Ironborn except for Theon. Bolton said something along the lines of "A deal like that will probably make his own men turn on him instantly" which is exactly what happened. As far as who burned Winterfell and why... that is something you'll have to wait until next season to find out unless you want to hear some major spoilers.

^the book does a much better job of explaining this. I agree with the TV watchers, if you didn't have previous knowledge, the whole thing felt rushed and ill explained.

right. although I dont think it is too much to say that one must remember the general theme of the story. EVERYONE is out to better themselves, usually at whatever cost necessary.

I thought the night watch guy's comments and actions made it pretty clear on what would happen. I was just waiting for Jon to realize what he wanted him to do. I was more thrown by them untying him right away. Just because he killed a guy on his side who attacked him first, that doesn't man he's not a threat.

On a semi-related note, I was watching Alien 3 this past weekend in preparation for Prometheus and was very surprised to find a young Tywin Lannister playing one of the main characters.

The wizard went down like a chump, man. The only spell he seemed to fire off was the "extremely flammable clothen robe" charm.

well to be fair, the Warlocks had spent most of their time drinking Shade of the Evening, getting fucked up, and pretending they were blue-lipped spell casters when in reality they were frauds.

Their magic didn't actually start to work until the Dragons were born. So Pyatt Pree didn't have much experience, I guess.

i didn't quite understand why the Warlock dude in the House of the Undying just stood there and took the fire from the dragons. i was expecting him to know some magic that would have warded off the flames and then have him start laughing maniacally like "nice try bitch." but i guess ^ makes sense in the explanation.

Yeah I still don't get how the warlock guy just went up in flames. Freaking guy can conjure up all that shit and the trick tower but can't put out some flames? I don't buy that at all.

Overall I thought it was a great episode though.

just realized something: in Qarth there is no ruling body now right? the black guy had the other members of the council killed and then proclaimed himself king. but now he is locked away in his vault to die... so doesn't that open up Qarth to be completely ruled by the Khaleesi? (or by anyone really, but perfect opportunity for her)

GenghisJohn's description of the Pyat Pree thing is probably the most accurate educated guess you could make at this point in terms of the character as presented on the TV show.

Remember, it is believed by the characters that most of the magic in the world has slowly been returning since the dragons hatched (melisandre, pyat pree, etc.). The magic wasn't very strong until recently. He and his warlock group were basically viewed as charlatans before the dragons. Even now his "powers" are more magician than warlock.

Sure it's more extreme than a magician in our world but it's smoke and mirrors all the same. Set criss angel on fire when he's not expecting it and see if he doesn't burn to death.

Uhh... considering magic doesn't exist in our world AT ALL, "more extreme" is a gross understatement.

^^ That's why I said magician (ie: "one who performs tricks of illusion and sleight of hand") and said "it's smoke and mirrors all the same." I think you just misinterpreted my post.

I was simply trying to say that I believe most of his powers (at least until very recently) were like a magician of our world - or in other words were nothing other than smoke and mirrors / slight of hand and not real "magic" in a fantasy sense. Sure, his illusions may have been more extreme and more fantastical because of the type of story it is, but they were illusions all the same and thus it doesn't surprise me that dragon fire would kill him.
