so im gonna put my ps3 in my room with a 19in lcd hdtv...put it on my desk so i can play ut3 with keyboard and mouse...

then gonna run headphone out (stereo) to my logitech computer speakers...

i guess i could use hdmi just for the sake of having 1 cable to my tv...but does the audio on the component cables send the same audio feed?

Wait. Someone said the ps3 gives you several hundred dollars worth of free electronics in the box. What??? I paid $400 for the ps3 I wasn't aware it was free. All that came in the box was ps3. + 1 controller +1 movie. And power cables. Which was free?

I'd also like to add that for sony the cost of including an HDMI cable is measured in cents not dollars. but at least the component cables r only $20

Whats the best animated blu ray disc to get? I was thinking of picking one up today I haven't seen Ratatoille? (sp???) is that any good?

Honestly Golovko, who would want to use the PS3 for anything HD anyway?

It's not like they've included a movie in the box specifically tailored to be played on high definition sets or anything.

Nice troll attempt though.

If you have to buy one Blu-ray, definitely get Ratatouille. Besides the fact that animated movies are about the best looking thing you'll see in HD, it's a pretty good movie to boot.

sweet...i'll get that today then. May as well get something I haven't seen.

I bought Lord of War yesterday along with the PS3 and only watched about 20 minutes of it before passing out after being out all night. I must say I was definitly impressed. I didn't get a chance to play around with many settings (audio) so all I did was plug and play. So that can only mean it will get better once I've tweaked it.

I did notice however when I put it on bitstream it said some audio tracks will be ommited or something along those lines. I thought bitstream was uncompressed?

Try the cell processor and all the other random shit they included in there to extend the functionality of it. I know you dropped $400 on it, my only point is that they also contributed a few hundred bucks towards the total cost of the system, for you, so don't worry that they skimped on a $10 cable. Which is obvious and discussed 100 times too many times, so why do you make me explain it?

Because he had to buy a cable that should have been included to actually take advantage of it? You can't really take advantage of any of the functionality without it.

Don't bother trying to defend it; it's completely idiotic that there's not an HDMI cable (or at least component cables) in the box.

^^^There isn't much to tweak. You can try the RGB Full Range setting, but I've found all it does is crush blacks on my TV. I didn't notice much of a difference with Super White on or off.

Bitstream means it sends the audio signal to your receiver without decoding it first. So lets say you have a DTS track. If you set it to bitsream, the DTS indicator on your receiver will light up and it will handle the decoding of the track itself. If you set the PS3 to PCM, it'll decode the DTS track on board and sends it out as multi-channel PCM. The reason it said is if your receiver can't handle a certain type of audio encode (like the HD formats for example), the audio track won't work if you try to bitstream it to your receiver.

^There is no defending it, but singling out Sony for it is just silly. It's no dumber than printers that don't come with USB cables.

^I singled out microsoft on the Xbox360 core because that only came with SD cables and no hdd. But it did cost a lot less and didn't come with a free HD DVD

so if I have a pretty high end receiver I'm better off running bitstream since it supports all the formats (well most)?

^^Yep, you can do that. Also, you can switch between PCM and Bitsream while a movie is playing, so you can decide which you think sounds better pretty easily.

Sorry I haven't had a chance (i.e. you must suffer for my laziness) to read all 51 pages of this thread, but I haven't had my PS3 for long and so help me out if this has been covered already:

1) Somebody mentioned the Sony card... there are much better cards out there (I'm a BP card holder myself), but yeah it's nice 'cause it extends your Sony warranties and keeps your SonyRewards points from ever expiring (on top of that $100 back deal). Reverse Auctions sometimes land decent deals.

2) I've never owned a PS2 but am interested in importing some PS2 games (Naruto Accel 2 comes to mind since the PS3 one is a much longer wait). Anybody installed the switch to override their slot-load disc drive motor control? I'm thinking about it but since I don't solder much and would be voiding the warranty on this $500 investment...

3) Anybody added store accounts besides US and Japan? I love the demos in the Japanese store and was wondering if there are many demos unique to other countries.

4) Anybody else had their "boot-game-os" function stop working on YDL? I just fixed mine and can share some useful links if anybody needs 'em.

1. ok....
2. why? (most, depending on model) ps2 games work fine.
3. no. but any other location exclusives (EU is the only other area) will be known in advance.
4. eh? no.

^ *old* seen something like that awhile ago, seems to be cheaper now and has more than one company doing it, go figure

^^^^ well if you haven't had a ps3 for long, you probably have one of the newer ones that don't play ps2 games at all, let alone trying to get imports to work.

^ Well, I have the 60GB so it plays PS2 games fine. Only problem is... if you notice, USA and Japan are in the same Blu-ray region, but not the same DVD region... so (if and when a publisher chooses to region-restrict a PS3 title) we can import Jap PS3 games with no problems, but not Jap PS2 games. While it's nice to play PS2 games from our region, several titles are released MUCH later here or never at all! So for example, Narutimate Hero Accel 2 comes out this month in Japan but probably can't be authorized for release here until 2009 (the characters won't have been revealed on tv here until then), by which time nobody will care about PS2 titles anymore. The way to beat the region protection is to have a US region PS2 game in to get past the region security check, then swap it out without the PS3 knowing, which requires some tinkering.

I'm trying to connect my iPhone and an external HDD for music/videos. For some reason neither one of them shows up in the main menu as the PS3 instruction manual says...I'd rather not partition my iMac and install windows just so I can stream music...so i'd rather dump it all on a external USB HDD and use it that way.

What HDD formats are supported? This ones formated in FAT. Does it have to be NTFS?

If the 360 doesn't even use NTFS for external USB devices, I'd have a hard time believing that the PS3 would.

hmm...well the manual says nothing about formats. It does mention what file extensions are supported though.

This sucks

oh and I thought this was a console...whats up with 'installing demos'? Do i have to 'install' games too? Or just demos because they're compressed for smaller download files?

not to sound like i'm trolling or anything but it is a multiplayer PS3 game. So i doubt it has rank or anything like that. Let sony get their act together with the online stuff first.

I think your talking about something different.

I meant inside of the game. RB6 has persistent elite creation and you get XP on COD4 for each kill you get.

It allows you to be promoted and be paired up with games around your skill level.

Shit christ, Famitsu rated GT5: Prologue a point higher than SMG (39/40 vs. 38/40). It's only a "demo" though, lol.

Demo or not, I'm seriously considering importing this, and I don't even like racing games

Review for UT3 up:

http://ps3.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r26384.htm

Quote :
"GZ Rating 8.8

Gameplay: 8.5
While it has continually been improved, the gameplay hasn’t remarkably changed over the years. Long-time fans are essentially playing the same game rebuilt with a new graphics engine. But, do not fret – the gameplay is still whole-heartedly entertaining. For PS3 fans, the large-scale combat is particularly the most intriguing part to experience online.

Graphics: 9.6
Beautiful in both motion and at a standstill, the Unreal Engine 3 provides eye-popping graphics for Unreal Tournament 3. Not having played Uncharted yet, I’d have to say this is the best game, in terms of graphics, to be released on the PS3.

Sound: 9.1
The announcer that Epic Games has provided is great to add to the intensity of the battles.

Difficulty: Medium
While the default settings are easy for the single-player campaign, the higher settings tend to be insanely hard.

Concept: 8.7
The combat is insane, but it’s basically the same game that has continuously been improved since 1998. Though, I will give props where props are due and the style is among the most unique to be released this year.

Multiplayer: 9.7
This is hands-down the best multiplayer game on the PS3 due to the ability create maps, skins and mods for the PS3 version.

Overall: 8.8
With all that said, the main reason I am captivated by UT3 is because how much it differs from shooters currently on the next-generation consoles. Too many shooters are still stuck in World War II or trying to “advance” to modern combat, while not enough are cranking up the speed and providing thrilling action to boot. If you have enjoyed the previous installments, then I have no doubt that Unreal Tournament 3 will be a fine purchase this holiday season"

Hard to imagiane there are gamers out there that don't give a shit about achievements, huh?

All along I thought the point of playing a game was to play the game, not tick off some checklist to make my e-penis look bigger.

Many screenshots are retouched. It's BS but it happens.

I mean, there was just a big news yesterday in fact concerning Killzone 2 screenies where the developer was caught in the act and admitted they doctored them.

I'm sure you'll see the same filter pass and retouch on those GT5 screens- HOWEVER that doesnt mean that the game won't look good. I've seen it in person and it does look quite nice, although it's a shame it's just a racing game. Racing games aren't my thing but I know they are to others, and GT5 looks like a winner. Too bad we have to wait a year for it.

UT3 will be interesting to me, as the PC version sales have been pretty low. People's reaction are kinda mum - not bad, fun, but basically the UT you've been playing the past couple of iterations. I thought about getting it on the PC but hesitated.....I know mine will run it but not sure if I could devote the time to it. I do look forward to some of your reactions to it on here? Anyone getting it?

Goalie that's a really dumb way of putting it. Just like any SCORE, you don't really care about it, but it's fun. Like any ranking system, like any scoreboard, like any in-game medals in games like BF2, warhawk, COD4, or even 'leveling up' in an RPG. You don't obssess, but it's neat to chart progress in anything you do. Doesn't that make sense?

I understand your commentary but it's more about the kids that go and rent every game out there and nab the easy points and obsess over it all. But for those that don't and enjoy the casual scoring, don't knock it. It's fun.

I'm just saying that I lose absolutely nothing from playing the game without achievements or any of the other crap Live throws on there.

I bought CoD4 for the PC *gasp* and have done most of the things I see as achievements in the threads...do I feel cheated for not getting a "ding" whenever I do it...hell no, because I'm playing the game for the game.

I have NCAA 08 on the PS3...was I pissed when I took a one-star and won the national championship and didn't get another "ding" - nope.

And in neither of those situations did I ever have a problem hooking up with buddies and playing the game online.

I'm not saying Live and all the frilly shit it comes with isn't a good idea. I'm just saying I don't give a flying fuck about achievements, gamer scores, etc. Same thing goes for Home - it's going to be nifty, but it's just an afterthought for me.

But then again, I'm a PC gamer first and a console gamer second. When I want to play CoD4 with friends, I hop on Teamspeak, one of us finds a server, then everyone else opens their console and connects to the IP. When I want to play a buddy in football on the PS3, I shoot him a text and let him know I'm setting up the game. And I accomplish that all for free and without having to deal with some 12 year old running his fucking mouth in a lobby.

If you really want someone to stroke you off over the whole Live thing, you have a thread for that.

sounds like an awful amount of trouble when there are far simpler ways. Sometimes my friends aren't on when I am. And sometimes I don't know which friends are online that would want to play. Hence why LIVE is brilliant.
